Why Netflix's Isn't So "Bright" When It Comes To Making Original Films

Bright was released on Netflix this week, and yet the film is already getting heavy criticism from critics.

In fact, Bright has a horrendous 30% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics are calling the film the "worst movie of 2017".

So what is it that makes Bright, and similar Netflix original films so terrible?

Bright's storyline is conceptually pretty cool; in a world where humans and mythical creatures live side by side, an Orc and human police officer team up to protect the fate of the world.

This parallel reality puts us in Los Angeles, and orcs live harmoniously with humans. Overall the film has a Marvel type feel to it, but isn't quite all there. We've got two police officers, Daryl Ward played by Will Smith, and Nick Jakoby (the Orc), played by Joel Edgerton. Smith's character has a new partner, and he's the first Orc allowed to be a police officer.

So it's not that Bright is a particularly horrible film, but it just fails miserably in a few crucial areas. The big one here is the topic of discrimination and prejudice within the film.

Funny how everyone I know said it was really good.

They are entitled to there opinion I guess.........

Ikr, from what I seen on twitter and yahoo. People actually liked it or say it wasn't bad but ok. So all I know is who cares what critics says. It's there opinion and they always go after flaws then to just enjoy the film. At the end of the day it was watched 11 million times and a few days.

It’s no better or worse than the usual Hollywood blockbuster—that’s why critics and studio-heads are panicking. I’m a sucker for fantasy films, so I enjoyed it.

Also, “Netflix’s”? I mean, you’re making an article about something not being so ‘bright’, and then you (whoever wrote this) can’t even grammar check the title?

It had terrible writing, some good effects but it was just bad. Stopped after hearing the cringiest like of 2017 "If you act like someone I hate then I am going to hate you"....wut *facepalm*

Movie was fine. Your opinion is invalid!

woodtock2323d ago

The writing could use some improvement for the sequel.

Eidolon2324d ago

These critics look way to much into films.

Netflix doesn’t make movies for critics, critical acclaim doesn’t really mean a thing anyway.

Kallisti2323d ago

The film was an enjoyable watch for me and despite jaded film critics saying it was bad, they've already confirmed it will be getting a sequel. Looking forward to it myself.
