Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’s ‘Sexist Backlash’ Is Not Newsworthy

SR

This week brought plenty of excitement for Star Wars fans as the first teaser trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story landed, bringing with it the first look at protagonist Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) and her comrades in action. Directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla), Rogue One is a prequel to A New Hope that follows a group of Rebels as they go on a mission to steal the plans for the original Death Star. Inevitably, there were a handful of overly sensitive individuals on the Internet who were offended by the fact that Rogue One has a female lead, and it was perhaps with equal inevitability that the views of this handful of individuals have already been turned into headline news by several outlets.

It's not a big deal although after how much they focused on Reye in Force Awakens I can see why people would complain.

Nevermind that Rey was the protagonist in The Force Awakens or anything.

I think the problem people had was she could do everything.

While Finn was just...well he was just there. He really wasn't needed when they had Poe.

She filled Han Solos role from the original with how tecnical she was and how she could drive the Falcon and she was also a badass Jedi.

I mean two roles in one. Overkill in my opinion

@Fox

Oh that she was a Mary Sue, you mean? Yeah, I agree with that complaint. That's a different criticism altogether than what I thought you were talking about in first statement.

Lol, that's like complaining about The Martian focusing on Matt Damon.

I can kind of see why as well. I'll be there day one tho too watch.

It irks me a bit, but that's just because it's Disney and they always put in progressive characters just because. My biggest fear is that she will come off as Mary Sue-ish, hopefully they avoid that.

Other than that, Star Wars has always had a strong and diverse cast and they really didn't do much with Leia in the Force Awakens, which was a bit of a disappointment because she was an already-existing well-written, strong female character.
