The Masked Saint (2016) Review | FilmGamesEtc

FGE - The film draws many parallels between wrestling and organized religion. It was difficult to watch the film and not think of Alex Gibney’s Going Clear. After seeing that bombshell it’s hard to walk into a movie with even trace amounts of religious content without questioning doctrine, principle and intent. Masked Saint places heavy emphasis on the true nature of wrestling. The fans laugh and cheer even though they know that it is all fake. That these people are just actors on a stage. A fantastic stage. The cinematic aspects of wrestling are brought to the forefront of the viewer’s mind as we are forced to question the faith of this religious leader. Does he truly believe in what he preaches or is he just an actor playing to the whims of his audience?
