George Lucas Delivered His Verdict on The Force Awakens

Vulture

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy recently said that George Lucas, godfather of the Star Wars franchise, saw The Force Awakens and “liked it.” Reluctant to take the word of such a seemingly unreliable source at face value, we sought confirmation from the man himself — and, Sunday night, we got it. Sort of.

I love George for bringing us the first Star Wars movie and for helping write the rest of the original trilogy, he collaborated with so many people to make it happen, he was a truly inspirational man.

“I think the fans are going to love it,” he said. “It’s very much the kind of movie they’ve been looking for.”

It's too bad you didn't think that way when making the prequels and when you messed with the original trilogy time and time again with each new release.

If you knew what we wanted why were the prequels so poorly received by the fans?

The prequels were not the Star Wars that we remembered growing up. They were relying to much on CG and gone were the real sets, props and gritty tone that made the original trilogy so good.

George started to mess with the original trilogy, changing so many things that upset fans worldwide. Young force ghost Anakin, Han shooting second and other badly done visual effects that are easy to spot including fake CG sets that look like plastic and actually warp because of bad motion tracking!

Why should we even care about George's approval after everything that he's done to ruin the magic?

J.J. Abrams being a true fan brought the magic back it seems.. real sets and props and CG used to merely compliment the visuals and not replace them entirely.

Why do we hate CG, because we only hate the bad kind, the kind that's easily noticeable, good CG goes unnoticed.
Star Wars is back looking gritty and beautiful, I can't wait till December 16th when I go to the midnight screening of The Force Awakens.. I wonder if the classic scrolling titles will be present still?

I am simply thrilled that JJ has gone back to actually building sets, puppeteers and stunning props. I've been saying forever that the visual effects artistry of traditional makeup and practical non CG effects was dying a sad death. I hope this sparks a resurgence in that field.

Disagree

The original Star Wars gained popularity because of the special effects. Now special effects aren't the reason people became hardcore fans but the original draw was the special effects. George just fell pray to trying to recreate that success. He couldn't properly identify what created the hardcore Star Wars fan. He obviously banked on FX with the prequels.

To be fair though puppets and gritty set pieces weren't what brought in the original Star Wars audiences.

I don't think that's true. The reason Episode V is generally considered the pinnacle of the series (which I definitely agree with) is because the special effects never overshadowed the characters and the "saga" of it all. It just stood to give it all a sci-fi context.

No cg scenes, can't wait to see this film

Honestly my expectations are pretty low for this film. I do expect to be more entertaining than epi 1,2 and 3 but I've pretty much straight up hated everything JJ Abrams has done in the past.
