The LRA Show Ep. 11 - Super 8

LRA writes: Reduced back down to a two man show, this week Brian and myself open up by showering heaping amounts of praise on the new HBO show Game of Thrones and I give some quick recaps on my feelings for "True Grit" and "Battle: Los Angeles" after re-watching them again on Blu-ray. Then it is time to put on your nostalgia caps and prepare for some unwavering amounts of film geekery as we discuss the new J.J. Abrams film "Super 8". Warning! Two people filled with nothing but love for those 70's/80's Spielberg movies of their youth and modern day movie contemptment lie ahead as we give a loving embrace to a summer film experience that has not been seen for over three decades now. Due to the official soundtrack not being available yet the featured music this week is "Don't Bring Me Down" by the Electric Light Orchestra and the James Horner score from the 1985 film "Cocoon" which was used for the Super 8 trailer.

Entertainment Focus - Review: True Grit

14 year-old Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld – Back To You) is looking to track down the man responsible for murdering her father. Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin - Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps) is a wanted man and has evaded capture so Mattie takes it upon herself to do what the authorities can’t seem to do – bring Chaney to justice. Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges – TRON: Legacy) is a US Marshall who many say has true grit, a person who will stop at nothing to get his man. So Mattie hires Cogburn and along with a Texas Ranger named LaBoeuf (Matt Damon – The Bourne Identity), form a trio to track down and kill Chaney once and for all.

This is one of the best movies I've seen that was a reboot of an old western. I never really liked the original with John Wayne in it but I loved this one. I don't know if it was the characters and how they were protrayed by the actors or how the script was done more true to the book or if it was just directed better....I don't know. I just know that this movie impressed me a lot.

LRA: True Grit - Blu-ray Review

LRA writes: Watching this film again at home has only solidified it as one of the best films to come out in the last few years, the fact that it is a western only makes it that much more special. It is also notable for giving us what I believe to be one of the best debut performances by an actor ever with the discovery of Hailee Steinfeld. I still hold true that she gave the best performance of last year no matter what anyone says. I have also found a new appreciation for the ending of the film which I was initially lukewarm on but after understanding the novel a little more I have come to like it. This is an amazing movie filled with amazing performances across the board that will please just about anyone who gives it a chance.

I caught True Grit in theaters with my brother and I thought it was great. Definitely check it out on bluray if you're into westerns/ haven't seen it yet.

Hailee Steinfeld is the standout here.

It was wonderful and I've seen it again since. She was great and I'm sure she'll have a long career too. Something about the cast just clicked. I bought it as soon as it came out.
