AVClub: In the middling period crime drama Legend, Tom Hardy gives another of his indelible supporting performances, playing Ronnie Kray, the real-life British gangster whose eccentricities and savage streak made him a well-known and frequently feared character in 1960s London. Hardy plays Ronnie as a literal monster, stiff and hulking, with his face frozen into a permanent sneer. It’s the kind of role the actor’s known for: the odd brute, adding color and excitement around the edges of any shot he’s in. The difference is that in Legend, Hardy’s also the guy at the center of the frame, Ronnie’s twin brother Reggie—a handsome rogue with a keen business sense and a romantic streak. There’s never any question who’s who when both Krays are on the screen. Even if Ronnie didn’t wear thick glasses and have a resting expression that exposes his teeth and gums, the performances would be distinct, because Hardy carries himself differently when he’s the leading man than when he’s the scene-stealer.
