People always talk talk of actors “dominating” a film; they deliver a performance so awe-inspiring that all other elements of the movie-making process take a backseat. Heck, that was my concluding sentiment on Tom Hardy in Legend. But Dane DeHaan can go one better. As James Dean in Life he defines the film.

A sci-fi thriller in the vein of Ridley Scott's Alien, Life doesn't aspire to shattering cinematic molds or upheaving genre conventions. On the contrary, everyone involved in this project appears to be content just paying homage to the movie's forebearers, which is to say that this unabashedly entertaining creature feature wears its inspirations plainly on its bloodstained sleeve.
Against all, early indicators, Life turned out to be a hellava well-written movie, with some incredible directing.
