2ND UPDATE, Saturday 1AM: If box office seems off tonight, it’s not because of the aftermath from the Grand Theatre tragedy. Heading into this weekend, the current hodge podge of varying demo offerings weren’t projected to rewrite the box office record books. In fact the top 10 films, currently totaling $140.2M, are expected to be +6% vs. the same period a year ago. A recent AP article straw-polling moviegoers today around the nation found that they remained unfazed by the shooting in Lafayette, Louisiana which left two dead and nine wounded. Moviegoers continue to flock to the multiplex today, realizing that the Lafayette tragedy was random and isolated. Earlier today, a rep from Custom Protective Services, a private security firm that is routinely hired by exhibitors every weekend, told Deadline that they haven’t received any requests requiring them to increase their men at the multiplex in the wake of Lafayette. The firm also isn’t expecting any copycat incidents.
