From Blumhouse Productions -- the micro-budget movie company that brought you Paranormal Activity, Insidious and The Purge -- comes The Gallows, a found-footage horror flick written and directed by Travis Cluff and Chris Lofing, and starring newcomers Reese Mishler, Pfeifer Brown, Ryan Shoos and Cassidy Gifford (all of whom go by their own first names in the movie). Opening in 1993, the film kicks off with a video recording of a high school play, "The Gallows," which ends in tragedy when the male lead Charlie Grimille (Jesse Cross) is accidentally hung onstage in front of a packed house. 20 years later, the school decides to revive the failed production in a misguided attempt to honor Charlie.
"As a horror film it does have some great jump scares. It had much better jump scares when compared to the recently released Poltergeist film, which seemed to be lacking when it came down to that department. Characters may not have been great, but the scares were there and that may be all that people are looking for out of The Gallows." -Bryan Weatherall (Resident Entertainment)
Jeremy of The Daily Rotation wrote, "The Gallows is a very by-the-books found-footage horror film, but it works within its own established boundaries quite well, delivering enough scares to keep audiences on the edge of their seat, despite the film following almost every genre cliche known."
