'Terminator Genisys' Review | The Reel Roundup

TRR: In James Cameron's tech-noir original, future leader of the human resistance John Connor sent his top soldier, Kyle Reese, back in time to 1984 to defend his mother, Sarah, from the unrelenting attacks of a T-800 Terminator sent by the evil A.I. Skynet. But Terminator Genisys, the franchise's fifth installment, effectively rewrites the story. Instead of a helpless waitress, Kyle (Jai Courtney) finds an accomplished badass (Emilia Clarke), a Guardian T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger), and a new mission: to time travel to 2017 and stop Skynet (now a "killer app" called "Genisys") from ever coming online. The result is a time-twisting, paradox-surfing thrill-ride that serves up tons of homages to the first two Terminator films, while providing Schwarzenegger with ample opportunity to poke a little fun at his own aging action hero persona. Yet, it flips the series' mythology so completely on its side that die-hard fans may question how much it really deserves the Terminator moniker. Either way, Terminator Genisys is a definite rebirth for the iconic franchise. But if you don't like the direction things are headed in, rest assured. Odds are that you'll only need to wait a few years for it to be rebooted again anyway.
