Spider-Man Won’t be White in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Spider-Man is being born again… again. After successful negotiations between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, the web-slinger is getting ready to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe – probably making his first appearance in Captain America: Civil War – and will star in his own MCU standalone movie in 2017.

Would be highly disappointing if this guy is right.

Here's the direct link to the location of the video where they discuss this.

:| Well, f**k. Black or Latino huh... as a Latino I'm pretty damn disapointed. As much as I'd like to see Miguel O'Hara one day I think Peter is the Spider-man The Avengers should have!

Why cant it ever be perfect! There's always some bs "creative" catch from these directors!! Everytime, I really hope this isn't true, I'm Latino and Im hoping spiderman remains a white Peter Parker

Soldierone1515d ago

The way this makes it sound is that he is doing it simply due to race, and for that reason if this is true I won't watch it. DC has movies coming out so I won't care honestly.

Like I've said do what you want to Peter, but make Peter Spider-Man.

Anthotis1515d ago (Edited 1515d ago )

At least he's an original character. So it's not another blatant and malicious anti-white race swap.

It won't be Mile Morales

"In the official press release announcing the Sony/Marvel partnership, Sony Pictures president Doug Belgrad explicitly named PETER PARKER as the character who would be joining the MCU. "

-Foxtrot1515d ago

That would be such a p*** take

Deadshot all over again

They have a black character they can use but they decide to change the race

Marvel have Miles Morales and DC had Bronze Tiger

annoyedgamer1514d ago

Nope its Peter. Just like Thorita the female Thor.

Defectiv3_Detectiv31515d ago

I don't see the problem here - why should other ethnicities get stuck with all the second tier characters? It's almost embarrassing how Marvel has slighted these characters, from Blade to War Machine to Falcon.

SilentNegotiator1514d ago

Why should the character's original ethnicity get bumped from first tier characters?

Defectiv3_Detectiv31514d ago

...because the South lost the war. There is absolutely nothing significant as to what race Parker is underneath the hood, that's part of what makes superheroes unique - they are everyday people after they take off their mask. Peter Parker may as well be black, or Latino or Inuit. The fact that so many people are outraged by such an innocuous change makes me embarrassed as a white person.

Baka-akaB1514d ago (Edited 1514d ago )

Except that as a black person i felt a bit slighted and insulted to be given scraps , especially by PC do gooders on my behalf ... when there are plenty black heroes already there to feature ... it's even worse here when there is actually a black latino Spiderman they could use instead .

SilentNegotiator1514d ago (Edited 1514d ago )

See, that's exactly the problem. You ran straight to racism. "The south lost the war"? Seriously? That response is childish. I asked "why?" and all you have is "why not? Racism!".

People want to see their favorite characters portrayed the way that they are in the comic books. It's that simple, really. And if they change the race of the main character, you know that they'll slap a hackneyed "Did you know that racism is bad?" side message in or a stereotype racist white person...this is 21st century Hollywood we're talking about.

It embarrasses me as an intellectual that you are embarrassed for as entire "race" as diverse as "white" over something that you yourself describe as "innocuous". It's quite ironic.

frelyler1514d ago

Blade was well done and does not belong on your list, he had three stand alone movies and the first one still beats a lot of other movies today (hokey CGI aside). I agree with your other character choices though.

Defectiv3_Detectiv31514d ago

Are we forgetting Blade 3? They totally pushed him to the side.

"I don't see the problem here"

While I can't speak for everyone, my issue with it isn't just that it isn't true to the source material, but that it serves no real purpose. As you said, it makes no difference what race he is, so there is ultimately no point in changing such a fundamental element of the character.

The other issue I have is how this works in terms of diversity. Changing Peter's race for the sake of changing it feels like a step backwards instead of forward. It's like saying we hit the quota for white characters, don't want to make a new character, so instead a character is changed to suit their needs. This isn't progress, it's basically just doing something for the sake of doing something and expecting praise for being more diverse.

Crazay1514d ago

Much like changing Johnny Storm's ethnicity...not only do they make that big change but they fundamentally change the dynamic and history of the character.
