Has this been the longest Oscar season ever? It certainly feels like it. Obviously that September-February period where campaigning is in full effect seems to take up more and more mental and physical real estate every year, but 2014 was particularly stretched out: two major contenders premiered last January at Sundance, literally twelve full months before another Best Picture nominee, “American Sniper,” opened wide in theaters to record-breaking box office. Along the way, we’ve also had the earliest-opening Best Picture nominee in a decade in the shape of “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” and a movie that only opened on Christmas Day in “Selma.” Somehow, the Oscar year now lasts for fourteen months.
