Flickering Myth
I’m going somewhere with this. Stay with me. If you spent any time online today, you might be led to believe that by large swaths of individuals who believe the most prestigious awards show of the year is a misogynistic and racist institution that takes great pleasure in maintaining an elitist status quo. It’s all bullshit, of course. The real problems with diversity in film can be attributed to an industry that is slow to embrace more female voices behind the camera. Things are improving, albeit slowly. Rome wasn’t built in a day, nor was the city planner ever gilded with a shiny trophy for his efforts. Moving on.

I think people need to shut up about racism just because Selma didn't get nominated in as many categories as it wanted. There were so many good movies this year. Who exactly would the critics like to replace on the grounds of there being too many white nominees? What if Selma got nominated in everything: what would those who missed out be able to complain about? It's ironic because the entire point of equality is everyone has a fair shot, which sometimes means an actor might not get nominated, no matter the color of their skin. Jennifer Aniston didn't get nominated either and last time I checked, she's white.
