Sam Love writes- Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past ten years, you will have seen the power of social media growing. Ever since Facebook was founded in 2004, approximately 1.2 billion people have signed up to the service. I’m sure the majority of you dear readers have a profile. Maybe you’re on Twitter, too. So it’s unusual that it’s taken Hollywood this long to make a mainstream horror based around the social media world.
TRR: Every year, it seems like another found-footage horror flick manages to find its way to the multiplexes. And thanks to director Leo Gabriadze's Unfriended, 2015 was no different. Unfolding in real-time and entirely on one character's computer desktop, the film tells the story of a group of high schoolers who are terrorized by what appears to be the ghost of one of their classmates, Laura Barns (Heather Sossaman), who was bullied into taking her own life one year prior. Now, on the anniversary of her death, Laura's back to get her sweet revenge. Originally titled Cybernatural, Unfriended takes the basic principles of the supernatural horror genre and puts a cyber-twist on them. In that respect, it feels like a fresh take on a familiar storyline. However, as far as genuine scares go, the film doesn't really have much bite to back up its bark. Likewise, its Blu-ray release is woefully absent of special features, so even though picture and audio quality meet expectations, curious horror fans should beware.
