I think Fellowship is the best as it is the most intimate, it introduced us to Middle Earth and the scale is not crazy. Plus I think the CGI is not overtop in this one.
I agree with the ranking. I personally enjoyed all of them, my least favorite was the Unexpected Journey; the pacing was too slow, I could have cut some scenes out of leave them for extended version
the third LOTR installment: return of the king, is the best of the entries. fellowship of the ring is a close and solid second best.
