Idris Elba Responds to Those James Bond Rumors

Vulture:

Among the detritus uncovered by the Sony hack was studio co-chair Amy Pascal's following six-word gem: "Idris should be the next bond." The possibility, which previously only existed in the personal casting couches of our minds, sent tremors throughout the Internet, with the likes of Rush Limbaugh getting apoplectic over the idea of a black James Bond. On Saturday, Idris himself used Twitter to issue his own adorably modest response.

I don't know if we need to start changing the ethnicity of such established characters.

Especially when the creator of the character Ian Fleming described Bond as "the son of a Scottish father, Andrew Bond, of Glencoe, and a Swiss mother, Monique Delacroix, of the Canton de Vaud". Now I don't know about you but to me this small description doesn't give me the impression Bond would be black.

Lets face it, despite Idris being a good actor it's not the acting skills they would be interested in, it's the fact his ethnic background would cause a stir in the media which would give the new film with him in much attention.

They did the same with the Annie remake, they used race as a gimmick and exploited it to keep an old franchise "fresh" and "different". Same goes for gender with the all female Ghostbuster remake.

I'm sorry but it's not racist to think that Bond should be kept white. Not everyone has to change ethnic backgrounds just because it's 2014 and it seems morally "right".

Fleming created Bond as a white Scottish man...so where does that take your argument? If you want to stay true to the original character all actors who've played Bond, except Sean Connery, would be unacceptable! I see Bond as a recruit of MI6 - which could be anyone!

Whether we need it or not, they (Hollywood) started a long time ago. This wouldn't surprise me if it did happen. I love Idris but I'm not sure if I'm ready for a black Bond. Minor comic book characters like Deadshot and Perry White I can live with. Bond is too iconic to drastically change for the sake of awes and omg's.

I think he'd be great. If James Bond is a codename, then there's no reason why not to have any Bond you want. All the movies except Skyfall have just repeated the same stories anyway.

i personally don't think he would do a good job anyway

It would have been an ineteresting change
