This weekend sees the release of Nightcrawler where, if early reviews are to be believed, Gyllenhaal appears like audiences has never seen him before: a haggard, despicable shell of a man, a tabloid journalist of the lowest order seeking out the sickest, most perverse stories in the dark underbelly of LA. The film has been getting rave reviews, but Gyllenhaal’s performance seems to tower above all else.
No better time, then, to have a look over that rather spartan IMDb entry and weigh up what were the greatest triumphs (and, yes, even on a CV that small, the occasional blips) in his career thus far. Here are five awesome Jake Gyllenhaal performances, and five that royally sucked.
Testament The Story of Moses Review: The series depicts Moses' journey from an outcast and murderer to a prophet and liberator of the Hebrews. It interweaves docudrama and interviews, to present a more humanly image of the prophet.
Rest In Peace Review: A man in debt disappears. Years later, he considers reconnecting with his family, but his previous life takes him by surprise.
Nerd Reactor writes that a new international post has revealed the return of a fan-favorite Toho monster.
He wasn't terrible in End of watch and he was easily the best thing in Prince of Persia. Agree with everything else. Jake's a great actor though and I'm really looking forward to seeing Nightcrawler.
