Deadline: Fury continues its storm this AM as it heads to a mid-$20M weekend for Sony and QED, which really needed this picture to work. This is Sony’s third No. 1 film at the box office in a row, following the record $34.1M opening for The Equalizer and Screen Gems’ $24.2M opening for No Good Deed. The budget for their newest — the well-reviewed war pic starring Brad Pitt — is around $68M, according to the studio, which we know financed 100% of the picture; QED is distributing through Italy, the all-important China and Japan through partners there. All in, with marketing and distribution costs here and abroad, they are looking at around $150M to recoup. Pitt’s box office prowess both here and internationally is helping to lift this picture as it rolls out as helmer David Ayer’s last outings as director (End of Watch, Sabotage) have not performed well overseas.
