Born in Chicago in 1951, Williams was raised in a prosperous family, his father, Robert, an executive with the Ford Motor Company, while his mother, Laurie, worked as model. Both had children from earlier marriages, but Robin was raised alone as an only child. He was bullied at school, and would seek out comedic routes to deflect violent attention. He spent much of his childhood by himself, developing his fervent imagination.
