Hercules (2014) Review | FilmGamesEtc

Over the years, the realm of Greek mythology has been thoroughly mined by Hollywood screenwriters looking to cash in on the historical and fantastical properties so often associated with the stories these myths tell. Movies such as Clash of the Titans, Immortals, and Troy offer plenty of cinematic spectacle while also presenting their associated myths to newer generations of movie-goers who may not be familiar with the source material. Few myths have received this treatment more so than the myth of Hercules (or Heracles for all your purists out there). From the older Italian films of the 1960’s, to Disney’s lovable 1997 animated rendition, to The Legend of Hercules which was released earlier this year, Hollywood can’t seem to get enough of the fabled son of Zeus. But does director Brett Ratner’s newest rendition, which stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the titular hero, deserve a place amongst the pantheon of Greek greatness?
