10 Reasons Why The Original 'Robocop' Can't Be Beaten By The Remake

The Playlist:
With the remake of Paul Verhoeven's "Robocop" lumbering mechanically into theaters nationwide this week, there has been a lot of talk, online and elsewhere, about how the remake simply cannot live up to the 1987 original. But what there's been precious little of is a discussion of why the original film is so highly regarded; instead the deafening pre-release backlash just seems like a general kind of foggy, nostalgia-tinged outrage that is both inarticulate and unhelpful. And, all things considered, the remake isn't all that bad; read our colleague's review here. Still, there's no question that the remake won't manage to have the same kind of impact the original did, so we're taking this chance (having longed for one for a while) to look back to the future of Detroit, and examine exactly why that original film felt so fresh and new.

I don't really care what their reasons are but you just can't remake some of the old classics. Just like The Magnificent Seven. I'll probably go see it when it finally gets done just out of curiosity but you can't outdo Brenner and McQueen, not to mention the rest of them. That was just one of those old western classics.

It should be noted that The Magnificent Seven was a remake of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. ;)

Not that I don't think there is potential for a good movie in there somewhere, studio interference makes it practically impossible. Daren Arofonosky was once considering this project! Of course he realized it would inevitably have to be PG-13. From what I hear Jose Padhilla does an admirable job, but it is still a far cry from the original.

wait till they decide to remake movies like Bullet, Ben-Hur and the good, the bad and the ugly. lets be honest its only a matter of time, hollywood needs to PG up everything for a "modern" generation.

the original robocop back in its time was a very innovative movie and was very unique that alone makes it very hard to beat out even if the new robocop movie is good, it has to be more than good, it must have something special, something refreshing, for it to stand toe to toe with the original.
beating out an original is very hard to do but sometimes it can be done if the new film really has what it takes, all the necessary formulas, movies such as scarface, the fly etc were even remakes that totally defeated the original.
for robocop on the other hand their were some cool ideas like the new costume, it had good supporting actors, the guy who played robocop looks good and of course the special effects were improved but it would need a little bit more for it to be at par with the original.
