Uncharted Movie: What the New Director Means to You

IGN: There might be a new director for the Uncharted movie. Does his hiring mean that Jason Bateman is a shoo-in for Drake?

-Foxtrot3730d ago

It's going to suck, like all video game films

All Sony needed to do was get Amy Henning to rewrite the games script, condense the script, take out the gameplay sequences and then cast Nolan, Emily and Richard because they are the characters.

I'm hoping this gets cancelled again

Sounds like a straight to dvd movie. Not to pick on you dude, but I think you are being a bit fanboyish here. Nolan North is great, but he doesn't strike me as somebody with screen presence. I doubt people are going to want to see a movie with a voice actors they aren't familiar with.

And it would be disappointing for them to simply rehash a plot out of the game. Drake is more than the sum of his parts. He's like an Indiana Jones type character, ripped straight out of the pages of 50s serials and planted into the modern world. These stories are meant to be episodic in nature. Jones is always chasing after some new relic in every movie. Give us a new story, that retains a lot of the qualities of the games. The most important aspect of the games is the characters and themes. It's not that there is a specific plot that defines Drake, outside of his unrelenting quest to unveil the discoveries of his long lost ancestor, Sir Francis Drake.

The framework for a great adventure movie is there already. I think the biggest mistake they could make would be for them to try to rehash the game. It would be awesome of course to see them recreate some of the action set pieces, but have some faith!

If fanboyish in your terms means caring about the franchise so it's not ruined by a crappy movie which dosen't ressemble anything about the games then yeah maybe I am

Nolan is Drake, his character is based around Nolans personality. I'm pretty sure Sony can take a risk and cast them three, all they need to do is get the villains played by big star actors they can use in promotional material.

"And it would be disappointing for them to simply rehash a plot out of the game. Drake is more than the sum of his parts."

Well I rather have that then a movie which is going to be nothing like the games like EVERY OTHER VIDEO GAME FILM.

They've tried it their way for years, how about the other way, doing a film sticking by the source material as close as you can.

"These stories are meant to be episodic in nature. Jones is always chasing after some new relic in every movie."

But this film is being based on Drakes Fortune meaning it's going to take elements of the game anyway, may aswell just stick to the source material. The treasure and setting are going to be the same.

"I think the biggest mistake they could make would be for them to try to rehash the game"

How can it be a mistake if they've NEVER done it before. Seriously Hollywood messes up these video game films because they stray away from the source material, have they ever tried sticking close to it.....no, they havent, so I think for once they should do that

People and gamers would rather have a good film based on the game sticking close to the source material then a crappy film which tries to be different and s**** all over it like so many video game films have done.

It's time for change and this is a perfect time to do it since the games script is half way done

I don't think all videogame adaptations are terrible. Silent Hill successfully captured the tone of the games, and Mortal Kombat was excellent in the way it recreated all the stages. These films are not without their flaws, but I still had fun with them. Then again I don't go into a movie like Resident Evil or Tomb Raider expecting a masterpiece. I still think Uncharted has the potential to be a great movie in it's own right.

I don't think you give Naughty Dog enough credit though. They have created a rich enough universe - there is room for interpretation as long as certain elements are kept intact. The film must undoubtedly follow Drake's efforts to uncover some mystery first discovered by his ancestor. The character dynamic of Drake, Sully and Elena must stay intact. The globe trotting and over the top action set pieces are also a must.

The filmmakers must also be allowed to put their own stamp on the product. This is a point that I think is lost on fanboys, especially in the realm of comics. Part of what made Nolan's Batman trilogy so memorable is that he was able to put his own 'stamp' on the property. If you are only interested in adapting a property verbatim, than what is the point? The medium of film is different from that of comics and videogames, and for good reason.

Also, I doubt a studio is going to be interested in budgeting a multi-million dollar picture without a star headlining. This isn't necessarily a bad thing! I love Nolan North but as I said, there is a difference between voice acting and stage acting, stage actors are really good at their job for a reason.

If this idiot director doesn't do his Uncharted homework and casts Nathon Filion as Drake, then I'm done with video game movies. Hollywood is purposely making these movies into trash so they can keep any revenue they can from the gaming industry....if that makes sense.

-Foxtrot3729d ago

I dont understand why people want Nathan Fillion, him and Nolan North are both no names in Hollywood and big blockbusters so why not get Nathan Drake himself then a person who looks a little like him

Section83729d ago

If you have to ask that than you're an idiot. The only actor who actually even resembles Nathan Drake is Fillion. That's what fans want, actors who like like and act like the characters they're portraying.

The problem with this kind of movie is that the game is already cinematic. The characters look realistic and they already have their own personality. Is not like they are adapting a SNES game where you can't even see the character's face.

The game is already movie. Why is there need for one?

Games like metroid, could be very well adapted to a movie, because Samus, for example is a blonde girl. It has never had a personality stablished ( I know other m did, but I'm just going to pretend that didn't exist because it sucked -the character, not the game-) and she didn't talk, so it could work (like the live action commercial for other m)

It's going to be very weird to see Drake with other face, other personality and other voice for the movie, as well as the other characters. Sum up that they most likely will not get it even right, and it's terrifying to think about.

Wherever there is money to be made hollywood will try to take it

I agree with you metroid would be awesome to see adapted into a movie but nope Hollywood rarely actually listens

KingPin3729d ago

i dont need an uncharted movie. the games are pretty great and the story is more involving than a movie.
also, if they really feel the need to make a movie, why dont they just make a complete CG movie instead and use the original voice actors.
