Not really

They would be doing it for the sake of it then

It's like those who want a female Doctor or a Black James Bond...it's just because it hasn't been done before not because it's the right choice.

RetrospectRealm3763d ago

Well, we had a black Disney princess.

I'm pretty sure every time they do a Disney princess with a different ethnicity it's for 'the sake of it'.

xXBlondieVanHarlowXx3762d ago

Agreed. Kinda sad how the word "need" gets tossed around nowadays.

Although technically it's always been a "for the sake of it" thing. For the sake of money.

This is a joke right? Please tell me someone didn't approve this article to go live on the internet.

We don't need a Latina princess looking all attractive, sexier, finer, lovely, magnificent, exquisite, more charming than the other princesses. Forget that. It's never going to happen. Ever. Why would you want one. It's Disney for crying out loud. You saw what they did to that black princess. Need I say more.

maniacmayhem3762d ago

What did they do to that black princess?

Unztayble3762d ago

She was a frog for the majority of the film I believe it was.

maniacmayhem3762d ago

Why not have a Latin princess? I don't see anything wrong with creating a movie based around the latin culture featuring a female latin lead.

coolbeans3762d ago (Edited 3762d ago )

That's what's kind of strange/sad about some of the comments here. Just like the article is suggesting, it would be neat to have a princess of this ethnicity that has a story stitched around that sort of heritage. How anyone here is able to instantly determine this would be a reactionary thing "just for the sake of it" is beyond me.

"How anyone here is able to instantly determine this would be a reactionary thing "just for the sake of it" is beyond me."

It's all about how you present an idea. If the article was "we need a Disney movie based off latin heritage", then I think people would have been like "oh that sounds fun". However, the idea is that we don't need a latin heritage movie per say, just a token latin princess, which is why you have the reactionary responses.

"If the article was 'we need a Disney movie based off latin heritage',"

Some of text within the article does state it like that...

"then I think people would have been like 'oh that sounds fun'."

...and this was not the typical outcome here.

admiralvic3762d ago

"Some of text within the article does state it like that... "

The title is "We need a Latina Princess" and the description is "Pixelvolt takes a look at the ethnic choices of Disney princesses." I don't care if Pixelvolt made a strong case for this stance or if the article is well rounded, these two things give me the impression that this article is about the fact we need a latina princess because there is no latina princess. I shouldn't have to read the article and realize that they were possibly trolling for hits by using that title and description.

"...and this was not the typical outcome here."

If Filmwatch is anything like N4G (many of the same posters, so I assume it is), then very few people are going to read the article before commenting. I won't lie, I didn't read it myself, since the title and description put me off. Perhaps this is wrong, but they're still presenting the idea that we need a latin princess because we don't have one.

This is the same politically correct nonsense that some people try to create, which gets really annoying. We're starting to get to a point where you don't have characters, but a checklist of things you need. They should do it because they have a good idea or the movie would be interesting, not because that is a notch missing on a checklist.

-"I don't care if Pixelvolt made a strong case for this stance or if the article is well rounded, these two things give me the impression that this article is about the fact we need a latina princess because there is no latina princess."

First, one of those things giving you that impression is based off the subjective interpretation of the news submitter rather than the article itself. Second, the very fact that a rather innocuous title that's acting as a pitch would be enough to even disinter you or others from at least seeing their rationalizations (initially) and holding onto capricious assumptions really puts your preconceived notions regarding these kind of 'SWJ' articles at fault, rather than Pixelvolt "trolling for hits."

"...but they're still presenting the idea that we need a latin princess because we don't have one."

And there's really nothing wrong with suggesting it like that because of how open-ended that is. From a publisher standpoint, it's eye-catching enough to make them look at the market for it and what their artists can explore.

"This is the same politically correct nonsense that some people try to create, which gets really annoying. We're starting to get to a point where you don't have characters, but a checklist of things you need."

Sure, there's always that sense of overhanging artificiality regarding many artistic choices regarding ethnicity that could in turn be just as questionable, possibly harmful to their own intent: as if those physical characteristics thus informs an audience of their true ideals and behavior.

Why o why3762d ago

Doesn't matter what the reason is. More are needed and I'm not Latino. Nothing wrong with showing our kids that there are non white princess's. There are actually more real princess's of ethnicity in the world than white ones. Nothing wrong with wanting a fairer balance even if they can be fobbed off as token gestures. Thats how things start....with the first
