Well justified review, watched this last night at the IMAX...absolutely loved it. Where the first Hobbit hobbled out the gate with pacing issues and not knowing how the tone should be set till the final half-hour; this continued to impress all the way through.
Very interested to see if this POV camera work gets picked up by the wider internet audience, I had a good laugh about it with my friend afterwards as it was quite odd in what was an otherwise excellent spectacle.
Ultimately, I would give the Desolation of Smaug the same rating, for all the points you made already - and personally for walking in tired and slightly skeptical (after the first Hobbit) and leaving thrilled with a cliff-hanger semi in my pants; it was a a great experience.
