"that explores dark and complex themes"

That's the problem, it looks at those themes and does jack crap with them. It didn't explore them, or provide any insights to them, just sort of threw them up there to look deeper than it was. The end result is aside from Tony getting his balls back nothing else had changed much.

It didn't explore the terror themes very deeply, nor the fact that Pepper and Stark's relationship has other issue, or anything else like that. At the end of the film, there's nothing for the audience to take away aside from "Oh man that was a cool final battle".

Iron Man the darkest and most complex? Bruce Banner has been on the run from the government and has deep psychological issues and emotional barriers from having to change into a giant green beast. Thor has had his home nearly destroyed by the brother he grew up with and once loved. Captain America is a man out of time who had to give up his life, his love, to go above and beyond the call of duty when needed.

Tony Stark is a rich mechanic with alcohol issues and a hot wife.

Not a really big fan of Iron Man but I thought that the script for this movie was especially sloppy. A lot of the characters could have been written out - their roles were not very significant(Lucky, War Machine, that scientist lady).

Not only that, but we are supposed to believe that the events of the Avengers have traumatized Stark but they only loosely reference them. It doesn't feel like a cohesive universe. If I recall Shield doesn't even play a big role in the movie compared to Iron Man 2 which introduced us to two Shield characters.

The villain was also kind of weak.

i think the first iron man is the best film behind the avengers. it was a better film overall. ironman 3 had a potential but i did not like some scenes especially how they took out the main villain.

The story for this movie was terrible. Look what they did with Mandarin. When I saw that it turned me off to how they butchered it. How could Marvel be so stupid. Other than that one issue the movie was great.
