The Playlist's TIFF Review: 'Felony' Written By & Starring Joel Edgerton

The Playlist:
Malcolm Toohey is a textbook example of a good cop, as we see in the opening of "Felony," written by and starring Joel Edgerton. Toohey is the kind of police officer that doesn't hesitate to charge into a dangerous situation, and by the end of the early moments of the film, his actions find him taking two shots to his bulletproof vest protected chest, all in the name of bringing down a bit player in a much bigger criminal ring. It's the kind of bravery that has earned him the respect of his colleagues. Meanwhile, on the homefront, with a beautiful wife and two young kids, things couldn't look better. But one bad decision, followed by a heat-of-the-moment lie, is all it takes for Malcolm's life to potentially unravel around him. What begins with so much promise in "Felony" is undone by a story that prefers sensationalist melodrama over tackling the much more interesting ethical dilemmas it brings up for its characters.

Watch: First International Trailer For Police Thriller 'Felony' Starring Joel Edgerton

The Playlist:
Unlike his “Warrior” co-star Tom Hardy, Australian actor Joel Edgerton has stuck to being part of smaller films and taking smaller roles like his outing as a member of Seal Team Six in “Zero Dark Thirty," Baz Luhrmann’s gaudy adaptation of “The Great Gatsby” notwithstanding. Edgerton’s latest is the Australian film “Felony” which, in addition to starring in, he both wrote and produced. The film’s first trailer and poster have both arrived online for your keen minds to investigate.

Coming off a strong performance in last year’s Warrior, star Joel Edgerton has committed to writing and starring in the thriller Felony. Matthew Saville (Noise) is onboard to direct, and the logline is as follows:

Driving home after a celebration drink with his team after the long waited bust of a major gang, a decorated police officer (Edgerton) runs a young cyclist off the road. As he gives CPR to the child, fellow officers arrive to take his statement. In a split second decision he tells them a lie about the accident which will change all their lives in this edge of your seat thriller.
