Laser Lemming's Chris Patton reviews the latest demonic soul to add its name to the list of horror icons like Chucky and Jason: Stitches (Ross Noble). At one point, Stitches uses a blender to brain screw a teen, but nothing in the film tops the balloon death. The sequence is laugh out loud schlock of the highest caliber that, for some, is worth the 86 minutes of build-up. For everyone else, Stitches is a formulaic homage to what we’ve all seen before from the likes of Night of the Demons, and any other blood-splattered affair from the days of yore.
Years after a cruel kids’ prank during a birthday party for 8-year-old Tommy (Tommy Knight, Doctor Who, The Sarah Jane Adventures) left hired clown Richard “Stitches” Grindle (Ross Noble) dead on the kitchen floor, the childhood friends gather to plan a birthday bash to end all bashes. But they haven’t counted on the degenerate jester rising from the grave to seek vengeance on the children who mocked him and caused his grisly, untimely end. Now Tommy and his teenage friends are on the run from an undead jokester who’s ready to use every trick in the book (and many that aren’t) to exact his revenge. McMahon delivers a delirious slasher epic, a hilariously twisted and blood-soaked tale of one very bad clown with a talent for making balloon animals – but with one very hideous difference..
Stitches is OK, not sure how it will play with American audiences though. Some great gore gags in it.
Can't help feelin' whenever I see a clown any clown, Ronald McDonald comes to mind..
Clickonline writes: "For what it’s worth, the kills in Stitches are more inventive than your average horror and presented better than most despite the low budget roots of the film. But everything else is so poorly crafted that even gore hounds may find the experience ultimately unsatisfactory."
