Geek Binge: The Master begins with an opus of sound and images. We see a man we would later know as Freddie (played expertly by Joaquin Phoenix). He is a disaster. He drinks excessively, he’s vulgar, and he’s unstable. But that’s Freddie; he is chaos incarnate. Once you understand that Freddie is who he is, you will understand both the object and the subject of The Master: the meeting of the unstoppable force and the immovable object.
