It is strange to think how this form of animation has seemingly outlasted even the more traditional and popular 2-D animated arts in terms of production. Very few 2-D films ever make it to the big screen anymore but somehow we are still graced with the beautiful art form of classic stop motion animation every couple of years thanks to studios such as Laika and Aardman.
