The Dark Knight Rises Sets A Box Office Record In Its Opening Weekend

CB - This weekend, out of respect for the victims and those affected by the tragic events in Aurora, Colorado this past weekend, Warner Bros. chose not to release the official day-to-day box office numbers for Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. It was a smart move by the studio, as it would have been classless to boast blockbuster numbers in the wake of such a tragedy while people were still trying to recover from the shock of the events. Now, however, WB has sent out the figures and as you probably could have guessed, Batman was the leader of the pack.

How did it set a record when it only had the third highest grossing weekend of all-time? Did I miss something or read something wrong here? Confused...

JL4294d ago

It's the biggest non-3D opening ever.

SHA4294d ago

Ah ha! Saw that going back and reading it a second time. My bad...

INehalemEXI4294d ago

I got to see this one of these days, I love batman films.

aviator1894294d ago

biggest 2-d opening. if it indeed have 3-d ticket sales, i'm sure it'd top the list, but nolan didn't want to resort to gimmicky 3-d just to draw in more revenue and I'm glad he didn't.

Trenta274294d ago

Same. Shows the power he has over WB to say no to the 3D. =D

Ares84HU4294d ago

What makes 3D gimmicky?? I would love to see your response.

Azmatik4294d ago

how about 3d sucks for movies like batman

MWH4294d ago (Edited 4294d ago )

a proof that media can own and direct people.

neutralgamer194294d ago

This movie was disappointing. Fifteen minutes of action and the movie was close to three hours long.

Drazz4294d ago

Nolan makes art, if u want actionfest wait for expendables.

cyborg474294d ago (Edited 4294d ago )

@neutral, I had the same opinion after my first watch, but watched it again and realized how awesome the movie was! 10/10 from me :D

Deputydon4294d ago

What a lovely, lovely voice!

perdie4294d ago

Well maybe action/drama movies aren't right for you

Drazz it is my opinion. In no shape or form was that art. Sorry dude the movie was not all that and made my son fall asleep. I myself am 33 and was like meh.

If you want to see a great movie watch Spiderman. That movie was awesome from start to finish.

Sorry im not a fan that just hypes up anything a certain director or producer spews out.

MWH4294d ago

i hear you buddy, don't expect more than this from today's kids though.. they are media cheeps.

Nes_Daze4294d ago

You remind me of all the movie critics that bring down Dark Knight just because it is a Nolan film. I don't know what people have against that man, he obviously makes amazing movies, nothing less. Spiderman was a good movie, but even with the flaws DKR had, it still wasn't better. I think the first Spiderman did a much better job in introducing the "birth" of the hero. I could go on and on..

awiseman4294d ago (Edited 4294d ago )

You lost me when you said the Spiderteen reboot was better than Batman Begins...

mamotte4294d ago

Comparing one of the most funny superheroes with one of the darkest superheroes?

Next week: My little Pony-Friendship is Magic, Vs. Evangelion.

Nes_Daze4294d ago

@mamotte, I was simply replying to neutralgamer, you guys need to read into things a bit more before going on such nerd rages.

awiseman4294d ago (Edited 4294d ago )

You marvel fanboys are a joke. Most of you are just mad that Nolan can put together masterpieces and Marvels latest reboot was a cash in for Disney's teen girls.

Dms20124294d ago

Sony owns the rights to Spiderman, not Disney.

Nes_Daze4294d ago

I meant that the first Spiderman did a better job than the reboot, imo none of the Spiderman movies come close to Batman Begins or any of the Batman movies for that matter.

cyborg474294d ago

Spiderman?! and you're 33!? LOL!

gaden_malak4294d ago

While Spiderman was good the massive plot holes and dropped stories puts it below TDKR

YoungKingDoran4294d ago

Whilst I really like Nolan's other movies, this movie was definitely the worst thing he has ever done.

Sorry, movie was bad, no ifs or buts.
It seems no one is willing to face this fact.
We were all hyped for this movie sure, but people are saying it was perfect and a masterpiece for the sake of saying it’s a masterpiece.

I would love to go into things in detail but don’t want to post spoilers, but i will anyway and try to keep it short:

***************************** ******************************* *********** SPOILERS ****************************** ***********************

Beginning was ridiculously stupid and pointless (yeah, i get the fact they needed the scientist, how about they uh... just kidnap him properly?)
why would any scientist turn a reactor into a 4 megaton bomb to save *his own* life... yeah that worked out well for him.
The middle was rife with nonsense, boring Gotham politics and economics,
The action? I don’t want to see batman VS Gotham Police. Okay, “Nolan makes art” well ... but... I’m kind of watching BATMAN.
The relationship between batman and catwoman was pathetic and totally under developed.
At least in batman returns they fought, thought each other was sexy, batman couldn’t kill her cause they develop feelings.
But in this movie, they talk, she fcks over batman, they dance, she fcks over batman, they talk, saves batman, batman loves catwoman.

Someone at my work was trying to tell me that the chick is canon in the batman comic storylines.
I don’t care what’s canon in the goddamn comics. Am I reading a comic?
If its such an awesome twist, then how come nobody knows her name.
Okay, okay, maybe if you’re actually reading all this you do know her name. but a lot of regular people (regular: not hanging out on movie forums and such) don’t know her name.
I asked that same guy telling me it was canon
“What was the bad guy’s name?”
He said “bane”
I said “okay what was the real mastermind’s name?”
Him: “...uhhhh”
Wrong answer chump!!!

Then he comes up to me about 10 minutes later, "omg i just remembered, it was tahlia" and he didn’t even get a response cause I know he looked it up.

How about how bane himself talked about being born / raised in the darkness
And it turns out he wasn’t.
If Tahlia was trained by the league of shadows shouldn’t she be a lot more capable than she was at the end?
*be a helpless woman throughout entire movie* *stabs batman* "hey im actually the bad guy" *gets into truck... continues to be a helpless woman*

Robin was some cop running around like a goose.

Alfred was in the movie for maybe 15 minutes in total and cried for 14 of those minutes.

Even though I made sure I was not overly hyped for this movie, I was looking forward to it.
And personally was a letdown for me.

This is the longest post I think I will ever type, got abit carried away. Pretty sure no one will read it all anyway haha. This is my very informal review and I hope I didn’t ruin anything for anyone, and do not take this as a personal attack towards yourself like many people do with reviews on something they like. I might watch TDKR again, and I might enjoy it more. Conversely, you might watch it again and hate it. That’s life dudes, enjoy whatever movies you want!

I'll shutup now. Believe it or not i have a job and work to do lol.

r214294d ago

god this was long to read :L ok let me clear a few things seeing as you missed on alot of details, were you not paying attention? btw SPOILERS

'Beginning was ridiculously stupid and pointless (yeah, i get the fact they needed the scientist, how about they uh... just kidnap him properly?)'
Bane did this to make everyone on the world think the scientist died in the crash but in actuality, he put the doc's blood into a corpse to 'convince' the world.

'why would any scientist turn a reactor into a 4 megaton bomb to save *his own* life... yeah that worked out well for him.'
he didnt, he did it so his family would stay safe

'The middle was rife with nonsense, boring Gotham politics and economics,'
this was done so the audience could get an idea on how Gotham folks work

'The action? I don’t want to see batman VS Gotham Police. Okay, “Nolan makes art” well ... but... I’m kind of watching BATMAN. '
the 'vs police' thing was like i dont know 15-20 minutes long? the other battles involved the police with batman :L

'The relationship between batman and catwoman was pathetic and totally under developed.'
maybe, but they just met and all. wasnt pathetic, i actually liked how catwoman or Selina flirted and toyed with Batman/Bruce like in the comics and where the hell did Batman pronounce his love for her? i actually paid attention to the movie and did not see such a thing :L

'How about how bane himself talked about being born / raised in the darkness
And it turns out he wasn’t.
If Tahlia was trained by the league of shadows shouldn’t she be a lot more capable than she was at the end?
*be a helpless woman throughout entire movie* *stabs batman* "hey im actually the bad guy" *gets into truck... continues to be a helpless woman*'
yeah i was confused bout this but this is normal as Nolan likes to confuse people(inception). tahlia did all that to mislead batman to think she was innocent the whole time and when batman truly let his guard down, she stabbed him and she did so to protect his beloved protector, bane.

'Robin was some cop running around like a goose.'
At least he trying to help Gotham seeing as Batman wasnt around :L

'Alfred was in the movie for maybe 15 minutes in total and cried for 14 of those minutes.'
he was in for half an hour, if you cont all his scene togher, i assume. anyways, Alfred did not want any part of letting Bruce die, all he wanted for him was to live a normal life but instead Bruce chose differently. Beside how can Bruce trust Alfred as he lied to him about the break letter from Bruce's dead lover.

oh man, i had to read your bloody long ignorant post. i think avengers is more up your alley seeing as it was just an action film with marvel folks tossed in together where as TDKR had all sorts of mindfucks, action and drama.

YoungKingDoran4294d ago

@r21
right on dude, i put my thoughts down thanks for you to judge me as ignorant and telling me what kinda movie i might prefer like im a kid.
i didnt attack you so dont attack me.

the avengers was a fun film. personally i liked the first two batmans more than it.
like alot of things, movies are subjective.
YOU believe there was good character development between Bruce and Selina.

i stand by my statement of the intro sucking. oh, dont worry, i got the whole blood swap thing. that was crazier than then the whole plane destruction thing.

as much as i love my family, i dont think i could destroy an entire city and thousands of people to save them. maybe you could. but i dont think im the only one.
Tahlia should still have been at least alittle ninja-y after the reveal.

Sorry for not having my "Alfred screen time facts" up to your standard. regardless, he cried alot. i understand that old movie trick too "old guy cries, now I'm sad, this movie is SO emotional"
and if the ending is to be taken literally that Alfred did indeed see bruce and Selina, im pretty sure they liked each other a little. yes, no love was procalimed.

Hey i didnt totally hate the movie. but its the worst of the 3 and thus for me abit of a letdown. i wouldnt say it had "all kinds of mindfucks, action" but i will agree there was drama.
