With its quirky, slightly dry and slightly dark humor, ”Moonrise Kingdom” successfully captures feelings of childhood nostalgia. Even though it has nearly all of the staples expected of Anderson, it still feels very fresh.
The one Anderson staple (mostly) absent from “Moonrise Kingdom” is a group of dysfunctional adults. This is a film about young love, childhood innocence and the early stages of growing up. Anderson explores his new territory with expertise, setting it apart from his other features in spite of its familiarity.
