The Toughest Scene I Wrote: James Gunn on Writing Thanos Into Guardians of the Galaxy

Vulture: Over the next few weeks, Vulture will speak to the screenwriters behind 2014's most acclaimed movies about the scenes they found most difficult to crack. Which pivotal sequences underwent the biggest transformations on their way from script to screen? Today we put that question to a very reluctant James Gunn, who admits that there's still one scene in his summer megahit Guardians of the Galaxy that he doesn't think he quite nailed. The scene is then excerpted below.

I agree. The scene were Thanos was arguing with Ronan. In the end Ronan was like 'well I'm not giving you the stone so take that!' and Thanos was like 'well, see if I care!'

It didn't give the impression that this big Purple guy is not to be messed with. He just looked like a big baby on a floating chair. Other than that a perfect film.

His indifference proves his power. It was as if a fly had gotten near his face and he couldn't be bothered with it. Or like a child throwing a tantrum and the parent ignoring the behavior instead of reinforcing it. Thanos does not need an explanation for his actions. If you know the comics just seeing him on screen is menacing enough because you already know who he is. If you are not knowledgeable though and have no idea what goes on in the comics I can see your point of view. I thought it was done well and I think Gunn doesn't give himself enough credit.

The fact that Thanos lets him in his presence is enough.

Thanos is like that high school jock that's really protective of his super hot girlfriend. Ronan was just the nerd that wanted to be a jock, who got beat up by a bunch of meddling kids and their raccoon.

If Peter Quill thinks he can beat me at a dance off, he's in for a rude awakening. Give me a beat off that walkman and it's curtains for him. Curtains I say!

What were we talking about? Oh yeah, Thanos. Fun fact, that floating chair doubles as a toilet.

The Thanos scene was cheesy as hell, I think some peoples geekiness just over analyzes what's otherwise generic and cliche, and somehow makes them think its super cool.

The creepy smile part was cool.
