Feels great knowing that I can just fork over $10 when I feel like playing the first party Xbox games on my Xbox One X. I plan to do this the months Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2, and Crackdown 3 launch and will do so with every new first party launch.

I should be spending about $60 this year to play and finish all the first party launches of 2018. Great deal!

Wow! I'll be able to enjoy and complete all those Games on my PC (Via play anywhere) for a mere 10$.

I probably won't buy any of their Single player games and just rent it for 10$, complete it so I don't ever have to pay again for said title. 10$ and nothing more to complete a just released title, awesome deal!

I'll keep my purchase for the multiplayer games.

@Obscure_Observer Last time I checked (about 30 seconds ago) it worked. If you subscribe to Game Pass on Xbox you can play the games that support Crossbuy games on PC. It even has a "free with gamepass" label on the Windows store.

I don't think Microsoft have ever confirmed that being the case though, and I wouldn't bank on it staying that way forever. Hopefully Microsoft will be able to extend the service to PC properly in the near future.

We are but many people can't see 1 meter in front of themselves. It is classic Microsoft when they have nothing to offer just give it away for almost free to undercut and erode everything. Tankcrossing is right.. eventually you will be only be playing games are invited to the club. Quality can also decrease. Exclusives don't have to worry about being good because you are already paying for that membership. Microsoft and other companies if they adopt this can further narrow and dictate what you are able to play.

That's actually great news. Definitely seeing a shift in their model. At this point, I think they want to get their games out there and keep expanding them (so multiplayer games mostly).

If this is the case, they won't need to release many new games. Just keep expanding the ones available. It's a different strategy, for sure. Also means they're not taking huge losses on Game Pass titles. Very interested in seeing how this plays out.

Now, they just need to release the games.

Yea, this is a win no matter how you look at it.

1. You get EVERY new MS published releases for $9.99/month along with 90-100 other major titles.
2. This will subsidize cost for lower earning titles and allow MS to publish a more diverse catalog without hurting bottom line.
3. The more people that subscribe the bigger the budget for game production is

One negative is, this means they are putting the onus for game funding on their consumer base by tying game funding to this service, however, I think the plus sides outweighs down greatly.

That said, if Sony or Nintendo released this same product for $9.99 (or even $15.00 as frankly their first party titles are much more diverse and more titles) I would also be on that day 1, even without the additional 90-100 tit0es game pass offers.

That all aside, I imagine most people will still just buy the game normally for the near future anyway.

Sony giving away games doesn't make any sense whatsoever! But what I said about MS does, you just don't see it!

SP games you play once, so if MS releases a new SP game one can play it for a month for $10, then cancel the sub again, making them less money than selling it for $60. MP games you aren't done with after a month, if it's a fun game you either want to keep playing or want to return to it sooner or later so you either will need to keep the sub or keep getting it at $10 a month for each month you play it. This then could potentially make them even more money than just $60.

Hence why I said that I now see why MS prefers non-SP games!

Fyi. First party games don't get removed. You don't HAVE to buy game pass, if you want your "ownership" you can still buy the game at full price. The price will likely never change. Even if it did. Not by much. Netflix only raised its price once by a dollar or something. In fact i cant remember the last time a subscription service raised its price significantly.

What truth? Microsoft deslikes SP games? That´s a LIE made up by YOU!

Microsoft´s biggest games like Halo, Forza and Gears are SP games with Multiplayer Modes, just like Uncharted, TLOU, Killzone and Bloodborne! I know Sony Playstation has lots of exclusive SP games more than Microsoft, but, what about SP only games like; Recore, Ori, Cuphead and Quantum Break, hu?

As far as i can tell, Xbox One´s only Multiplayer focused game will be Sea of Thieves in contrast with Sony´s first party games like The Tomorrow Children and their ALL TIME biggest franchise Gran Turismo, which they turn it into an always online multiplayer focused game!

ok, but how do the developers of these games make money off of this? They are missing out on $60 sales to people who get to play it for what is essentially maybe $3-5.

I wonder how they will profit from it. Maybe they need so many subs to break even and then any more is profit regardless..

I don't like the subscription stuff...I want to own my games as much as possible. I grew up with renting in the 90's....it's awesome when you are low on cash but I'd rather own a game for good.

Solid idea though....hopefully it works out well.

Physical Game ownership has taken a pretty big hit this gen. Incomplete games that need a download to play and games that require an internet connection/server are going to kill replay value in the future. Depending in the platform, digital games have a longer lifespan than physical.

Third party devs get money up front. Microsoft pays them to put it on game pass for a certain period. Could be years or months depending on the deal they made. Microsoft gets all the money from the new and recurring subscribers. As long as they don't lose subscribers they'll make money.

Game pass is $120 p/year. If 10million people subscribe that's 1.2bn in revenue. They could spend that money to fund new game development and make new deals for third parties to appear on it. A high budget game costs around 60million to make. They could afford to develop several high budget games and not worry about the risks at all. Cuz even if it bombs they won't lose money as long as they're not losing subscribers.

@345.... I used to say the same thing ages ago when I used to buy DVD's and cd's. Now I can't remember the last time I bought a DVD. I had the "I like owning my physical disc" mentality too but most of my DVD's CD's and games are taking up space collecting dust. My point is that in this day and age people are going digital with everything because of sheer convenience. Just look at how Netflix started with DVD rentals and how big it got by going to streaming. Game pass is trying to follow that same formula.

I already subscribe to the Game Pass, and don't anticipate that I'll stop any time soon. Even if I did want to stop subscribing, no doubt the game would be cheaper by that point.

So the pre-order is basically a waste of money for me. No big deal, I'll find a non-subscriber (most likey a PC gamer) to give it to.

I used to buy a lot of games day one or pre-order...

I quit when I found games dropping 33% within a month after launch.

To me, pre-order and day one are dead for all except a few games that seem to get really positive feedback from gamers.

Yup, and that is the majority of people who buy consoles world-wide. There are about 3-6 million people out of the 100 million that buy consoles that eat, sleep and play games 24x7... The other 94-97 million play games when they can or have time as a enjoyable hobby. These services cater to the vast majority, not the minority that buys everything on day one and do all-nighters to complete the game in the first few days or weeks.

This is the game changer the industry needed for GaaS. Well done Microsoft. What I'm really interested in seeing is if in the future, Sony and MS can improve their services enough to create what are essentially the Netflixes of gaming. No need to download a game, just choose the game you wanna play and it'll stream effortlessly to your system.

This is the logical next step for gaming as soon as the tech is good enough. No more downloading games or needing the super powerful and often expensive tech to run them. Just stream the game onto your device from a supercomputer that handles everyone's streaming. What I'll be wondering is if I'll be searching for an hour to find something to play like I do when I "watch Netflix" and spend an hour trying to find something to watch.

It's great for the consumer, but at the same time, we're hearing about how expensive it is to make games, and GaaS is the way forward, and they go this route, where you essentially need 6 subs per download, per game, to make up what you could with a single unit sale in a traditional model.

While MS is obviously banking on recurring membership with this model....the so called, first month free then auto-renew after method which most people dont cancel, it still kind of goes against making more money on the software sale itself, and seems like the only way to truly make up the revenue would be through MT. This then begs the question, is MS just charging for access to what amounts to a F2P service system, and if so, is it really worth $10 per game, when most people already complain about these MT being placed into a game at any price already.

It seems MS is trying to normalize the F2P model, and make it into a payed service. I'd be surprised if their 1st run games that have no service model attached ever make this service day one....if MS ever manages to make another one of those at least.

good argument, but the problem with it is it’s already proven moot. State of Decay 2 is already part of this, and has been confirmed to not have loot boxes or MTs, just traditional dlc they have said. If anything, this argument further instills the MS belief that MAU is greater then Sales

That's a lot of reaching and speculation to come up with your conclusion.

These games are expensive to make and some of these games aren't garunteed to have the same interest as one another but with Game Pass this changes a lot. For example I was not interested in Sea of Thieves and was not going to play it but with the game on Game Pass I will definitely give it a try.

I suspect this will be the case for a lot of gamers on Xbox and an incentive for them to use Game Pass.

As for GaaS and MTs, this is the part I think you're reaching pretty thin in trying to tie this together especially when there are other games on this service and we have no idea just what these new games will have. Your applying it to future games you have never played and have no idea if they'll even be in the game or if it'll be as intrusive as you hope. Not to mention if those being optional or might only be cosmetic.

We have already heard that State2 won't have MTs but just regular DLC like most games.

Regardless of spin this is still a good deal and will definitely (hopefully) have more gamers trying these games when in other cases they probably wouldn't have.

Nice try. State of Decay 2 is a single/mutiplayer game which was already confirmed to not have MT or Lootboxes. Only paid dlcs. And it will be Day One with Game Pass for only 10$ a month!

Microsoft see a gaming subscription service as a big part of the windows 10 gaming future. This is the start of the process. They willl count game sales and subs into the overall scheme of things. They count the profits of the gaming division, and not just the games. This also hugely boosts the game pass as a sevice for not only new members, but current members too.

They will know how many people subscribe to EA access, and how many people still buy EA games. They will still expect microsoft studio games to sell single copies. Plus let's face it, alot of people who buy subscriptions probably auto renew, whether they use the service or not.

With the option to buy it 20% off 30 days after release. If you keep game pass. Obviously if they keep it up there as well. That part is going to be interesting. I have a feeling they'll take them off before the 30 days. But for my sake I hope they leave them up there. If they do then this'll make me buy gamepass.

Well you can also purchase the games for 20% off if you have game pass. So I'm sure they have some numbers somewhere that support the idea of it being a worthwhile investment because if someone enjoys the game then odds are they'll spend 48 bucks on the digital copy vs going and paying more at the store. Especially when it's already downloaded onto your system.

Simple, they own the rights to the game so the development has already been paid for. Doesn't matter now if the game sells 1 mil copies if more millions of people are already paying 10 bucks for a gaming service offered through xbox.

You're forgetting also about Microtransactions and DLC....there's still plenty of money to be had without having to drop 60 for a game. Thats 50 bucks left for dlc and microtransactions...

Yeah totally true but I have spouts of only having maybe a few hours a month to play. I don’t think this is directed at me at all. People like me like to be able to play a game throughout the year whenever we can. I do see the value in it for most gamers though. If they could really move to an Xbox ecosystem and get all their games on PC and offer this sub model there id be more inclined to check it out.

Well this is pretty nice, especially since they are available at launch.

Microsoft and Sony first party games generally drop to $20-$30 after only a few months, so if you have a backlog of games... it still may be cheaper to just buy them outright especially if you like physical disks for resale.

This is huge news and makes Game Pass a 100% viable and good option for an xbox owner. I also think this opens the door for the "next Xbox" to be disc-less. The need for a physical disc is dying and game pass ensures you wont need to worry about trading back a game, etc.... this is a masterful stroke of genius by MS. I also would not be shocked to see them release a disc-less Xbox One X hardware sku some time after this coming E3 at a reduced price point to make further inroads in the market with their new more capable machine.

I know retail is still a large chunk but I do think this is absolutely a road-map to disc-less. You are seeing more and more pre-built PC's both work space and gaming focused releasing with out a disc drive so I think it will happen. Likely I think MS would introduce it alongside an existing sku that offered a disc drive at maybe $50 less to test the waters and reception.

This will be great for the people who may be interested in a game but aren't willing to drop $30 or $60 on a game. Spend $10 and play a few games, if you like it then buy it with a 20% discount or at that point go buy physical.

I've already said above that there isn't anything negative you can say about this announcement.

But I will say it still won't be for everyone. If you're a disc person (like myself) it is usually for 1 of 2 reasons. Either you're a collector or you like to be able to sell your games when you're done with them.

So, this announcement doesn't really do anything for that crowd. If you wait for sales, you can end up selling games for only a few dollars less than you paid for them.

You're paying $170 a year for these as well, since these games require multiplayer and you have to get Gold on top of Game Pass to play them.

I can see each access adding newly released games to the vault but with limited play time like they do with early access. Something like 24 hours of play per month for new releases till they're fully added to the vault. Maybe make it a premium access that twice as much as the norm.

It doesnt say that at all, what it actually allows is for MS to take more risk and create more games. Having this as a foundation to fall on if another sp game fails or flops. The revenue stream will be big, even if people signed up for one day, imagine everyone who does on day one at 10 bucks compared to those who dont at 60. Then add a option of purchase at 48 bucks, you have a hire chance at a sale then a wait and see approach for sales and discounts months after release. People who plan to buy day one are still gonna buy day one, its a win win for xbox. Fable's up coming new game also say they haven't stop investing in sp games as well.

Well to answer the business side. It would still be up to the developer, for instance State of Decay 2 will not have MT's or loot boxes and will be a part of this program. However, I don't believe we will ever see MT's go away.

I have the Xbox Game Pass since it launched and although none of these upcoming games interest me I have to admit this is pretty cool by Microsoft I know they made tons of money in software. It still don't make me want an Xbox One X though enhanced games still can't make me want to run out and buy one a new Perfect Dark thats made the right way could though. I have over 700gbs left on my external is it true the Xbox One S can hook up more than 1 external hard drive and if so whats the maximum it can handle??

I can't imagine that this decision was made on a whim without them diving deep into market data and consumer data and going into this knowing they wouldn't make any money...

I don't think we will see an INCREASE in them, but they definitely aren't going anywhere. Also it is up to the dev to implement. Like in recent news Undead Labs announced that State of Decay 2 will not have loot boxes or MT's instead will just have paid DLC and it will be a part of the Game Pass.

This is the right move for them as they move toward a predominantly service based platform. It's basically an iteration of the Netflix model and something the gaming industry was inevitably moving towards.

One obvious thing to note is that Netflix is successful in part because it is available to anyone on just about any device. With this type of model/service Microsoft are going to want to expand their potential user base beyond the pool of 35 million x-box one/x owners + pc. The next most obvious step will be x-box services/games being playable on as many devices as possible. If I were to wager I'd bet good money on some sort of highly salable smart phone integration next.

When I first watched the video from Microsoft this afternoon, I thought they had labeled the video wrong or they were just 3 hour trials. Its nuts that they are adding those full games to the service. Though, if you look at it from Microsofts perspective, you are basically paying for those games anyways. $120 a year = those 3 games on sale at retail. The older games are just a bonus. Its a great way to get new people to try the service and kind of a thank you to those already enrolled. A win, win in my opinion.

Played the Sea of thieves beta on pc, was so boring. State of decay looks like nothing special, looking forward to Days Gone way more. Crackdown 3 is the only one of the three that might be interesting, but after the delay and lack of destruction shown, it could just be a better looking saints row

For those thinking they no longer have to keep their pre-order for a game they were looking forward to coming up... this does not dictate the titles will be on Game Pass for any specific amount of time. So though you will likely get at least a months time of free play from a new title it is not guaranteed that game will be on game pass for as long as the other titles that have already been included.

Though game pass does offer a percentage off of game titles when purchased. So that could make a big difference for those that have been thinking of pre-ordering a title.

For sure this is a win win situation for all gamers.

the second hand market for physical first party games is going to be seriously reduced as there won't be as many copies of these games around which in turn is going to attract more people to the service. As MS get no money from second hand games they are essentially increasing their revenue by attracting people who would usually just buy second hand.

Didn't really have a need for this prior to this announcement. I am a digital only everything, so I have several streaming subscriptions and this didn't meet priority. Yet, with new releases being added, will sign up the day sea of thieves comes out. Awesome move here by MS.
