A Message of Hope For Those Without the New Xbox One X

Chad from TXH writes: "All I’ve been reading about lately is the Xbox One X-or X.B.O.X.

I’m seeing it everywhere and it can’t be my fault. Even when I want to learn more about some games, it becomes mostly about how well the title plays on the new machine. If you too are feeling left out, then know that you aren’t alone."

No compelling exclusives so for me it's not needed.

Ceaser98573612351d ago

exactly elda, same here...

As of now I am happy with the OG xbox one, may shift to Xbox one S if i get a decent amount when i sell off the OG xbox one ... or may wait for a year or so and then may be get the X..

LastCenturyRob2350d ago

Probably should just wait on the X. The S is a great console but no reason to buy a console that won't have the most optimized games on it. MS has been aggressive with pricing to move the Xbox the past three years. I would think by summer there might be a first price drop for the X (about $50)... right around E3 when all the new games are announced. My opinion by Christmas next year the X will be $399 to $429. Still worth it for early adopters but if you can wait, get the X. Its pretty sweet.

No compelling exclusives describes PS4 perfectly, that's why we play XBOX.

Ricegum2350d ago

Lol at Skulls comment.

Come on buddy, let's be serious 😂

Skull5212350d ago

I suppose if you are into the 3rd person action quick time fest PlayStation is for you, that is all they offer.

LastCenturyRob2351d ago

Best exclusives out there as far as I'm considered. That and having so many new and older games enhanced is just icing on the cake.

Elda2350d ago (Edited 2350d ago )

That's great if one has ever been interested in XB,360 & XBO exclusives something I haven't.

LastCenturyRob2350d ago

It is great. If you actually tried some of those exclusives across all three platforms you would probably change your mind.

A computer, PS4, and Switch are all any gamer needs. All the games and need to buy a system that can't compete with my PC.

alb18992351d ago

I don't use computer for gaming and I'm a gamer too so, your style doesn't fit everyone.
I have a PS4 for the Exclusives, the switch for my kids (I play it too) and the X for third party.

ApexWolf222351d ago

Same here, I just picked up a PRO controller for the Switch yesterday. It's the kids console, but I sneak a play here and there as well lol, the pro controller feels just like an Xbox controller, so I feel right at home with it. I might pickup an extra dock or two soon to cut on moving it around the house.

TankCrossing2351d ago

OK stating the obvious here, but you seem to be struggling to grasp it: Not every gamer has "your PC".

The X is a great console for anyone that doesn't have a high-end PC connected to their TV.

ProjectVulcan2351d ago (Edited 2351d ago )

For the cost of the X1X hardware, the accessories you pretty much need to have (like an external HDD) plus an additional annual subscription for online gaming then you're still paying a lot out for a machine that only plays Xbox games. It's a lot to start up in a new ecosystem that will probably only be around 2-3 years before it is displaced as the fastest console and maybe even entirely replaced by a new Microsoft machine itself.

PC makes more sense because it plays most of those Xbox games, as well as PC games, as well as older games, emulated titles, and well....it's also a PC and will do everything they do very well.

The cost disparity really isn't that large for a lot of added benefits. Higher value.

TankCrossing2351d ago (Edited 2351d ago )

It's interesting as I had that very choice to make.

I have spent the last few years on a gaming PC connected to my TV. My watercooled R9-290Xs were beginning to show their age (mostly through memory capacity and poor crossfire support, but HDR support became crucial for me too). I decided I needed to upgrade my GPUs to really make the best of the TV.

I don't feel 4k30 is a valid target for a PC, it has got to be 60fps at least if you even occasionally use a mouse. So that meant my options were:
-a 1080TI, either pre-blocked (like the Aorus Waterforce cards), or blocked myself for ~£800
-2x Vega cards + blocks for a smidge more.
In either case, I'd probably want to upgrade again within about 3 years.

That's a lot more than £450, right? Keeping in mind I already have the rest of the high-end PC, it is still going to take more than a few years of Live and higher game prices to scratch that difference.

In the end I decided to sell up that PC and pick up a One X to tide me over for a year or two, by which point hopefully GPUs will be more reasonable and I can make a project of building a whole new PC.

As of right now, yes it is definitely possible to overpower the X. But it is hard to argue with the value of it. That kind of outlay isn't close to enough for the kind of PC that would trample it.

r2oB2350d ago

@ tank

I’m confused. You don’t feel 4k30 is a valid target for PC, so you traded in your PC for 4k30 gaming on a console? That doesn’t seem to make sense. Surely you could have just used your existing PC and gotten the same performance as the Xbox one X (4k30), and saved even more money for that future project.

Shadow0172350d ago

Tank.

You're telling me you sold your PC to play the exact same games on the Xbox one x. When you could of waited for a discount on a PC parts? I know you're argument isn't because 30 fps with mouse and keyboard when most if not all PC games are compatible with a controller.

TankCrossing2350d ago (Edited 2350d ago )

I find 30fps on a control pad can be OK with a little adjustment. 30fps on a keyboard and mouse never feels good, there is no adjusting.

My old PC quite frequently needed textures to be dialled down for that 4GB limit, and it relied on crossfire support. I could more-or-less cope with that for a while longer, but it was also incapable of HDR support. When you spend in excess of 2 grand on an OLED TV then not getting the most out of it is a bit of a deal-breaker, and those cards had to go one way or the other. That's what led to the upgrade or console decision.

You are right that I could have gone for a 1080 or Vega 56/64, and been content with 30fps and stuck with a control pad, or played the settings game to try and hit 60. That's not me though, my eyes were firmly fixated on the top tier and I doubt I would have been satisfied by anything else for long. I also considered that the other parts in my PC (an [email protected]) were still valuable for now, but would need upgrading before long.

It's worth noting I do still have a gaming PC so it's not like I'm missing out on anything, and honestly I'm enjoying the X so far. In a year or two I will build a badass watercooled PC with Navi or Volta, but the X will plug a gap until then.

My circumstances are very specific to me though. The X could be a much easier choice for people that don't have the rest of a PC built. It is a strong contender in terms of back for your buck.

ProjectVulcan2350d ago (Edited 2350d ago )

Selling two R9 290X cards would net at least £200 back towards a new GPU. Probably more like £250. Selling two R9 290X puts you halfway to a GTX1080 already, FAR less than setting up for a total new platform in Xbox One X.

A GTX1080ti is vastly more powerful than Xbox One X. It should be for what it costs. Just a GTX1070 alone comfortably bests Xbox One X. A factory overclocked RX580 is at least as fast.

The second problem with your argument TankCrossing is that you rejected 4K30 for PC but embraced less resolution and still 30FPS on console for £450, plus a decent sized HDD and Xbox Live every year. Xbox One X also isn't exactly swamped with native 4K games by all accounts, most employ dynamic resolution and end up averaging much less. It also isn't exactly bringing a long list of games that manage 1080/60 solidly either. A GTX1070 can typically do 2560 x 1440 and 60FPS. Xbox One X can barely do 60FPS at 1080p it seems on most games that offer that mode.

Considering this PC is indeed better value. If you're dropping the best part of £550-600 on an Xbox One X just to get started then you may as well add a bit more to it and go with the PC. Despite the higher initial outlay it'll be cheaper to run without those subs and with cheaper games. It offers far more gaming value.

It's actually very easy to justify a gaming PC when Xbox One X is such an expensive console. I can understand the gap between spending £200 on a games console and forking out £600 for a functioning gaming PC but not so much a £550-£600 console all in and let's say for example an £800-£900 PC. At £200 you're on a budget. At £550-£600 for a games console which is essentially just a toy you're in luxury territory.

PC wins that battle easily.

TankCrossing2350d ago

I'm not arguing anything, I'm explaining the decision i made as it runs contrary to what you said, and contrary to the initial comment that no gamer would need an X. Long story short, the X is good for the price.

FWIW, I got £160 for each 290. I didn't (and don't) feel now is a great time to buy GPUs, but it sure is a good time to sell 'em lol.

Who are you to say what gaming setup is "all any gamer needs"? I don't like PC and I favor xbox over any other console. I own a Pro and a switch and a PC with a 7950 gpu so I'm living proof that your so called facts are wrong.

yeahright22350d ago

Semantics really, in todays gaming space, xbox isn't needed to play any new games. multiplats are obviously available elsewhere and since xbox put all their exclusives on PC, there's no true need for an xbox. You're talking more personal preference. And that's entirely valid, but unless you're talking about an old one off like sunset overdrive, you don't really need an xbox today to access any games. but like I said, just semantics, we're talking about luxury items after all.

2350d ago
LastCenturyRob2350d ago

apparently according to pretty much every dev out there the X is doing exactly that. Not just competing but matching most gaming rigs....Sorry you wasted your money on your "super awesome" pc...Oh well.

Tazzy2350d ago

As a console gamer only I learned alot from my brother about PC gaming and games do blow console away a
PC gamer that has a good rig isn't worried about getting an Xbox One X. A PC gamer can play Xbox games and third party games with better settings and some are playing in 8k or higher Switch and Playstation games aren't on PC so a PC gamers buys their consoles. (You can correct me if I'm wrong)
