I think it was a little of everything.I was at my local GS earlier and i must have seen at least 10+ returning the game.

Now if we could all rally against all other games to get rid of lootcrates completely

Depending on what happens within the next few hours.I will gladly give them $60 for it tomorrow.

Agreed, but I’m curious if Dice will attempt to somehow rework the mechanics of the game, or if it’ll just remain the exact same grind but without the ability to purchase content previously behind the pay wall. Either way a step in the right direction if true.

Cosmetic loot boxes are fine. The way overwatch and titan fall handles it works great. That money makes it so new maps are free for everyone instead of having season passes or map packs.

I agree we can dictate a lot that these big publishers do. While I'm not against publishers making extra money from games consumers have purchased, it has to be done right. DLC that adds to a game and isn't locked on the disc that has already been purchased, I'm ok paying for. But paying to strengthen your character or something along those lines is grimey.

Microtransactions will be back, but you all have no idea what form that will they will take.

I know gamers love being outraged, but can we just take the win and stop hating everything preemptively too?

Accept the fact that there isn't a developer or publisher that's going to give you a game with free DLC and not want to make some additional money.

The game is being reworked. You can't just rip out MTs and expect the progression to be fine. EA is actually doing the right thing here. They are removing MTs until they can fix the overall system to make it less greedy and grindy. This is the right move.

Temporarily removing microtransactions is an interesting turn of events but far from any real victory for the gaming consumer public. EA is trying to figure out how they can navigate these waters. Most game publishing companies make the significant portion of the sales revenue at release. So by removing the MT's they hope to quell the concerns people may have upon release and draw everyone in.

Ever heard the saying "come into my den said the spider to the fly".

Now if EA permanently removed progression based MT's and timed mechanics in SP similar to f2p games then perhaps many would consider purchasing. But everyone is keyed in on the verbiage "temporarily removing". At best this is a wait and see but surely no day 1 purchase.

I say you should still avoid this game. EA is backtracking, yes, but the next game will just have a more subtle and clever way of doing the same thing.

If everyone goes out and buys the game now, all EA learned was where the red line was, and they will back off just enough to keep bending over gamers.

Yeah, I'm not buying their bullshit either way. They just want those day one buyers for the books and then they'll patch that shit in once the dust settles.

They don't deserve Star Wars. Hopefully sales on all of EA's Star Wars games decline enough to where they won't keep paying for the license and someone else who will respect it can start making real games in that universe.

Only temporarily.. for all we know, they could quite easily put them back in with minor adjustments. Hate to be that negative person but they already did the whole PR "we're listening" after the beta backlash and did very little to change things back then.

It's still encouraging and a huge step in the right direction but it still doesn't change the fact the game still contains one of the worst progression systems in a modern online FPS. Spend 20 hours playing x class only to potentially get upgrades for y class.. who at Dice seriously thought this was a good idea?

I think DICE is taking this ultra seriously. They are fed up now that they have launched 2 Battlefronts in a row with bad reviews. I am sure EA is breathing down their necks that they are screwing up what was gonna be their biggest IP, and at the same time DICE actually does want this to be a good game.

Furthermore it's clear from previous interviews that DICE was planning on bringing this business model to Battlefield 2018. But now that this has happened they probably aren't sure about what they should do, and they know they only have like 6 months of tinkering to figure out the ideal system for their next game.

I will get hate but they didn’t have to do that. They need to separate them from star cards and progression. They can offer cool cosmetics etc. Because I know that the next move will be to stop making these games. I’d prefer something like AC Origins or Overwatch. I hate micros and I’d love to see an industry wide removal, but now we will see paid dlc again etc. I’d rather just have the option to change outfits and decide how much i like the game. If I spend $60 and find I play it for 200+ hrs, I will gladly spend money to support them more. But it needs to be our choice.

Or add in game cosmetic items that can also be purchased. Leave loot boxes to random gifts or something.

Well, surely EA can. They know that they implement the same exact system in a few months and it will be all old news. This is a PR stunt, a bad one, as only idiots felt for it, but there are too many people warning gamers about it.

The problem is: this is just one move in a very carefully planned strategy. Hopefully the pressure can push through IGN and Gamespot defending EA in the next days.

It is a major strike through their "make the outrage outdated" strategy, but the pressure is still going strong. Let's hope we can still screw EA's christmas, then we are good. :D

it's pretty likely they'll tweak progression first.

It's important to note that a prime reason this game, Dice, and EA got raked through the coals to a viral degree...was that most of the progression in the game was randomized...not just time consuming, and not just that MT's allowed competitive advantage. Those are bad on their own, but without any 'path of persistence'...they're unforgiveable.

BF4 had mt's, and allowed players to buy crates, or even pay to unlock abilities for classes and vehicles...but, importantly, the way you 'naturally' unlock said abilities was straight forward. You didn't have to use xp to buy a crate to maybe drive a tank, or maybe gain access to a certain type of ability. You had a relatively easy path to unlock said stuff without wasted time in random things you didn't want to use. BF4 was a disaster for other reasons, but this would not have had nearly the fallout if it was handled in a less aggressive way...imo, at least...

but who am I? I haven't purchased a DICE, or EA entirely, product/service since BF4 to begin with...so I can't really complain, as I pulled the plug on their transparent BS years ago...

EA isn't likely to wait months to bring something else in. I'd say within two weeks of launch max. The prime time for making money off MT is right on launch, and they won't give up money so easily.

It won't take long to see what they change. A bit of patience will show what EA intends to do. I wouldn't expect them at this point to know exactly what they may do, or be able to offer up a time frame, because they may not know for sure, but surely, we'll know something soon enough.

It's quite rare for games to get re-reviewed. This gen, the only time I recall that happening was with DC, where they lowered initial reviews due to the launch problems, but never went back and redid them once it was fixed.

Anyhow, I don't see why EA should get this benefit for already published reviews. So long as the reviews state why they gave the score they did, then it's fair game. An update to said review can inform new readers that the problem has been temporarily addressed.

Personally, I don't see a reason to re-review anyways until we know what EA is going to do when they re-implement their MT system.

Don't have to be genius to figure that out now do you, there is no season pass, those expansions are free, of course they have to make money somehow. They are a business after all.

For over a decade we had this whole DLC system, and people still cannot get it into their heads, that of course businesses do things that gives them profit, be it twisted "Pay-to-Win" micros, or season passes/expansions.
If you people still think that everything is free these days, I don't know what kind of fantasy world you live in.

In my opinion, then it's high time that IF they aren't making enough money (and I highly doubt it), then they should raise the price of the game and included ALL future DLC for free.

If it's cosmetics, make them ree unlockables as an apology for trying to make us out to be gullible money monkeys. Go back to old school gaming where costumes were rewards and full, worthy expansions were DLC.

The laziness of selling cosmetics for cash is absurd. Modders can make new attires and such in a matter of hours. Make them work for our money, instead of allowing them to use us.

This was a major story even outside of the gaming community. I honestly don't think even EA is that stupid to try this again. They tried something shady and it backfired horribly. They will sell cosmetic items like all the other games and it will be fine, that is the only smart choice they have. They have the Star Wars IP to use which is a licence to print money. Even games like Uncharted have MT's, they are not going away. I do not like MT's but if companies want to use them for cosmetic items that do not have any effect on game play and offer free DLC like this game is going to do I am fine with it. You are going to have to be too or you will have to find a new hobby. The prices of games have been the same for many years but costs to make them have exploded. Something has to give it's either MT for cosmetic stuff or higher game prices. EA's problem is they made a very poor decision about having it effect game play which they can fix. We will see what happens. I am going to buy the game and against my better judgment give them a chance to make it right. They fail I am done and I think many others will be too and they know it.

I always like it when things we've griped about for years make mainstream news. So long as such things represent what we actually gripe about, and don't just make gamers look like petty entitled imbeciles.

While most of the time it's not something that changes much, it's always nice to let more people see there is a lot more going on with the consumer side of things than they may be aware, and any chance to make people think about it, is another chance to bring more people in that won't accept bad consumer policies.

It really becomes a serious problem for companies when they have to explain the problems at investor meetings. For the most part, they don't get involved in the day to day operations of any one individual product, or even really worry too often about negative controversy until it really gets big.

The fact that the investment firm actually saw potential risks is a serious problem for EA if they can't explain it away and calm investors, because it could cause their stock to go down pretty quickly. While it's unlikely to shut the company down, it takes time to build that back up, and in the case of this being the catalyst for it going down, many investment recommendations would be put on hold until actual revenue came back about how this controversy affected sales. Ultimately, this isn't something EA would likely want to disclose specifically in a public manner, which they would have had to, because it could undo the decade or so of them bullshitting the community in their constant efforts to justify their practices.

On top of that, it would show a lot of statistics publicly which can easily be extrapolated across the entire industry, which actually would cause a big investment bubble to bust as these MT revenues have been grossly over-inflated by not showing all the details. What it's coming down to, really, is that despite there being plenty of MT revenue, it isn't actually something that is unobtainable through just making a good game, or at least marketing a game properly. This whole MT pull in such significant revenue, and are required for games to be made is one of the biggest lies perpetuated upon the consumer(and investors), by the industry that eventually it's going to come back and bite them in the ass.

Now get rid of loot crates entirely and make a better system something where we actually know what were buying rather then gambling for. Just make cosmetics directly purchasable with money or have a reasonable in game price tag attached like 50k credits.

That way people that don't have the time to grind for that cosmetic item can just buy it directly no loot crate junk. Adopt the system that rainbow six siege used. If were going to spend our hard earned money then I want to buy the items I want directly not gamble for them.

As much as the loot box stuff is rubbish, we can't have no season pass and no micro transactions. Games do cost more to make now, and I think Battlefront has been put in a awkward corner. The last game was really bad when it came to core content and the Season pass did feel like EA was just giving us the full game once the full DLC was out.

As much as we don't want it, we as buyers do need to pay more. I'm not a fan of "random" drops.

I think WB had it done well with Injustice 2. A season pass, so if you want new guys you can get them and a micro transaction system that is purely skin based. The shader system is fair overall. I've probably paid £10 in the in game currency to buy currency to buy skin shaders. I didn't feel bad doing it.

Random loot is just not appealing to me. I'd rather they just offer things at a price and you're guaranteed to get it.

Games cost more to make but the rise in digital without discount and massively increased sales potential factor in as well. The last game sold something like 27 mil copies. This game would be a thousand times better if not for the rng and p2w systems. Fix that and sales of the game alone can cover all the extra content without diminishing profits. The problem is that shareholders and CEOs tend to think they're just leaving money on the table without all the rng, p2w crap. Its a state of mind fallacy and modern corporations seem to lack the proper capitalist instincts to see through it.

I'm really tired of this. It's only "temporary" meaning it'll come back in either full force or in a less conspicuous way. whether it's to get around the Belgium gambling investigation, please Wall Street, and the consumer -- it's all temporary.

The only way to be successful against EA and any other company using such practices (Like Activision or Ubisoft or the makers of Shadow of War) is to remain firm on the stance that loot boxes and microtransactions are bad for the gaming community. Whether it's cosmetic or not.

One bad apple spoils the bunch and we've had a LOT of bad apples recently. and complacency and stupidity.

-I've been silently coasting and reading all the reviews and watching the videos, enough people HAVE voiced their opinion and stated they'll further voice it by voting with their wallets -- but don't let EA (or any other company's) TEMPORARY trickery deceive or lull you into relaxing the proper stance on evil practices. And I'm tired too, so I spoke up and threw my 2 cents in (Not to EA) as every "armchair developer" and ant matters.

Too late, you know I was interested in B2, but seeing how and what you had to buy/do in the game, they can take this game and shove it. No more will I buy EA titles, not after this.

You have to work your ass off in game to unlock these charactors, and the minimum credits you get after each game is around 275 and 1 to 3 hours long.. The highest credits you "had" to save up for was 60,000, and can you earn as many credits as you want? NO! Apparently there "was" a cap for each day. Guys if you were looking foreward into gettting this game, please don't get it, teach EA a lesson. Go and spend your hard earned money on a game that's from a company that respects you and just doesn't look at you and see dollar signs.

Here is a rundown of what's currently going on in Hell, aka EA's headquarters:
Microtransactions are going to be reintroduced, that is a GIVEN. Right now, there are two options on the table:
1.) Micro-transactions will be cosmetic ONLY. This is the less popular option, and really the only way this option will be implemented is if community outcry is both loud enough and sustained. If they CAN get away with it, they'll try like hell to.
2.) Microtransactions will be used to purchase specific star card and cosmetic packages/bundles. This is so that technically the gambling aspect is removed from multiplayer (as a side note, available for purchase will be "boost" packages, i.e. boosts in XP/credits. This is coming no matter what, this was determined way before BFII's launch or the controversy).
Worth mentioning is the fact that EA/Disney did not change because their "morals" compelled them to. It was pure community backlash (Reddit, news articles, etc.). NOTHING is set in stone YET. This is a PR stunt, they will see whether or not the controversy dies down, and if it does, option #2 is coming, and this time, it will take heaven, hell, and New Jersey to make them change the new system. So, KEEP ON FIGHTING. I'm talking Youtube videos, posts on forums and Reddit, Twitter hashtags, PSA's on Facebook, the whole 9 yards. Disney only made EA give their statement because it was right before Christmas AND right before The Last Jedi release. Bad Star Wars press of any kind=less ticket sales=pissed off Mouse House. As soon as TLJ and the Christmas season are under way, expect EA to reintroduce micro-transaction that will, once again, greatly affect multiplayer negatively UNLESS we continue to demand the game we were promised! Keep up the fight! The future of Battlefront II LITERALLY depends on it!

While I do think that is the case 99% of the time when people complain, although there are times when there are smaller victories in those times as well, it is nice when the community bands together and actually achieves something.

Although, in this case, I am a bit more cautious about what was actually achieved due to the temporary nature of it all, but at least it's a start.

Anyhow, when big things do change because of community outcry, it shows that actual change can happen when people band together to express their concern, and why it's not a good thing for the consumer to just accept whatever a company will give them because it's deemed inevitable.

The final straw on the camel’s back though may have been the revelation that Star Wars Battlefront 2‘s loot boxes are under investigation by the Belgian gambling authority. Belgium’s Gambling Commission has suggested that EA could be subject to thousands of dollars worth of fines, or an outright ban of the game could be on the cards.

EA is a license holder for the Star Wars brand and has been allowed by Disney to make games based on its universe, but EA also has a duty to uphold the values of the sci-fi franchise. It’s understandable that Disney would step in to ensure that its brand is protected and that EA is making business decisions that do not tarnish the Star Wars name.

I think it was more because their stock had a serious threat to be downgraded by analyst, because the outcry had grown large enough to bring into question if they would make as much money as would originally be predicted. Basically, it's an example where the threat of a boycott translated to real concern among investors that their investment may not be worth as much as they originally thought, which drives stock prices down.

While EA will say it's because they're listening to the community, the rather sudden investor meeting they had to have to address the investors concerns over the extremely public reaction was more of a catalyst than any real concern that EA had over placating the customer.

It was the community that caused this though, so it's not like the community didn't do something productive.

I think it'd be a great fallacy to assume that Disney wasn't on board with every design decision put into this game. They wouldn't just allow EA to do whatever they want, and Disney would be getting a cut of all revenues on the game, so they'd be fine with making more through MT.

I'm not loving that these crystals microtransactions could come back (at a later date). "When it's Changed?" What does that mean? If the (crystals multiplayer pay-to-win) system comes back later... that's a game killer!

Looks like the in game (progression system) could still be screwed up. I don't like 'grinding' to slowly advance in the game. If I can't advance normally like in other games… that could be a game killer. I won't spend hundreds or thousands of hours in a game to sloooooowly rank up my player.

The information about how Multiplayer works has been very lacking. There's been almost NO info on how MP works! I want solid MP Tactical TEAMWORK with MY friends. The more in game friends as possible. If it's only 6 vs 6 in a PvP system with bad netcode, Game LAG or other online game breaking MP problems… that will be a game killer also. I won't play another game that takes 30+ bullets just to kill an enemy!! Or 3 grenades to kill one guy!

Outstanding in game player communications is a must. I want to talk to MY friends… not listen to dozens of screaming kids all talking at once. If "IN GAME" Teamwork communications is broken… that's a game killer. We won't depend on the PS4's Party Chat system to talk to each other. Last time we did that… we had to choose between Game Sounds… or Party Chat Voice sound… NOT BOTH!! Battlefield 3 had a GREAT in game player communications system.

I'll let OTHERS buy the game first and see what the players like or hate about it and THEN buy it or not.

We "made" EA(Disney?) listen to us! Our outrage on the internet on these Microtransaction issues was a game changer. Other game developers will carefully notice this! As customers and players... we have a voice together that has impact.

I call BS, I do not trust this from EA. It looks more a measure to gt us to forget and more of a "disabled" feature that will only come back AFTER sales are where they want them to be.

That should not be the case because folks should cut this off at the pass and just not mess with EA's foolishness. Screw you EA.

We need to keep up the pressure until they get rid of micro transaction and loot boxes.

I'll gladly purchase the game for 60 dollars and get every good DLC for 20 to 30 dollars. But that depends on EA behalf.
At this point I'll hold my dollars until this is finally sorted out.

Well you know what this is ? This is them openly calling us morons. People will say "THEY LISTENED" and the negative talk will stop, even if a lot of people dont change their mind and buy it , it will stop a lot of the negative buzz and negative articles and negative reviews citing it....

Its basically like a slob cleaning up for a date and once you go steady they are back to their old stench and mess.

Due to the nature of some loot boxes in games that contain random items a few countries have cataloged this like gambling and needs to be taxed :) it's true and maybe it has something to do with it.

Yup, it’s true. If you pay real money for something and you don’t know what you are getting, it falls under the law of gambling, and you have to be an adult to gamble in certain countries.

Wasn't the fact that the devs said all doc content would be free in star wars bf2 and that is one reason why are justifying or trying to justify the micro T's in the game which I still think is a very cheap excuse to use considering loot boxes are generating much more money than dlc charges.

The greed needs to stop and devs just need to take it back where it was buy a season pass and all content created was yours, it should still be that way now.

Screw loot boxes and micro T's. If star wars completely gets rid of them good on them but then what, will they reintroduce the season pass or just have seperate dlc packs to buy. I spose though as long as devs are not trying to do all the monetization option at once that's something at least but that's what has been happening this gen and it's absurd.

The only microtransactions I can sort of get on board with are cosmetic and silly additions that doesnt affect the real content, balance and playability, like special outfits and emotes maybe. you know. 2 bucks for vaders helmet or jar jar character skin. that would be fine or custom laser colors. this is shite.
