Why Aren’t Developers Making Games For The Nintendo Switch?

Shaz Mohsin says: "Now, I completely get Nintendo being rigid with the content their system has; but if you don’t loosen the entry gates a little bit, then you’re going to end up with nothing, and content is definitely not the area Nintendo can be too picky on."

I'm more interested in why people keep using the phrase "selling like hot cakes"

GameBoyColor2519d ago

Cuz it is. Even if stock is limited, everytime they become available they are gone instantly. The demend is there.

LOL_WUT2519d ago

They always do that even with the Wii U yet it never works out the way they planned. I barely managed to get a hold of one from Gamestop ;)

ABizzel12519d ago

AAA
1. "AAA games" generally speaking need demanding hardware, proven online experiences, etc... therefore AAA games will not be making their way to Switch.

Indies & A-tier developers
2. Nintendo has restrictions on what can and can't be uploaded to their platform, and on top of that it cost significantly more to produce games on their cartridges than on a Blu Ray disc. So games that would be considered A-tier have to run the risk of losing their investment even if the game meets goal, because they took a lost on cartridges. Indies have to jump through too many hoops just to get their game cleared.

The device isn't powerful enough to run AAA-games. A-tier developers are generally spread thin, don't have huge budgets, and the risk/reward is slim on Nintendo platforms for 3rd parties on top of a higher cost media format. Indies having too many rules and regulations to get their games up and clear for eShop.

Altogether shows why games are lacking on Switch right now.

Great platform as a handheld, but it lacks the power needed for 3rd party and Nintendo business always hold themselves back.

Imalwaysright2519d ago

@ ABizzel1

AAA games are games made by big studios with a significant budget not only for developing them but for their marketing as well. Power of the device they're being made for has nothing to do with a game being AAA or not. Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart are very much AAA games.

bouzebbal2519d ago

Buy an overpriced console with no multi media function with no exclusive or 3rd party game worth it is staggering. No matter how good it is to use a console with no games will never be worth buying.
But the fanboys will tell you wait for e3.
Let's wait then...

davand1142519d ago

But do hot cakes even sell that well?

DivineAssault 2519d ago

The switch is selling out fast but nintendo has to be careful not to overstock.. They arent stupid and wont risk losing money by making it too accessible but theyll meet the demands eventually

2519d ago
PurpHerbison2518d ago

Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart are WiiU PORTS. They shouldn't be included in the AAA argument. We are talking about potential NEW AAA games, not ports from an even weaker system.

DarXyde2518d ago (Edited 2518d ago )

ABizzel1,

I imagine AAA titles will make their way to Switch. Early support will likely come from Ubisoft and Bethesda and, should they succeed, we'll see more support. Japanese support is a given; it's relatively simple to port games from PC or PS4 to Switch and Japanese gamers love mobility. Seems like a good start.

As for Indies and A- tier developers, naturally, restrictions apply to content. The cartridges likely cost more because they're proprietary, but PSP saw pretty decent success, as did DS and 3DS. Smaller developers were still able to put out niche games on Vita, even if limited. We don't know the nature of these deals; for all we know, since developers would need to buy the cartridges from Nintendo (being proprietary and all) who's to say they don't waive publishing costs for physics titles?

You mention the power holding it back, but I think that depends on context. As I mentioned, it looks like Switch will gain great Japanese support. If not much else, those games will be present on Switch. We're seeing something of a Japanese renaissance and those games don't really push the hardware. We may sacrifice resolution and/or frame rate, but you also may not. Persona 5 doesn't push the PS4, for instance, yet it's arguably the best game released this year (current game of the generation in my opinion). I don't know how hard DQ11 pushes PS4, but it's also got a Switch version confirmed. For western games that focus on power, sure, Switch is at a disadvantage there. Otherwise, I don't really think so.

wannabe gamer2518d ago

Nintendo systems don't even sell cause they are good anymore. they sell cause they are the hot item to have and see beside someone's tv but they have been collecting dust since the wii. they are expensive paperweights after 1-3 months of purchase. nintendo needs to quit making weak underpowered hardware as a cost saving measure and actually try to do something worth while for once.

indysurfn2518d ago (Edited 2518d ago )

How does this site go from saying SWITCH lets too many indie games on SWITCH to: it is too tight on what they let on the system? Contradict yourselves much?

CLICK BAIT !

DarkZane2518d ago

Every consoles sell well at the beginning. Both the PS4 and Xbox One had better launches than the switch and both were selling out their stock quickly once new shipments came in (especially the PS4).

However that doesn't matter if you can't keep that up when stock isn't a problem anymore. We'll find out if the Switch is really selling well once stock isn't an issue anymore. The Wii U was doing pretty well at first too, but there was a lot of stock, the sales slowed to almost nothing and the console flopped.

I'm pretty certain the demand for hot cakes are never so strong that they've been the epitome of demand that warrants the phrase

You can look here at number 9 as to the best guess:

It is interesting how turns of phrase like this are born, and doubly so when we can only speculate as to their true origin, or why they became popular to begin with.

I've also had VERY good Cold cakes. I think I prefer COLD cakes

JayEscobar2519d ago

Developers are making games for Switch though. More have been announced just over the past few days....or "leaked".

Wait for E3. This article shouldn't exist before E3 anyways, as no developer is really going to fully announce their Switch game developments before the 3 days dedicated to those reveals.

It's like people complaining in November why they haven't received their Christmas gifts yet.

New Switch games are getting announced pretty much every day. Bigger third parties haven't jumped on yet, but it's clear they're waiting a few months to see if sales die down.

LOL_WUT2519d ago

Usually it means AAA 3rd party support no ones going to write an article for not getting support from small indie devs ;)

Thatguy-3102519d ago

Only Nintendo games sale on Nintendo platforms. I highly doubt you'll be seeing huge third party titles

objdadon2519d ago

"Only Nintendo games sale on Nintendo platforms. I highly doubt you'll be seeing huge third party titles"

If that's the case then there's no way in hell the switch will get anywhere near wii sales so many are boldly predicting. I love my switch but not having big 3rd party games will inevitably seal its fate.

admiralvic2519d ago

"If that's the case then there's no way in hell the switch will get anywhere near wii sales so many are boldly predicting. "

Two things.

1) People project based off what figures indicate and people are interested in. Currently it is selling better than the Wii and track to achieve that level of sales. Based off the data it isn't impossible to believe, but only time will tell.
2) The Wii got there being cheap and generally lacking huge third party titles. You couldn't play Dead Space (minus Extraction or whatever), BioShock, Dead Rising 2 or later (Dead Rising on there is also better left forgotten...), Skyrim, GTA, Street Fighter IV, BlazBlue and countless others and it did fine. While the cost hurts the system, the ability to play things like Skyrim on the go is a huge perk for many.

"I love my switch but not having big 3rd party games will inevitably seal its fate."

It will have less sales (more content can't possibly decrease sales), but how much of an impact it makes is up in the air. However, games that are resource heavy or have a lot of online content, are likely to sell bad on the Switch anyway. As nice as portability is, people typically buy games to play with friends and with an established network, so even if Destiny could run on the Switch, I assume it would easily be the least popular. The same holds true for performance. Dead Rising gets a lot of flack for how poorly it ran on the Wii and it stands to reason people will pick better hardware over portability if hardware is a significant factor.

wonderfulmonkeyman2519d ago

Monster Hunter says hi. As does Dragon Quest and plenty of others.

LordJamar2519d ago

doubt it. the switch is gonna be wii u all over again

Segata2519d ago

It's out tracking Wii sales. It sold more in it's first month than Wii U did in it's first year. Already has more support from 3rd party devs than Wii U did in all 5 years in Switchs first year alone. It has a modern and efficient chip set. An API that isn't GX but Vulkan & OpenGL 4.5. Native UE4 support and really easy to get UE4 games running on it. 20 UE4 Japanese games coming to it. nearly 200 games listed on Wikipedia. Aggressive marketing. Clear communication about the product to the customer. In no way at all is this like Wii U.

LordJamar2519d ago

@segata 100% disagree with you

yomfweeee2518d ago

Segata Switch sales have been very similar to WiiU. WiiU had sold over 3 million by end of 2012. That was 6 weeks in America and about 4 in Europe. Less than 4 in Japan. Wasn't even release in some regions by then.

Switch had a worldwide release on March 3rd and was at 2.74 million after 4 weeks.

So, it really isn't impressive. It was spurred by Zelda, which many people waited years for.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory2519d ago

You mean why are Western Developers aren't making games for the Switch? Well that don't like portable.

https://www.gamespot.com/ar...

http://www.ign.com/articles...

Nothing to do with west or east.

We've talked about this before bud.

Resident Evil 5 and 6, MGS4-5, FFX, FFXII FFXV, FFXIII etc all skipped Nintendo platforms.

Please stop trying to spread misinformation. At this point, you know its not true as I've linked those sources to you before.

This isn't about west or east, its simply about the lack of AAA SUPPORT!

ie you won't see many of those companies BIG series on that platform as historically never saw them on those platforms after the introduction of the Playstation.

Heck, Tekken, FF, MGS, RE etc have more of a home on XB then they do a Nintendo system.

BOTH West and EAST are not making AAA games for Switch, but both clearly didn't support Wii U.

mean...MGSV can work on Wii U and it was skipped.

RE5 and 6 and Revelations 2 and 2002 and Zero Remaster all could work on Wii U and SKIPPED

THUS it has NOTHING to do with West vs East.

You don't see FFXV coming to Switch just like you don't see Destiny 2.

Its just too weak.

Stop trying to paint it as if its west vs east when BOTH are not bringing AAA titles and many are even confirming this right out of the gate.

C_Ali882519d ago (Edited 2519d ago )

We are talking about the Switch and the Switch only!! Not consoles that are dead and gone, and if we are talking about the Switch then it needs to be said that, Koei, Capcom, Level 5, SE, EA, 2k, Ubisoft, WB games, Mojang, Bandai Namco, Sega, Atlus, are all developing for Switch... Your comment holds very little ACTUAL information pertaining to the Switch. In fact this article ignores scores of third party games to argue an invalid point, such as you have done here!

wolokowoh2519d ago

While I'll agree with the main point, your supporting evidence is very weak. RE5 came out well before Wii U. RE6 was released a month before. So both would have been ports to a low selling console that had too many ports as it was. You conveniently left out RE4 because you knew it was on GameCube first and came to Wii. If you're bring FFX into this, RE4 is fair game for a counter argument. MGS4 also didn't come to Xbox 360 which was available well before release and at the time the better selling out of the PS3 and 360. MGSV came out after PS4 launched and the Wii U was already deemed a failure so a port of any kind wouldn't sell. Sure there's the PS3 version but that sold like crap in comparison on console with 80+ million. As you you pointed out, FFXV on what console. Nintendo doesn't have one that run it in its current state. They had trouble optimizing the PS4 version. FF13 came out well before the Wii U so again it would just be a port. FFX is fair because they could have ported to Wii like RE4 did. This especially true because Wii was successful for JRPGs but then you would have to concede all the handheld support and the Dragon Quest on Wii, etc over the years if we're going back that far. Also Xbox doesn't have FFX Remaster either. FF12 same. The sequel to FF12 was a DS or 3DS game. Also again this ignore Square support of DS/3DS and most likely future support of Switch.

What it comes down to is Nintendo has given developers reasons not to work with them. Since Wii they have underpowered hardware for a home console making it hard for anything but ports of older games and completely original games to flourish. New IP are fairly rare so that just leaves ports.

_-EDMIX-_2519d ago (Edited 2519d ago )

@C_A- those consoles are still relevant because they show there is a history of these companies not supporting platforms that have either limitations or are unable to sell their properties.

Yes those companies are working on the switch but a lot of those companies have also confirmed titles that won't even show up on the switch.

Capcom has stated Resident Evil will not appear on the switch but technically they've had this stance for Nintendo platforms since 2013 if you actually look up those releases.

Square Enix has just stated Final Fantasy 15 is not coming to the switch which only further confirms that this is the situation comparable to the previous systems.

I mean the Assassins Creed game based on the leaks is not coming to the switch which once again confirms this is a situation comparable to those previous systems where they were too weak.

I mean consider you never got Assassin's Creed Unity or Syndicate on the Wii U.

If you ever want to see what a company is likely to do in the future simply look at what they've done in the past.
There is a pattern in the history of these companies not supporting a Nintendo platform if it's too weak actually regardless of its sales.

Wii

@wolo-Resident Evil 5 and 6 were also re-released on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in completely skipped the Wii U in fact Revelations 2 and 2002 and Resident Evil Zero were also remastered and never appeared on the Wii U.

The very first Revelations game is being re-released on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and it doesn't have a switch version.

To my understanding capcom's comments were Resident Evils were not coming to the switch they stated nothing about Resident Evil 7 which actually means they don't mean a single particular title it sounds like they mean the series in general but this simply support an idea that they've been doing since 2013 where Nintendo systems have been being skipped for Resident Evil re-releases and normal releases.

Final Fantasy 10 and Final Fantasy 12 are also being re-released that are not appearing on Nintendo platforms so please stop using the releases of The Originals as justification for them not appearing on Nintendo systems because for the most part that doesn't explain why they are not being re-released on Nintendo systems.... I mean Dream Drop Distance was completely remade in 3D for PlayStation 4 and completely skipped the Wii U or switch despite the original game existing on 3DS.

Facts

That it's not a subjective idea
that is not an opinion
that is not my personal view

that is something that is objective, it is a fact you can look up yourself.

Fist4achin2519d ago

Nintendo will start to throw some serious money around like they did for the ds and 3ds. Already we see another iteration of Monster Hunster only being released on the switch. That will definitely bolster their Japan sales. Then we will see a persona, FF, DQ, Bayonetta, No more heroes, etc... roll out exclusive to the switch. It may look like a slow start, but they know what sells and will either bring it, or pay to bring it. Despite their failures, they still have deep pockets.

Like you said, nothing to do with the east vs west.

DashMad2518d ago

Monster hunter, some of niche PSvita JRPG dev also jump ship to the switch already game like Disgaea 5, fate, tohou even koei tecmo delay night of azure 2 to release on switch, it got dragon quest and i bet it sold more in switch than PS4. SMT from atlus, tales of game. PS4 just isn't healthy enough for japanese market that flagship IP like FFXV barely sold 1 million that huge drop from FFXIII and majority of it's game bomba in japan, hell i predicted switch will outsold PS4 LTD in just 15 month in japan or in a year if they can get their stock problem solved.

Thatguy-3102519d ago

Third party support from big publishers was always present for those two systems tho.

Vegamyster2519d ago

They also launched right before the holiday season which is when a large number of popular games come out, not at the start of March, even the Wii-U's launch had a fairly significant amount of 3rd party games although some of them were older. If no new games are announced at E3 for the Fall then it probably won't have much support from big franchises, we won't really know until then.

_-EDMIX-_2519d ago

porkChop2519d ago

Dude, I got my PS4 right after launch. Outside of the big AAA mega franchises, the want much for the first year and a half. Things were pretty sparse for the XBO as well.

I mean do you really not remember everyone dubbing PS4 the "IndieStation 4"? It's a great system, don't get me wrong. I love my PS4. But I'm not going to pretend that the first year or two didn't suck.

Every new platform is like that, and always have been in my near-25 years of gaming.

_-EDMIX-_2519d ago (Edited 2519d ago )

@Pork-

PS4 and XONE launched with Battlefield 4, Call Of Duty Ghost, Need For Speed, ACIV and many other AAA games.

LAUNCHED with those games.

Switch is not getting Call Of Duty (not day and date anyway if ever) Destiny 2, Battlefront 2, Prey, Shadow Of War, AC Origins, Far Cry 5 etc.

If PS4 and XONE can get a bunch of cross gen games, why is Switch not getting this treatment?

"Every new platform is like that"

LOL

Every new platforms doesn't launch with BF, COD, NFS etc?

You sure?

Buddy...the same games that LAUNCHED on PS4 and XONE are NOT COMING TO SWITCH AT ALL, that isn't a "first year " issue, that is a its not coming to the system issue.

We didn't just get PS4 and XONE and then have to wait years for Battlefield 4, Call Of Duty Ghost, Need For Speed, ACIV etc so why are you assuming it makes sense for Switch users to wait for games series PS and XB owners got at launch?

letsa_go2519d ago

@porkChop The Nintendo 64 game drought was the WORST! That actually got me out of gaming until the dreamcast. I should've got the PS1. haha

porkChop2519d ago (Edited 2519d ago )

Alright, Edmix. Clearly reading isn't your strong suit.

What I said:
"Outside of the big AAA mega franchises, there wasn't much for the first year and a half."

What you said:
"PS4 and XONE launched with Battlefield 4, Call Of Duty Ghost, Need For Speed, ACIV and many other AAA games."

I said that the PS4/XBO didn't have much in the first year *outside* of the big AAA franchises. So you proceed to bring up how they launched with the big AAA franchises. Good job, bud.

No shit they had the big games, but outside of those big games there was nothing but Indies. The libraries were sparse in the first year aside from the usual big games and Indies. This is the same with almost every new platform launch.

_-EDMIX-_2519d ago

@Pork- "No shit they had the big games, but outside of those big game"

lol so outside of big games, they didn't have games....ok bud.

Good luck with that.

Why are you excluding games?

The point is, those "big games" released at launch on PS4 and XONE, yet are not on Switch.

"I said that the PS4/XBO didn't have much in the first year *outside* of the big AAA franchises"

Well sure, Switch has even less as it doesn't even have those "big AAA franchises"

I mean...based on your logic, you still agree.

Its lacking in games. Switch doesn't have those "big AAA franchise" by 3rd party.

To exclude those games doesn't make any sense, you are saying that PS4 and XONE launched with games that clearly are not on Switch, sooooooo that actually means, by your post bud, that PS4 and XONE launched with "bigger" games.

"This is the same with almost every new platform launch"

No its not. You can't say " they had the big games, but outside of those big game"

???

They had games that are not coming to Switch at launch. THUS, no its not "the same".

So PS4 and XONE have big AAA game not found on Switch OH but at the same time they are "the same"?

LMFAO dude no, you can't have if both ways. PS4 and XONE launched with multiple series for a fact NOT FOUND on Switch and already confirmed to not be coming. By default it will have a lessor launch.

Stop excluding games to force a narrative. It makes no sense. I mean Switch had a bad launch, if you exclude Zelda, Mario Kart (ports bro) /s

Come on pal. This is looking at the entire launch, what you feel about big AAA is irrelevant. PS4 and XONE launched with some of the biggest properties in gaming.

The Xbone and PS4 were instantly getting ports of the latest big name franchises alongside the last generation systems. It only took one or two games from the franchises and they had flat out jumped ship to our current generation.
The other systems didn't have to wait a couple of years at all.

ninsigma2518d ago

Who waited a couple years?? Latest COD and Assassins creed a LOT more big 3RD party were released to PS4 and XBOX ONE the year they came out and haven't stopped since. None of that is happening for the Switch, that's the difference.
