What Is Project Scorpio's Max Price That Won't Alienate Gamers?

Project Scorpio's maximum price may be different depending on who you ask, however, there's one price that seems to be the true max for Scorpio at launch.

I really think it needs to be 399. And I believe it will be.

darthv722524d ago

I'd love for it to be $400 or less but realistically I am thinking upwards of $500+

Eonjay2524d ago

The answer is $499. Xbox 360 had a $499 SKU and the Xbox One also launched at $499. They can do $399 if they want but I don't think they want to absorb loses like that. In the end its about perception. If Microsoft is able to make people believe it is a premium machine then they will have expectations in their higher price range categories. The smartest thing to do is release $399 and $499 model. The $399 model will be in shorter supply and the $499 will have something that makes the $399 seem like a mistake to buy. Its a buy up strategy basically.

$299

As of now there aren't any exclusives on the console. No reason to buy one if I already have a good PC. If they start getting worthy exclusives than I don't mind paying $399, $499 but so far there is no reason for me to want one.

XXanderXX2524d ago

So you both want Xbox Scorpio a system that's 43-50 % more powerful and offering Native 4K , UHD Blue ray for a hundred dollars cheaper than the PS4 Pro
Who is not offering as much as Scorpio. So to add more to this you want MS to take a massive loss per unit cause you think it should be price at what u believe a good price point . Wow

Brave_Losers_Unite2524d ago (Edited 2524d ago )

@Ander

You need to English better. (Yes, it is written like that on purpose.)

"Who is not offering as much as Scorpio. "

What does this even mean?

Babadook72524d ago (Edited 2524d ago )

"Max Price That Won't Alienate"

That would be $499, at least to the die hard Xbox fans who I assume this machine is aimed at.

morganfell2524d ago

It should be realized that MS does not expect to sell a ton of these units. They have said so themselves that Scorpio isn't for everyone, even implying it is not for most gamers. Because of this they not only need to recoup the cost of each unit but they have to spread the recovery of the development, marketing, etc across a much smaller user base than the standard console. Due to this $399 seems to be a very unrealistic expectation.

mark_parch2524d ago

it can't be more than $499 or it will fail. if they announce $399 at e3 that would be a real mic drop moment, even though it would still be more expensive than it's competition for what it is that would be amazing, i still think it will be $499 though

UltraNova2524d ago

399 for the base SKU and 499 with the Elite Controller...

pinkcrocodile752524d ago

@Voodoo My husband has just bought the PS4 Pro and given his PS4 to a family down the road. It does look great. However our sons and I are waiting for the Scorpio as we have invested in 90+ games (I'm a good dad and don't mind spoiling them) and have no intention of switching to Sony, since we have the games and play anywhere on a lot of the newer titles on Windows 10.

So for us, there is only ONE option for a mid generation upgrade and that's Scorpio

ABizzel12524d ago

Max price $499. Anything higher and it's in trouble after the holiday season.

The hardcore will be willing to pay $499 for the Scorpio. However, what Micrsoft has to tap into is the mass market. For that they need a mass market price and I question how much of a mass market price even $399 is at the moment. This may sound controversial, but I think the highest they can really go is $349 and still hit the heart of the mass market. At $299 Scorpio dominance is assured, at $349 maybe they are still in range of the mass market, at $399 they are directly competing with Sony and no matter what Microsoft may think exclusive content, true exclusive content, matters a lot.

Nyxus2524d ago

The Scorpio isn't meant for the mass market. That's what the Xbox One S is for.

slate912524d ago

You have a point. 349 would be legendary. MS profits a lot on subscriptions, like both manufacturers do. So getting more scorpios out in the wild is their goal.

But still, 349 is hard to fathom lol.

tinynuggins2524d ago

it's either this...

Xbox one S $299.99
Xbox Scorpio $499.99

Or this..

Xbox one S $249.99
Xbox Scorpio $399.99

We should all assume that it's going to be $499.99. Anything higher than that i just don't see unless its a 2nd sku that includes a larger hard drive and a pro controller. I just hope it launches in September.

jmetalhead778122524d ago

@slate91

You may be on to something with the subscriptions. It may not be coincidence that they just launched game pass. With those additional subscriptions, it may allow them to take a bit of a hit on the console. I'm preparing for $499, but would be happy with $349-$399 for sure!

steveo1234562524d ago

The mass market really doesn't care about those exclusives

Nodoze2524d ago

Dominance? Really? Do you seriously believe that everyone is going to just rush to buy this thing (even if it were priced at 299)? So have all the Xbox gamers just been waiting until the release? Or are all Sony gamers just going to transition overnight due to specs? The answer is NO. While it will be interesting to see the uptake, I think the Xbox fans need to temper their excitement or they are going to be massively disappointed.

This is a NICHE offering. Phil Spencer has said so NUMEROUS times. This is NOT for the mass market.

gamer78042524d ago

Agreed it might be worth 499 but if they want to regain any ground it needs to be 399 at least for the base model

notachance2524d ago

I might buy this if it's $399, any higher I'll just use my gaming PC for anything MS..

fiveby92524d ago

It may be $399 but MS will take a loss per console likely at that price. I'd expect MS tries to make up the revenue loss through software sales and XBL. Or they are just willing to eat a loss to regain market share. I wonder if they will have a X1 trade in program.

DarXyde2524d ago (Edited 2524d ago )

They mentioned that it'll be "expensive " which, in my opinion, already disqualifies it from the standard $399 price tag we've come to accept. My guess is $500, plus or minus $50.

Then again, Microsoft could have said as much and then price it lower than that, making it more appealing to people expecting to spend more.

While I'm not interested in Scorpio itself, I am interested in it its arrival for two reasons: the price (which, in turn, will inform us on the current price of producing a 6TF console with a humble CPU) and how the industry responds to it.

On that note, I don't see price being an alienating factor. Microsoft's stance seems to be "either you buy it or you don't". Since all games are expected to run on both -- VR withstanding-- there's no real reason to be restrictive in terms of pricing.

slate912524d ago

No one has ever used the word "expensive"

DarXyde2524d ago

Fair enough. I misspoke.

I'm still speculating $450-$550. No more than this range, no less.

RiPPn2524d ago

Agree with you here.. anything over and it becomes a niche product for sure. That said I could see Microsoft release at a $449 - $499 price point to milk early adopters then lower it to $399 as sales stagnate, similar to what they did with the launch of the Xbox One. Then again they probably want to stay far away from anything that resembles that launch so we will see, only 2 1/2 weeks to go.

slate912524d ago

Exactly "far away from anything resembling that launch" lol. And a 499 price tag is all too familiar.

But, Ill buy it whatever the price. Keep my expectations low. Hope for the best.

rainslacker2524d ago

I'm thinking $499 min, 599 max. Might come in at $459 for the low end SKU, and an "elite" model for $549 or something similar. I can't imagine MS is going to go without an elite option and a lower priced version, although nowadays, it's hard to say that there is much they can do to change SKU's other than hard drive....which aren't priced that differently nowadays, or bundling it with games. Maybe throwing in an elite controller with the higher priced SKU.

1Victor2524d ago

Moldybrain would say something like "$199.99 and it will kill Sony even hardcore Sony fanboys will buy one at that price"
Reality is a whole different story even Phil said it will be priced as a premium console and we know how that turned out for the PS3 first 3 years.

XanderZane2524d ago

I don't know about that. I'm still saying $499. That's as high as I will pay for it anyways. Anything over $500 and they are definitely shooting themselves in the foot.

@UltraNova
Works for me. I'd take those numbers.

slate912524d ago

Yeah I can definitely see why people are saying 499. All fun and games though. Of course, not fun if it is over 499. Like you said, they would kill themselves if it were higher.

Cobra9512524d ago

Yep. $400 max. Anything higher, will hurt sales in a big way. Consider that right now, a game PC with better overall power and versatility can be had for as little as $600. By the time the Scorpio releases, the same PC tech will be even cheaper than that.

slate912524d ago

I got to disagree. I don't think you can get Forza up and running at 4k/60fps ultra settings with a $600 pc and still have room to spare.

corroios2525d ago (Edited 2525d ago )

499 more then this and it will flop. 399 is a dream, because microsoft would lose to much money on each console sold.

Gamers that want 4k native will have to pay. Even phil spencer warned that it was a premium console. If it wasnt and the price was 399 they would already reveal, to build hype.

Just think that each switch with old tech , the tegra x1, cost 250 to nintendo and now do the math.

freshslicepizza2524d ago

Switch has costs built into the screen, Scorpio is all about the hardware inside the box.

$399 is the target price to hit mass market but this is a premium product. Xbox One S is designed for regular gamers. $599 would be the top tier price they could go. After all the PS4 was priced that high 10 years ago.

$499 is what I am expecting.

darthv722524d ago

"$599 would be the top tier price they could go. After all the PS4 was priced that high 10 years ago."

I think you mean PS3 as PS4 wasn't around 10 years ago.

MegamanXXX2524d ago

I have to agree $499 is what I'm expecting

freshslicepizza2524d ago

Correct, the PS3 was $599. My Android phone and it's auto correct history pisses me off. I try Google keyboard and bought Swiftkey and they are all average at best.

CR7JUVE18972524d ago

The PS3 also had fairly new tech in the form of a Blu-Ray Drive, so that alone drove the price up through the roof. It didn't stop me from buying a PS3 then, and a $599 Scorpio won't stop me from buying one now.

However...................... ............ There had better be some Scorpio exclusive games for the system. I'm sorry, but to pay that much for upgraded Xbox One titles is crazy.

snoopgg2524d ago

Ps4 was never 499, it was cheaper then xboxone

rainslacker2524d ago

I would guess $499 and $599 on two different SKU's. Kind of like the PS3 was released at $499 and $599.

$599 could include a game or two, a bigger hard drive(although that's probably going to be in both), and possibly the Elite controller.

Cobra9512524d ago (Edited 2524d ago )

Production cost doesn't matter. It will be worth what consumers are willing to pay for it. This is an upscale console, and there are more ways to go upscale than to buy another console. Once you get into the $mid-hundreds, game PCs start to enter the picture, and they compete for the same consumer cash.

Edit: I think the people here calling for a $599 price or such on this puppy fail to realize how cheap a decent gaming PC can be had these days. You can get over 6 TF of GPU performance and MUCH better CPU performance than the Jaguar's right now, for about that much cash--let alone by the end of the year.

freshslicepizza2523d ago

A comparable Windows 10 PC that can do games commonly in 4K with at least a steady 30fps is more than$600, those are facts.

Lets see $150 X1 trade in towards $500 Scorpio = $250 cash out of my pocket. Not bad. Will need to see if they are serious with games first though, I see the slightest hint of laziness with creativity and i'll drop it like a hot potato.

Barricade_BE2524d ago

I think he meant he bought his X1 for $400, and will get a $150 trade-in towards Scorpio, so he 'payed' $250 for the years he used his regular X1. Or maybe I'm trying waaaaay too hard to see some logic in his post, when there actually is none. I guess that second option would be more plausible.

2pacalypsenow2524d ago

He paid $400 for his Xbox 1 S, with a $150 traded in, he's "loosing" $250.

I think this is what he meant, I hope.....

DivoJones2524d ago

To answer the question at hand... $499 is the max price to not alienate gamers. The base XB1 sold for that (albeit with Kinect) and sold well enough. Ideally it'll be $399 with a $449 larger HDD SKU. So really anywhere in the $399-499 range would be fine, anything above that will be a massive mistake.

Barricade_BE2524d ago

I don't think it'd be $399 ideally, the product needs a premium price tag to show it's a premium console.
$449 - $499 is the ideal price in my opinion. When you launch this thing at $399 and Sony drops the PS4 Pro to $349, what do you think the casuals would buy? The $50 difference isn't enough from a marketing point of view to convince people who don't know the specs and benchmarks behind the machines that one had an entire year longer to get the bottlenecks out.

Bethesda Needs to Reduce the Gaps Between New Fallout and Elder Scrolls Releases

Waiting a decade for new instalments in franchises as massive as Fallout and Elder Scrolls feels like a waste.

gamingbolt.com

Microsoft have Obsidian but I feel it's Bethesda who just don't want to play ball as they've always said they want to do it themselves.

Once MS bought Zenimax in 2020 they should have put the Outer Worlds 2 on the back burner, allow Bethesda to finish off its own Space RPG with Starfield (despite totally different tone why have two in your first party portfolio with two developers who's gameplay is a tad similar) and got Obsidian for one of their projects to make a spiritual successor to New Vegas.

When the Elder Scrolls VI is finished Bethesda can then onto the main numbered Fallout 5 themselves.

The Outer Worlds 2 started development in 2019 so putting it on the back burner wouldn't have been the end of the world, they'd have always come back to it once Fallout was done and it would have been nicely spaced out from Starfields release once they had most likely stopped supporting it and all the expansions were released.

If they did this back in 2020 when they bought Zenimax and the game had a good, steady 4 - 5 years development, you might have seen it release in 2025.

We are literally going to be waiting until 2030 at the very earliest for Fallout 5 and all they seem bothered about is pushing Fallout 76.

RaidenBlack3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Its not just only Todd not playing ball.
Obsidian have made a name for themselves in delivering stellar RPGs, but most famous once have always been sequels/spin-offs to borrowed IPs like KOTOR 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Stick of Truth etc.
Obsidian wants to invest more in their own original IPs like Outer Worlds or Pillars of Eternity with Avowed.
Similar to what Bluepoint & inXile wants to do or Kojima is doing (i.e not involving anymore in Konami's IPs).
So yea, even if New Vegas has the most votes from 3D Fallout fans, Obsidian just wants to do their own thing, like any aspiring dev studio and MS is likely currently respecting that.
But a future Fallout game from Obsidian will surely happen. Founder Feargus Urquhart has already stated an year ago that they're eager to make a new Fallout game with Bethesda, New Vegas 2 or otherwise. Urquhart was the director of the very first 1995's Fallout game after all.
And don't forget Brian Fargo and his studio inXile, as Brian Fargo was the director of Fallout's 1988 predecessor: Wasteland

KyRo11m ago(Edited 9m ago)

Obsidian should take over the FO IP. They're do far better with it than Bethesda who hasn't made a great game for almost 15 years

Still have my ps3 copies. Bought it at launch and another one when I found it cheap and in perfect condition about 10 years ago. I wouldn’t buy it on Switch but if they made a PS5 version I would. I still have one of my PS3 Fats hooked up so good to go either way.
