GameStop: Nintendo Switch Selling Out In Hours, Not Days

GameStop stores across the country may have gotten new shipments of the Nintendo Switch in advance of the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe release, but if you didn't already know that probably missed them. Nintendo's new hybrid living room/portable console started flying off of store shelves on day one, and it shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon. It's good news for Nintendo, a company that badly needed a win with its core console business after the tepid response to the Wii U and good news for the Nintendo fans that have managed to get their hands on one of the things.

CaptainObvious8782552d ago

Nintendo continuing with their artificial demand, no doubt.

Give me actual numbers or it means nothing.

septemberindecember2552d ago

They have provided real numbers. 2.74 million consoles sold in 28 days. You may have to wait until next months NPD to see the numbers for April.

Nintendo4Lifex2552d ago

3 million enough for you troll?

Kribwalker2552d ago

This was literally my point in an article today. Literally

Razzer2552d ago

Damn, krib. Must suck having to haunt all these sales threads where xbox is just irrelevant.

Istolla2552d ago

This argument makes no sense. Do you think Nintendo's investors would tolerate them holding back Switch production? Nintendo had to answer to investors like every other company.

They said they would ship 2 million Switches at launch, and ended up selling 2.7 million (more than any other console's first month). Does that seem like something they would do if they were holding back sales?

Kribwalker2552d ago

@razzer
I have and love my nitendo switch, already have Zelda and Mario kart and looking forward to splatoon 2 and Mario odyssey. I never said a word about Xbox, I just find it funny that exactly what I was arguing with people about is what comes up for the 2nd comment on this article.

subtenko2552d ago

This happens with every companies, its a launch. Everything sells out, even food products. You have to wait till they actually have constant supply of units, not low numbers

indysurfn2552d ago

No company gives numbers by the hour. Plus this is GAMESTOP and other retailers talking. And THEY sell all consoles and can easily compare how many are sold of each and how fast.

This is a slap in the face to the person the other day claiming to see the SWITCH on EBAY for 178 each!

Perjoss2552d ago

"Nintendo continuing with their artificial demand"

They already put out the sales figures and they made a huge amount of units in a short space of time. Keep trying though CaptainObvious878.

indysurfn2552d ago

@Istolla stop making bullet proof statments. Stop making these absolutely reasonable statements! I mean just how do you think these Nintendo haters/Trolls will be able to function with you doing that? Come one!

They are making statements that are not based on fact and then you turn around and make one that is? They will get confused! One of them one day might even start to be reasonable.

Damn good future for Tegra as well ... LOL

mcstorm2552d ago

Nvidia could be on to something of the switch goes on to sell well. Nintendo could also look to do 2 to 3 year refreshes of the system to. Abit like phones but you just buy the unit rather than the dock and joycons.

For me I really enjoy using the switch and can't wait for it to get into full swing. It may miss out on some of the big ips like cod but I think having the portable games on it will help push the console on likes of Pokémon would sell like hot cakes. Nintendo are on the up imo

InTheZoneAC2552d ago

Doesn't say anything about the future as we're not into year 2 just yet, look at other nintendo fads that died within a year.

And if the switch does succeed then that means no nintendo software support for rival consoles.

Erik73572552d ago

Never got Nintendo console. First time for me and many of my friends getting one.

Don't know how the highest rated exclusives and portability could be a fad

Wii u was also sold out....the only reason Nintendo consoles sells out is that too fewer have been shipped to retail. Trust me. By this time next year. Switch will be another Wii U failure. No CoD, No Fifa and No GTA. fail of a console

Razzer2553d ago

Happy to see the high demand. Glad I got mine when I did.

vickers5002553d ago

I'm curious myself as to the number of people who are buying these to play it, vs those who are buying them by the dozens to sell them on eBay to make a profit.

Scalpers love Nintendo products. And it honestly seems like Nintendo support the scalpers themselves sometimes with a lot of the shortage crap they continuously pull for known high demand items.

Razzer2552d ago

Nah....just high consumer demand. Scalpers do what they always do. If there were not high demand for the product then they would lose money scalping it. That simple.

BrandanT2552d ago

Scalpers are always around for products in high demand. PS4 had them too in its first months.

deathtok2552d ago

It's a moot point. Scalpers aren't selling to other scalpers so the sold units are closely representative of the user base.

CorndogBurglar2552d ago

And who do you think the scalpers would be selling them to?

Scalpers don't buy products that don't have a high demand. They would make no money. Think about it....

Lockdown5552552d ago

In order for scalpers to make money they have to be able to sell them. Since the Switch has such high selling numbers that is likely not the case.

Istolla2552d ago

Any proof for your claim? Or do you just spew garbage all the time?

vickers5002552d ago

@brandonT

Manufacturers other than Nintendo actually ramp up production enough to nullify the scalper effect pretty quickly. Nintendo does not, they like to make people squirm to make their products seem more appealing. The scalpers snatching up all of the consoles so that it's rare for an average joe/karen to get their hands on one helps them with that, because it creates artificial demand.

Nintendo constantly have shortage problems with all of their high demand items.

@deathtok

Scalpers may not sell to other scalpers, but they will sit on the majority of their stock for quite some time, catching a few idiots here and there, enough success to make the process worth it, all the while increasing demand and decreasing patience and rationality for those who will go on to buy one for 500 dollars.

@istolla

Which claim? That scalpers love Nintendo items, or that nintendo love scalpers? Or that Nintendo constantly have shortage problems?

In any case, heres a few that cover all of them.

-amiibo: These small pieces of plastic physical DLC were only available to retailer campers, or at higher prices from scalpers for about a year, to a year and a half before they started becoming steadily available to the general public. These should not have been so scarce, for so long.

-majoras mask limited editon: They knew this would sell out in minutes, as it did, yet didn't make anywhere near enough to meet demand, leading to this being one of the most laughably unavailable products (for a normal price) they've ever had.

-NES mini: from what I hear, still unavailable to most people, even though it's just some cheap ass flash memory card with some roms on it, built into a cheap plastic nes housing.

-the gamecube adapter: Pretty much the same situation as most of the above. Extremely low supply, high demand, what little supply there was wad snatches up by scalpers within minutes/hours of release, forcing people like myself to go with the 3rd party mayflash adapters.

And that's just SOME of the stuff I kept with.

Take every switch away from scalpers and put them back on the shelves and then see how well they sell. I shop and browse around a lot, and no other companies products are scalped nearly as much as Nintendo, at least in the gaming world. Go and look at these peoples ebay pages you'll find primarily nintendo products in their inventory. Nintendo could tell a few of the bigger stores to limit their stock to 2 per account at launch, which would drastically reduce the amount of people buying these things to resell, but why would they do that when they can just go ahead and make those quick dollars off of the scalpers. It's the only way outside of an exclusive every 3 years that they can still remain relevant.

indysurfn2552d ago

Your comparing this to when there was only a few thousand Wii's availible. This time there was been near 3 million in two MONTHS.

Plus there is demand this time according to many major retailers world wide. Even countries have said it is the fastest selling console. So don't worry about the scalpers. In the end they will get caught with too much inventory.

deathtok2552d ago

Your making less sense when you expand on what you said. Are these scalpers who are holding stock also buying all the games too? You know the ones readily available on shelves everywhere.

You don't have to like Nintendo but let's not get silly.

LOGICWINS2552d ago

Razzer, have you experienced any issues with the dock scratching your screen? Would it be necessary to buy a screen protector?

Christopher2552d ago

Better safe than sorry as it depends on the individual and how they handle certain devices (as well as anyone else who would use it). So, get one as a preventive measures I would say.

davand1142552d ago

The majority of people won't have that problem but I suggest you get a tempered glass screen protector because you're going to take it around your house and outside. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Razzer2552d ago

I put a screen protector on right away. Not because of the dock, just for general protection. But I have not noticed any abnormal friction between the unit and dock.

IraqCombatVet2552d ago

I haven't experienced anything. I'm just really careful when I use it.

nitus102552d ago (Edited 2552d ago )

Since the device is designed to be portable you should consider getting a decent screen protector such as a glass one which is a little more expensive than the film ones but is so much easier to keep clean. There is nothing worse than playing a game when the screen is scratched or even one with fingerprints all over it.

Lets put it this way do you have a mobile phone or even a tablet? If you don't have a screen protector on those devices then you are going to get the screen scratched no matter how careful you are.

@IraqCombatVet

It's all well and good being careful but if you are not the only one using the device what can you say about the other users. Playing on the go is attractive but just getting bumped (not deliberate) can cause you to drop the device.

LOGICWINS2552d ago (Edited 2552d ago )

Thanks for the advice guys. I honestly hate screen protectors. The plastic ones on my phones scratch easy which degrades the viewing quality. When I tried switching to a glass screen protector, I had trouble installing it. I eventually got a magnetic flip cover for my phone and it works FLAWLESSLY. No scratches on my screen whatsoever.

This flip cover for the Switch looks awesome:

https://www.amazon.com/Nint...

According to one of the comments, you can "dock" the switch without sliding it into the docking station. You can use a USB-C extension cable.

theblessedhellride2552d ago

I went 3 or 4 days without a screen protector and my switch ended up with a light amount of scuff the size of a finger tip in the lower right corner just outside the screen. I removed the switch from the dock 3 or 4 times and it spent 95% of those days docked. I received mine 2 weeks after launch and had read about the problem before so I was very careful docking it. None of the scuff is on the screen so it isn't anything I am worried about but going longer without a screen protector could have been bad.

Sirk7x2552d ago

I would highly recommend the glass screen protector on Amazon. Cheap, works great, you get a pack of 2. Easy to put on.

King Nezz2552d ago

I bought a screen protector. And even with that, the bottom left side of the screen is a little scuffed up. But it's obviously ok as I have the protector.

My worry is the back of the switch. It's scratched on both lower sides. I'm anal with my things so I know it's not my carelessness.

Razzer2552d ago

I have zero scratches anywhere on my Switch and I take it out of my dock regularly.

captainexplosion2552d ago

I got a Switch yesterday and put it in the dock one time and there was a scratch on it. The first thing you should do is put a screen protector on it.

Same here I got the one with the red and blue joycons from Best Buy, waiting in line. Best Buy actually had 60 colored Switches, and only 30 gray switches. The best thing is that everyone in line got a Switch! 90 plus launch day at Best Buy. I got to say Best Buy is the number 1# place to get a launch console hands down.

Prince_TFK2553d ago

Now get ready to produce more of those Switch, Nintendo. Dont turn this into a NES mini situation.

Christopher2552d ago (Edited 2552d ago )

They'll keep it scarce until it stops selling out quickly or until the Holiday season, whichever comes first.

CorndogBurglar2552d ago

And then what? They'll spend a ton of money building an overstock of consoles knowing the demand has gone down so they can sit on the shelves unsold? Yeah. That makes a lot of sense.

Razzer2552d ago

Keep it scarce? They pushed nearly 3 million units out at launch. And they still can't keep up. That isn't "keeping it scarce", as if intentional. That is not being able to meet demand.

Lockdown5552552d ago

It's not scarce... It's barely behind the launch numbers of the PS4. The units are moving and there are no signs of scarcity.

Erik73572552d ago

2.7 million in March is "scarce" I guess

frostypants2552d ago

Why would that be a remotely smart thing to do? "Let's keep our unit sales down when demand is high!"...said no smart marketer ever.

Christopher2550d ago

***They pushed nearly 3 million units out at launch.***

Oooh, a whole 1/2 of what Sony and MS push out normally at a console's release with the ability to mass produce even more if necessary or just keep warehouses stocked to send to stores as new product is needed.

3 million is not a lot at release. You do realize that we can still find and buy Day One Xbox One boxes, right? There were millions of those made.

*** They'll spend a ton of money building an overstock of consoles knowing the demand has gone down so they can sit on the shelves unsold? Yeah. That makes a lot of sense.***

They'll make enough so that most people can get it but so that there's always a demand for the product. But, during the Holiday Season, the production will likely triple in number from what they are doing now if not moreso. The whole thing with all of Nintendo's products the last few years has been scarcity. Why do you think the Switch would be any different?

***It's not scarce... It's barely behind the launch numbers of the PS4.***

Yes, it is. PS4 didn't sell out with the numbers they had, Switch is. And, their numbers are so high because of the scarcity (people think they won't be able to get one for a while, buy it sooner when they can).

There were a ton of them everywhere today but they sold out in a few hours. Hopefully there will be another shipment next week.

EddieNX 2552d ago

Theyve already said they plan on making 10m Switches not including what theyve already made before the end of the financial year , april 2018

Elwenil2553d ago

Yet another pro-Nintendo title that completely misses the point. There are no mention of numbers in the article and even it states that there are supply issues. So if you sell out 1k items in a few hours per store, then you have something to talk about, something that would justify this ridiculous headline. Instead there are no numbers to go along with this claim of "hours" to give it any sort of bite. Why? Because Nintendo still refuses to meet the demand and continues their ridiculously obvious campaign of artificially inflated hype. The sadder part of it is the fools who are falling for this and jumping on the hype train to nowhere insisting that the Switch is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Nevermind that Nintendo has a history of pulling this stunt. I guess it's true, those who do no learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

deafdani2553d ago (Edited 2553d ago )

Here are the numbers: Nintendo initially had a total of 2 million Switch units allocated for March worldwide.

https://gamerant.com/ninten...

And after they saw the crazy demand, they upped production big time:

http://www.polygon.com/2017...

And finally, the total sales numbers of Switch units for the month of March was 2.74 million, way more than the initial planned 2 million shipment:

http://www.polygon.com/2017...

So, shut the hell up about your "artificially inflated hype" nonsense. Nintendo is trying to make as many Switch units as they possibly can, the console is just flying off store shelves.

freshslicepizza2553d ago (Edited 2553d ago )

Yes it is true Nintendo is trying to meet demand by making more but the problem is they didn't think this would sell that well so they were underprepared to begin with.

from your own link,
http://www.polygon.com/2017...

"But we could posit that the Switch’s momentum isn’t far away from the Xbox One’s or PlayStation 4’s at launch; the consoles sold 3 million and 4.2 million in their month-and-a-half launch windows, respectively."

Nintendo took a very reserved approach, most likely due to the WiiU failing so badly. They did not take pre-orders very seriously either. If we are in Summer and Switch is still hard to find then I think something is very wrong with this company when it comes to manufacturing. Jimquisition has done many articles on the company pointing that out.

Elwenil2552d ago

@deafdani,

We aren't talking about total sales or total production, we are talking about the article's headline and the fact that Gamestop claims they are selling out in hours. So how many units are we selling in these "hours"? 5? 100? without a number the entire idea of the title is irrelevant fluff just like your foolish fanboyism. What I say is not nonsense, it's simple fact and no matter how you spin it, it's still the truth.

"Facts are stubborn things." - John Adams

TekoIie2552d ago

@Elwenil

Dude did you just say you were presenting facts?

"So how many units are we selling in these "hours"? 5? 100? without a number the entire idea of the title is irrelevant fluff"

That there is SPECULATION. Using that quote at the end of your comment is just golden.

Elwenil2552d ago

@ TekoIie,

The facts are that there are no numbers mentioned in this article to give the title any basis. What is really golden is that you can't understand simple English.

"Because Nintendo still refuses to meet the demand and continues their ridiculously obvious campaign of artificially inflated hype."

If its "inflated hype" then how are they not meeting demand? Not meeting demand means there are a lot of people that want the system....even after being released almost 2 months ago. That tells me there isn't inflated hype, but a legitimate demand. You may not like the console, hell I don't have one either and don't plan on buying one unless they release certain games for it, but just because you don't like it doesn't mean there aren't a whole lot of people that do.

Razzer2552d ago

LOL.....Switch is selling really well. Get over it.

Trez12342552d ago

I haven't bought the switch yet because my wii u played zelda just fine but I know I'll get mine when xenoblade drops. Having said that, that thing is selling really well and there's nothing " artificial " about it.

Minus the specs, it's a next gen console without a doubt and very convenient. If it can keep releasing more high caliber games and score some multiplats, I'm sure it would atleast do better than the wii u.

Bethesda France focused on publishing and marketing in the region. And 15 people lost their jobs as part of the closure.

I wonder if this is part of Microsoft's strategy to abandoned physical media or possibly gamepass advertising makes their roles redundant you don't need to market a game as hard when the majority of players get the game as part of a sub which already promoted upcoming games
