The 2TB Xbox One S has been unboxed in Norway, can't run 4k out of the box, needs an update

According to Microsoft, the Xbox One was supposed to release on the 23rd of August 2016 in Europe. However, it seems like someone has already got their hands on the console in Norway where he unboxes his console on camera. However, it requires an update to run 4k content.

Original Xbox One does the same thing. You had to download an app to play Blu Ray movies.

darthv722829d ago

It would be funny if his problem was lack of a 4k tv. that would explain there not being an option for it seeing as he never said what tv he has in the first place.

Juiceid2829d ago

Or, maybe he has an older 4k tv that doesn't have hdmi 2.2 , which is required for 4k blu ray. Or a shitty receiver, or shitty hdmi cables. That's why I'm waiting for an electronics website to review this thing.

@Juiceid

I would definitely check out the specifications of your 4K TV. It should support HDR10 at the very least. Dolby Vision HDR may work but I would definitely check this as well since it is a competing format.

It is also important to make sure your TV supports HDMI 2.0 minimum and you will have to make sure that the HDMI cable is 2.0 or better as well.

Here are a few URL's that may help or confuse. Personally, I would adopt the wait and see approach.

Unspoken2828d ago

First gen 4K TVs lacked HDMI 2.0 and even some monitors. It was the push to sell 2nd gen.

dreadz742828d ago

@Juiced wrong first and some second gen 4k tvs only had HDMI 1.4..

Deadpooled2828d ago

@juiceid

'shitty hdmi cables'

A $3 HDMI cable does the same as a $100 cable, it's all marketing BS.

Unspoken2827d ago

False Deadpool. Cables have a maximum throughput and range, it is just more important now because of the push for higher bandwidth due to 4K, 3D, HDR, ethernet, and uncompressed audio formats.

It needs the windows 10 anniversary update to enable all features.

It releases august 2nd same time as XB1S

Godmars2902828d ago

Still not a good thing for a general consumer device.

darthv722828d ago (Edited 2828d ago )

What's not a good thing? We dont know any other info as to if he even has the right kind of tv. He has the system but thats all we know.

4k has a certain set of requirements to make it work right. The xb1 is just one piece of the equation.

Godmars2902828d ago

Everyone, any reasonable consumer, should have an issue with buying what's suppose to be a complete device that then needs additional elements in order to run basic features. Where cell phones get away with such is exactly because of their nature, standalone HD players -even smart ones- the PS4 and XB1 shouldn't. Those should be usable straight from the box.

This is really only example of corporate desire overriding/dictating consumer consideration. Crap that's been going on since before movie studios let out the idea of one use VHS tapes.

Godmars2902828d ago

@R0kiemon:
Try bother reading next time. You'll notice that I mention the PS4 before the XB1 regarding this crap.

That the Xbox camp can't see past the Xbox iswhy things are as they are. Defended XBL Gold saying it didn't effect PSN, then pointed and laughed when PS+ became mandatory for PS4 online with a total lack of irony.

Chris122828d ago

Godmans, consoles are exactly that type of device these days. Regular updates and new features are the way they work. The days of owning a simple console that just played games and long gone. Contrary to your opinion, IMO updates and feature additions are a great thing for the consumer and exactly what we do expect these days.

Unspoken2828d ago

Wow, you need an update to use a piece of hardware in this day and age? What has this world come to?! It's unforgivable! Ban all machines!

I will boycott hardware and not purchase this sweet deal of a game machine and UHD player in one. I will stand tall and not let one single megabyte through until these corporate wahoos stop the oppression.

Sorry to tell you but that ship sailed long ago.

DARK_WOLF2828d ago

Someone is using a device before its release date and its not functioning correctly due to its features not being enabled yet via day1 patch.

This is a non issue so stfu with the concernd trolling

mark_parch2828d ago

wow, its just an update lol why are people crying about it

DAEMONIFEAR2828d ago

These days they push out the product and rely on the consumer to update! I see your point but it's the norm for almost anything electronic these days! And seeing as many people are connected in some way or another it's become second nature in a way..you buy the device take it home connect it up, update to the latest softwares/firmware and you're done! There's no real hard task at all it's not hurting the consumer! It would only hurt someone that doesn't live in the 21st century which those kinds of people don't buy consoles they buy simple dvd/bluray players and probably never heard of smart phones, smart tvs etc..

And if like me internet speeds are that fast the update is quick and not noticable..also this guy should be upset he got his X1s early before the actual release date and before the day the huge update has arrived August 2nd..so he shouldn't whinge!

Christopher2828d ago

It's weird, but it's not horrible. You have to update the blu-ray app as well and I think that's a licensing thing of some sort. I'd imagine it may be something similar here.

FamilyGuy2828d ago

This is stupid, you shouldn't be required to update for 4k playback, that's the main feature of the revision. It should be capable right out of the box. This makes no sense. Usually all you have to do is click yes on a license agreement or something.

XanderZane2828d ago

I'm sure this probably was done purposely by Microsoft for retailers who decided to break the street date and give the XB1 S to gamers weeks in advance. When the systems officially launches, you'll be able to play your Blu-Ray movie in 4K.

Good lawd that unboxing was horrible. I get the delicacy of opening up a new console but i wanted more visual of the unit it self instead of a 360 spin @ the end.

I just bought one for my Daughters Boyfriend who wanted an Xbox really bad after he got out of the Army. He's going to be a happy dude.

ApocalypseShadow2829d ago

I may not be a Microsoft fan personally, but that was a cool thing you're doing for your daughters boyfriend.

I was in the Army myself years ago. Thank him for his service for me.

melrex2828d ago

why did people down vote what you said, this world is shit.

XMarkstheSpot2828d ago

@Mel Not necessarily, just remember theres more agrees then disagrees :p so that's say something

UltraNova2828d ago

@melrex
Its like the Trump vs Hilary thing where the latter is the sanest choice( by far) but a lot of people will still vote for the former...

People just love act and think later or not at all.

Death2828d ago

Trump is definately less sane, but Hilary should be held accountable for her mishandling of classified information. I don't see how either candidate is qualified to be president.

danny8182828d ago

he got downvoted because he didnt say he bought a ps4 lol this site is shit

Thk him for defending our country.....but you should be ashamed he's lost touch with the world while away....get him a ps4

Kiwi662828d ago

So why can't the guy get the console that he wants as heres a fun fact , there are people who prefer xbox over ps

krypt19832828d ago

Nah he is not a loner, going with the xb1 great idea he might want to branch out with some of his old comrades, which is perfect with xb1 like Skype xboxlive , ps4 is a loner system for single player games just imagine trien to use that horrible ass Playstation network ...

deadfrag2829d ago (Edited 2829d ago )

Most likely the Xbox one and the PS4 can also play 4K after updating the drives firmware but has always they want to sell the new Skus and won't update the first generation Skus.

Zero_Suit_Samus2829d ago (Edited 2829d ago )

You need HDMI 2.0 for 4k. You guys need to let that rumor die. It's not happening.

Rude-ro2829d ago

Not arguing nor saying it can, but I thought the Xbox one has hdmi 2.0?

ziggurcat2829d ago

@rude

OG Xbox One has HDMI 1.4.

rainslacker2829d ago

The HDMI could be updated through firmware. It's the HDCP2.2 that can't be updated. The HDCP2.2 resides on the HDMI controller chip though, and it's believed that the current systems don't have the proper silicon requirements as laid out by the spec. The systems themselves should be capable otherwise, but the systems came out before the HDCP/HDR spec was finalized, and now they aren't compliant with their current hardware.

livininsin2828d ago

HDMI 1.4 is perfectly capable of transmitting UHD/4k up to 30fps and I have read that you can stream 4k youtube videos on the Xbox One (I am a pc/home theater guy, I don't personally own either of the consoles).

If you want UHD/4k at 60fps or 4:2:2 color space then you need HDMI 2.0. If you want UHD/4k with HDR then you need HDMI 2.0a and if you want UHD/4k that uses HDR with dynamic metadata as used in the Dolby Vision standard you will need HDMI 2.0b. If you want to play UHD Blu-ray or stream content at 4k that has the latest content protection, you will need HDCP 2.2. Neither console can do these things.

2828d ago
Unspoken2828d ago

It is possible to squeeze 4K/60fps through 1.4 at 4.2.0 chroma. Moving images would typically be fine but text may have problems.

You're not wrong,PS4 will get an update to play 4K,here's an article showing about it. Xbone and PS3 gets mentioned also. http://m.neogaf.com/showthr...

Ravenor2828d ago

That's not an article, it's a thread from a user who rants like a conspiracy theorist. Since when were we posting Neogaf threads like that's some kind of verification? I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm just leaning closer to unlikely.

jiggyteddy2828d ago

You're one of those guys that believe everything on the net huh?

NatFanBoyRestricted2827d ago

Keep checking for that update buddy lol

opinionated2829d ago (Edited 2829d ago )

That's one good thing about switching to the gears model. Hopefully that 2 extra months irons out any kinks that happen to turn up.

GeeksULTD2829d ago

The guy says that even his 4k BluRay is causing errors and giving him an error code, meanwhile 1080p is completely fine

VoodooProject2829d ago

They where showing off 4k UHD blu ray content (Deadpool) from 4k blu ray disk on the Xbox One S at Comic Con. It was stunning!

GeeksULTD2829d ago

@VoodooProject, he is also trying to get Deadpool to work, it's getting him an error code.

Auron2829d ago

Because you need an update in order to view 4k did you not read the article? Thats also why the 4k deadpool is giving him an error.
