Microsoft rolls the dice in a huge Xbox gamble

A slump in Xbox hardware sales is to be expected before the One S arrives, but the company's next results will show whether Scorpio has taken a longer-term toll.

Based on Gamestops's report, it seems X1S is pre-ordering very well.

freshslicepizza2825d ago

based on your disagrees it's not. who to trust, n4g members or sources like gamestop and amazon?

uptownsoul2825d ago (Edited 2825d ago )

Paragraphs 8 & 9 really show the difference between Microsoft's 49M Live users & PlayStation's 20M PS+ users

(the former is the total number of people who used the Xbox Live store, while the latter is how many people are actually paying for PlayStation's subscription service)

Rude-ro2824d ago

What about when day ones were "sold out"? Was that fans or marketing pr lies because we all know they did not sell out and were available for quite some time.
Microsoft has been caught with their pr lies more than anything any fan on n4g has been.

Chevalier2824d ago

I work at an EB / Gamestop and my store hasn't seen a significant change in preorders. The older units are selling ok at $50 off. I don't expect a big change in stock or a rush of purchasers either.

fiveby92824d ago

But the interesting picture not told by sales is how many of the X1S sold are people 'upgrading' from their orig X1 or are new sales. I suspect a fair number of the sales are not new X1 owners but existing customer base.

PistolsAtDawn2824d ago

You're right, the unbiased source is better. When people put their money where their mouth is...it means more.

@uptotown: i dont have an XB1 but i still use my 360.

The problem with this site is everybody is a fan boy. Hard numbers are all that matters, not opinion.

Best Buy always have two list pertaining to best sellers. The current release in stocked products are on one list like the link you have provided and another separate list for pre orders. Pre order products are not found on current in stocked best seller list at Best Buy.

Here is the best selling pre order products for videogames. http://www.bestbuy.com/site...
The 2tb white Xbox One S is #1 and the just announced Gears Xbox One S is #2.

Don't know if you never knew that is the case at Best Buy or purposely trying to cover it up to troll.

morganfell2824d ago (Edited 2824d ago )

No Horsetamer you are wrong, Best Selling without the preorder filter puts the Xbox 2TB system about 7 pages down. Using the preorder filter hides all of the currently available items that are outselling the Xbox 1s. We are discussing bestsellers period to include preorders and current items. The X1s is even being outsold by the WiiU Mario Kart 8 at Best Buy. I don't know if you are unaware of how the best buy reporting system works or if you are trolling my comments to try and hide the truth.

TheHorseTamer2823d ago (Edited 2823d ago )

Morganfell

The Best Buy page is the way it is as previously hot pre order products are this way too.

If you want to see a list of all current best selling videogames items with both pre existing and pre order products messed together, look no further than the biggest Videogame store in the world.

Xbox One S 2tb Sku is on the first page out of a total of 2,042 pages.
http://www.gamestop.com/bro...

morganfell2823d ago

So you aren't even going to acknowledge you made a mistake and took a jab at me when you were dead wrong? You just want to say pay no attention to the man behind the curtain? That the Wii U is outselling the X1s at Best Buy? Its a week away from release it had better move up at Gamestop. And it was being outsold on that same page up until two days ago. Once it releases within a week it will drop again.

TheHorseTamer2823d ago (Edited 2823d ago )

Morganfell above

The Wii U is not outselling any Xbox on Best Buy. For non preorder products, there are 2 other Xbox One Skus at #4 and #12 on the list before the Mario Kart Wii U Sku.

Like I said, Best Buy best selling list works differently than those of Amazon and Gamestop. A game like No Man's Sky PS4 sku is #3 on the BB Best selling list for pre order and what page was that on lumping it with the existing released gaming products? On Gamestop, No Man's Sky PS4 sku is on the second page out of the 2,042 total pages of its best sellers list. A recent survey indicated No Man's Sky is the most anticipated game for the remaining of the year so unless those pre order numbers are incorrect, like you are saying about the Xbox one S, then you might have a point.

The key figure is how many are new Xbox One customers or just Xbox One owners upgrading. If its the latter then it will be very short lived.

Bahamut2824d ago (Edited 2824d ago )

Gamestop has always said Xbone is doing well. Then they try to sell one to you.

Lime1232823d ago

I hope that with slim, Xbox One will start closing that 20 million gap to PS4.

Yeah, you're such a gambler that you rent PS4's to play games on it.

Real high roller you are.

TheHorseTamer2825d ago (Edited 2825d ago )

And the result is a six from the dice.

I don't get the media. When Microsoft releases an expected slim revision of an expected hardware model and also announced a more powerful version for gamers that want to take advantage of the added power, we get articles like this. I like choices and customers like choices. It is only a gamble if MS don't do anything and just keep the current Xbox One as it is and moving forward.

People have forgotten a little history from last generation. Before the released of the Xbox 360 S in the summer of 2010, it was beaten by the Wii on a monthly basis.

Here is a look at the May 2010 Console NPD.
Wii - 334.8K
Xbox 360 - 194.6K
PS3 - 154.5K

Now, in Jun, the month the Xbox 360 S was released
Xbox 360 - 451.7K
Wii - 422.5K
PS3 - 304.8K

The following month in July NPD.
Xbox 360 - 443,500
Wii - 253,900
PlayStation 3 - 214,500

And the Xbox 360 went on to be the top selling console for 36 out of 37 months thereafter. Not saying the Xbox One S will be doing the same on the chart, but it will no doubt help MS continue to have a strong presence in the home console market. The Scorpio will only continue that.

darthv722825d ago

It should also be noted that the 360 also had the better multiplat games during that gen but this time the table is turned.

I get what you are saying but hardware doesnt really sell unless you take into account software as well. And while the games available for the xb1 may be fun... in the court of public opinion, it seems, the PS4 has the better received games.

All that could change though. If those who shunned the xb1, and claimed to want to wait for a slim , actually show up and get one.

uptownsoul2825d ago (Edited 2825d ago )

@TheHorseTamer

You obviously missed the point of the article. Would the 360 Slim have done as good IF Microsoft announced the following, more powerful, console at the same time as the slim (that would release 1 year later)? Thats what the article is essentially asking.

Bobafret2824d ago

If MS had waited until next year and sprung the Scorpio suddenly, everyone that purchased an S would have raked them over the coals and Sony fanboys would trolling in overdrive.

rainslacker2824d ago (Edited 2824d ago )

This current "slim" release though is a bit of an untested way to go about slim releases. Typically, slims release with reduced manufacturing prices, and a price drop which helps to drive sales. With the X1S, the first models they release will be as much as the PS4 was at launch, and the PS4 is likely to get a price drop to $299 soon, and MS own current X1 is at the $250 mark. Not too much later, they'll have a $300 model, which will be priced the same as the PS4, and still be more than the OGX1. Or Sony may push through their own slim, and the Neo at some currently unknown price, and make things interesting all around.

Not gonna say that the X1S won't sell, because I'm sure it will, particular at first, but I'm keenly interested to see just how many people are interested in upgrading to a more feature rich slim version....particularly when those features don't affect a very large portion of the market right now....or in other words, MS isn't going to have anything to appeal to the budget concious consumer for a while if they remove the OGX1 from the market, as the base X1S is going to be the same price they have their X1 at now, and the other is more expensive, and neither may have features which are applicable to more than 10% of the current TV market in the US(even less if you consider not all 4K TV's are HDR)....and even less elsewhere.

Unless one has a 4K HDR TV, they'd simply be spending more for an X1 to get the S....and I'm personally on the fence if HDR and UHD are worth the price of entry since I already have an X1.

let's see xbox one is not selling well so ms have to take a chance. and to be honest with you the slim xbox s looks sexy(lol) but i think they should have made a black colored one too

scorpio is such unknown when it's over 12 months away and we don't know what neo is gonna be

xbox s could do well due to HDR and 4k bluray player. last year xbox one had an excellent lineup of games and ps4 had $299 uncharted bundle yet ps4 won 3 out of 4 holiday months. so let's just wait and see how it's gonna turn out

when it comes to sales we can take guesses but that's about it. we the core gamers are such a small vocal minority yet there are millions upon millions of gamers who don't visit gaming sites and just buy whatever they see on tv or told by their family/friends

Look the only way you ever see the true power of a console is on a multiplayer game, almost all of PS3/4 exclusive games are single player game (Lonestation or selfishstation) the game look amazing but once you complete it that's it no replay value, GOW HEAVEN BLADE UNCHARTED series, all looked great but were is the extra fun, what the point in having a great game and not share it, imagine your friends came over, you can't give them another pad because most of those amazing looking games you have single player.

chrisco84au2824d ago

Wow, just wow.

Many consider Ocarina of Time the best game ever. I loved playing that with my friends........
I could name game after game that is a classic that does not have, nor need, multiplayer.

BTW - Uncharted HAS MP, Uncharted 2 was seen as one of the best MP experiences of last gen but also as a BONUS to the SP which was so great.

This is the saddest comment I have read in a while.

Stogz2824d ago

Umm what games can you pass the controller to play Co op on with x1?? Not Halo that's for sure. Neither side has many couch Co op games, so this comment is really, really reaching...

neutralgamer19922823d ago

Raiden

Kill zone 2
Resistance 2 8 player co op
Uncharted 2 and 3 mp
The last of us mp
God of war co op

What another pad games did Xbox 360 had and now Xbox one halo 5 didn't even have co op

So a lot of talk I see

rainslacker2824d ago (Edited 2824d ago )

I think the X1S is chasing that HDR/UHD market to try and get sales. A slim that costs more than the consoles it's replacing is pretty much unheard of, and the price of the OGX1 is getting to the point where it can't go much lower any time soon and still be profitable as prices that can be reduced probably have been for a while, and there is fixed costs involved elsewhere.

There is literally no reason to get an X1S if one doesn't have/want a 4K TV, and that TV is also HDR compatible. Even if one has a 4K TV, but it's non-HDR, they'd be better off just using the cheaper X1, because it also upscales just fine. If one is looking for something that may benefit them later, then it makes sense, or just wants a slimmer console for some reason, it can make sense, but I can't see where the market is for this system, because if the system can't sell to expectations at $250-300, then I don't know how it's going to sell to expectations at $300-400 beyond the UHD/HDR market, which is quickly about to have a lot more competition, and MS will be overpriced for those looking for an inexpensive entry point for a UHD/HDR BR player.

Unspoken2823d ago

Do you not think based off current trends the S will drop in price as well when the competition increases?

The 500GB model will likely take the $250 spot with bundled games while still having functionality for gaming.

As far as 4K adoption, it's inevitable given the amount of material and UHD Blu Ray's entering the market.

rainslacker2823d ago

Think it might have to. It could weather the added value aspect of a UHD player and a game system, but come this holiday, UHD players will be around $300 for a basic off brand type model, and Samsung is expected to have a $350 model. Sony has a standalone which most believe will be in the $400-500 range. MS could manage to get sales through this market with a $300 entry and the $400 entry will likely be a decent price going through the holidays, however, with the way many 4K TV's integrate these electronics nowadays to be more fluid, MS may have a harder time getting people who want simplicity. For instance, Samsung TV's and their devices work seamlessly together for the most part.

I think MS will phase out the current X1 models. There's really no reason the UHD/HDR should add that much to the price of the current model. Current system is more than capable to run the discs and media, it just needed an update to the HDMI controller chip to output HDR encoded discs, although I'm unsure if MS licensed the Dolby HDR spec which could add to the price.

4K adoption is going to happen as things phase out. Normal attrition and upgrading of TV's will be normal, and 1080 is likely going to be reserved for smaller screens, but 4K is already cheaper than 1080 in the same time frame, but mainstream content is likely to take longer, and UHD content is likely to see normal releases. However, this adoption isn't going to be so fast that it would really matter for buying the current systems for the most part. Good for people that move to 4K, but it's a rather small segment of the market right now. However, gamers are known to be a bit ahead of the curve on such technologies, so it's just a matter of getting the more casual and "mainstream" gamer to adopt.

Lennoxb632825d ago

I hate how regular generational releases are always a gamble or a desperate move for MS. But for Sony they consider it business as usual.

MatrixxGT2824d ago

Welcome to N4G post 2012. Enjoy your stay!

iceman062824d ago

I think the author is more or less saying the gamble is releasing the slim and the Scorpio within a year. IMO, that IS a bit of a gamble...for BOTH companies. As crazy as people on N4G get about the mid cycle upgrade, there will be mass market types that don't get it. Why pay for the new system and there aren't new games? If there ARE exclusives, then what about the early adopters? These are aimed at the core. I don't see them dramatically moving the needle one way or the other. The slim might entice some to go for it. But, even then, that will compete with the remaining stock of originals that are getting crazy discounts and incentives. My bet is that the majority of the slims will be upgrades (that's both Sony, if the have one...rumors, and MS). I'll be shocked if the Neo and Scorpio come close to selling what the originals have sold. That would require over 60 million new sales of systems that aren't meant for new games.

rainslacker2824d ago

How many slims have come out with the base model more than the current models? It's a gamble because of that. New features won't be applicable to everyone, so MS is gambling that they can get sales through the UHD/HDR market which won't have a ton of competition this year, but it's going to be a short lived market by next year...but by then, they'll be readying their Scorpio, and the X1S will likely be the same price as the X1 currently is because there's actually nothing in it more than the current systems beyond an updated HDMI port and controller, and likely the more standard fabrication reduction.

And I've seen plenty of people say the Slims are typical. Haven't seen many make mention of how MS slim doesn't follow the standard slim release model though.

Lennoxb632823d ago

The 360 slim had upgrades so I don't know what you're talking about.

rainslacker2823d ago

It had improvements, not upgrades. There's a difference, and MS never marketed it as an upgraded system. Biggest upgrade was not having to worry about RROD....which isn't a feature, rather something that should have been expected.

But, I guess the slim base model did release at the same price as the then discounted "elite" system they were trying to move through retail, but at the same time, the slim was still priced less than the competition whose own base model was still $100 more.

Rainbow Cotton Interview: Lead Programmer Sheds Light on the Dreamcast Remake

VGChartz's Evan Norris: "If you haven't played Rainbow Cotton before, you're not alone. A Dreamcast exclusive released only in Japan, it's not exactly a household name. Looking to change that, and bring the sixth-gen game back into the spotlight, is German studio KRITZELKRATZ 3000, which — with the backing of publisher ININ and original developer SUCCESS — has remade the 3D shoot-'em-up from the ground up. Featuring several modern quality-of-life upgrades, plus HD graphics and a brand new local co-op mode, it promises to merge the past and present when it launches digitally on consoles and PC on May 9.

Ahead of the game's release, I chatted with Andreas Scholl, technical director at KRITZELKRATZ 3000 and lead programmer for Rainbow Cotton, about what fans can expect from the remake."
