PS4 Neo vs. Xbox Scorpio, Which Upgrade Will Be More Powerful?

The PS4 Neo specs have been known for a while now but now it seems the new upgraded Xbox or the ‘Xbox Scorpio’ as the codename it goes by is now also set for release in 2017. Rumours point to Neo making it out before the end of they year with Microsoft’s upgrade coming in 2017. The question on people’s minds is which will be the more powerful upgrade? Why don't you wait and see?

Desperate much?

Kingthrash3602890d ago

I thought we were done with all this.
We that bored? Gotta bring up old rumors.
I know there isn't much coming until like August but man let's just wait until they are both revealed and specs are I'm the open before we start comparing them.

nX2890d ago

Not surprised this is coming from the cancer called thisgengaming.com, they probably need some new shoes so they came up with yet another clickbait article. A few days ago they predicted this GwG lineup

Ryse: Son of Rome
Lichdom Battlemage
Red Dead Redemption
Bioshock Infinite
The article reached 1050°

And what came out of it?

Goat Simulator
The Crew
Super Meat Boy
XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Reaching not even half the heat, simply ridiculous how these lowlifes are making money.

Rookie_Monster2890d ago

The info here just got updated.

Update:

Polygon have since shared information that Xbox Scorpio will have approximately 6 Tflops vs. PS4 Neo's 4.2 estimated Tflops

Ashlen2890d ago (Edited 2890d ago )

Update to update: Sony after seeing Microsoft's specs have upgraded there console to 6.2 tflops
Update to updated update: Microsoft after seeing Sony's upgrade have upgraded there system to 6.3 tflops
Update to update the updated update: Sony having seen Microsoft's upgrade to their upgraded upgrade and upgraded their upgrade to 6.4 tflops!

Aenea2890d ago

@Ashlen
You jest, but I wouldn't be too surprised if we get a yearly pissing contest between these two companies with yearly console upgrade... sigh...

darthv722890d ago

The first one to 10 Tflops wins... just like the old days of the race to 1GHz between Intel and AMD.

morganfell2890d ago

Someone dust off the chalkboard....more secret sauce...

@Kingthrash,

August won't reveal everything. Even if Scorpio is true, MS would not officially reveal a new Xbox that is more powerful coming in late 2017 and then look at you and say, "Buy the new slim that is launching now." They would be sabotaging their own sales.

And an inexpensive console that does 6TF? Is anyone buying this? Of course they are. The same people that thought ESRAM was the gateway to gaming heaven. Or was that Always Online? Or was it a hidden 2nd CPU? Or DX12? At what point do people exercise a modicum of reservation or skepticism?

What this amounts to, and I am laughing people cannot see it, is astroturfing designed to make gamers think twice about the Neo. In the end it really doesn't doesn't matter. Neo will launch this fall with PSVR a full year ahead of anything else. No one else ever heard the term "late to the party"?

2889d ago
dcbronco2889d ago

Morganfell the newer APUs launching next year offer a lot more power than the old technology thrown into current generation consoles. If they wait until 10nm dies come on line and include the Vega and Zen+ architectures 6 teraflops would be easy and cheaper than current generation launch cost.

Between efficiencies in the architectures and the die shrink power and heat would be reduced allowing the launch of a slim model on day one. By 2018 you're looking at Titan X power requiring less power than current consoles. So smaller everything, less heat, less packaging and less plastic. That's why they continue to create because it only gets cheaper and more powerful.

johndoe112112889d ago

@morganfell

What's really going to be interesting is if the scorpio does come out more powerful than the neo you'll automatically see an instant shift in most gaming sites and a particular fanbase and all of a sudden graphics and power will be important again.

DLConspiracy2889d ago

@Aenea

" You jest, but I wouldn't be too surprised if we get a yearly pissing contest between these two companies with yearly console upgrade... sigh..."

Ya know if all this is actually true. I wouldn't doubt it. The unfortunate bi product of all these people online bragging about resolutions, frames and powah. They heard ya loud and clear online. If the Oculus thing they assume might happen in the article actually happens then more power will be necessary in order to make it happen.

Again a lot of this is speculative. So who knows. I wasn't against PS Neo and I won't be against Xbox Scorpio.

rainslacker2889d ago (Edited 2889d ago )

@Ashlen

I have it on good authority that Nintendo NX will be 1 bajillion TFlops, and run on the blood of bunnies. Heard it from the guys in my bunny worshiping cult, and they're 100% reliable.

@darth

Ah...memories.

@dcbronco

True, new tech is more efficient, and more cost effective, but 6 TFlops still isn't going to come cheap. Maybe cheaper per TFlop, but still going to raise the overall cost pretty significantly.

@topic on hand

I really hope these rumors just get put to rest at E3. One way or another, they're annoying and distracting. I'd rather discuss them with known facts if they exist, or let the rumor die if it doesn't.

If it doesn't exist, I do wonder how the media is going to play it off though. Probably just say it's for next gen systems.

Majister-Ludi2889d ago

Yea coming from you lol. If it was the other way around I can see your comments now. Obviously Sony will be more powerful they always have been and always will be. God try not to be so fucking biased you pleb.

We can still discuss this as gamers right? The same way we discuss future games we want to see or games that haven't been announced yet. A lot of you guys are seriously becoming extremely jaded.

I personally think each one will have to be significantly powerful to not only output 4k but to run a VR device extremely well. And with that said I guess you have to look at the VR devices and which one requires more for it to work well.

The real question is when are we going to get the Hank Scorpio vs Neo references and pics!?

http://www.nme.com/images/2...

stuna12890d ago (Edited 2890d ago )

That would'nt be a way to truly guage which console would be more powerful. There are PC that are a lot more beefier than are required to run Oculus and Vive, but they don't necessarily have to be!

Right now Sony doesn't have to have the most powerful console, they've already gathered the marketshares as well as the mindshares. They also have something that Microsoft has a tough time competing against them with some of the best 1st party developers in the industry which translate to games.

Microsoft in my opinion aren't great at making Hardware but Sony are! Just like I don't think Sony are as adept at Software/Writing Code as Microsoft. Those things make a difference.

2890d ago
gangsta_red2890d ago

@StardustLemon

We discuss which console is the best, compare which game is better, who won E3, which fanbase is the worse, we discuss games that we never played which are also theoretical and based off of personal opinions and yet we can't discuss or debate this?

Aenea2890d ago

The whole VR thing for the Xbox Scorpio smells like a made up thing. Unless MS adds the same type of tech as that external PSVR box has, it will not work so well, not even if the new Xbox is faster than the new PS4...

Aenea2890d ago

But those things you mention are things we at least know something concrete about, you know, something that's not based on rumours?

This is all still rumours, we basically know nothing we can really discuss about...

(besides, discussing games that release in the future is also rather silly in my eyes, even tho it's based on some real info, it's still a lot of speculation)

ShadowKnight2890d ago

XBOX Scorpio would need a GTX 970 or equivalent to play the Oculus rift

senorfartcushion2889d ago

The inmates DO run this asylum

This is a PS4-based site now.

morganfell2889d ago

We can still discuss it but some people refuse to treat it as a rumor. They are running hard with it like the information came hurling out of a burning bush. I say go go gadget. And when it doesn't pan out, then what? You would think such persons would learn. We have some questionable leaked documentation on the Neo and even less substantial rumors on Scorpio but sites such as the one pandering this story are using terms like "approximately" and "estimated" as if they have seen some sort of blueprints.

I remember such stories when the rumor surfaced the PS4 would be using 4GB of DDR3. How did that pan out?

It should also be understood that Sony is soundly out in front this generation and that truism really has nothing to do with power. Less than 1% of gamers count pixels. The average gamer did not choose the PS4 over the X1 based on power. I love power discussions when we have facts. And we shouldn't ignore the way games run on any platform. But some people are already trying to preorder based on these separate rumors.

trooper_2889d ago

Why do we need to discuss a rumor? Nothing has been announced yet. It's speculation based on NOTHING.

Gazondaily2889d ago

Mate its daft. Its just a discussion and so much of the industry is talking about it BUT because this is putting Xbox in a better light we're seeing attacks launched on sites and people discussing the point.

Heck it could all turn out to be complete crap but to purge the discussion completely is downright moronic.

rainslacker2889d ago (Edited 2889d ago )

We've been discussing it for almost two months now with the Neo, and somewhat with MS, rumors, so I don't know where else the discussion has to go since all that can really be said has been said. I know when I tried discussing it before, most of anything I said was ignored as entitled or fanboyish, despite I was actually critical of it, but I'm a Sony fan....go figure.

Console wars are annoying enough, do we really need to have them over rumored specs which have absolutely no physical proof to anyone other than some journalists word?

It's rather peculiar how these rumors are flaring up when there is no real other news to report. So we have Polygon, Kotaku, and EG all reporting these unsubstantiated rumors, and Giantbomb, but everyone forgets the first three were all implicated in that media cabal that was the catalyst to start Gamergate. And no one finds these rumors suspicious in the least? I say, stop talking about it for a while, see if the sites realize no one is paying attention, then maybe they can get back to reporting news again, instead of doing some piss poor journalism and hiding behind a rumor tag.

@Septic

The industry isn't talking about it except to ask what it might be. If they're asking what it might be, then these aren't real things. Now your just making stuff up to try and make the rumors seem more valid. If these consoles were close to release, we'd have much more substantial rumor information to go on than the word of a journalist who says he has a substantial source....which incidentally is the only evidence we actually have right now.

r2oB2889d ago

Perhaps people do not want to talk about it because they are tired of discussing rumors of the Xbox One console becoming more powerful. First is was an extra GPU or something to that effect, then it was cloud computations, then it was unlocking DX 12. We are approaching 3 years into the console cycle and none of the above has come happened yet. At what point do you think its wise to discuss things with a bit more substantial information?

Xbox fans never want to discuss the FACT that the PS4 is more powerful. They always dismiss it, or downplay it as unnoticeable or meaningless. Yet Xbox fans want to discuss rumors that the new Xbox One will be more powerful?

The funny thing is people are even saying they dont want to discuss it, they are saying lets wait until more information is released.

ITPython2889d ago

None of these new consoles are doing any serious, if any, 4k gaming. Even my recently built $1400 PC (this is including taxes, Windows 10 pro, cables and accessories) cant even pull off all ultraultra maxed settings on RoTR at 1080p without having some massive framerate issues. I can get some very impressive performance and visuals if I don't use any AA, but its quite jaggy. But I wouldn't even dare try quadrupling my resolution to 4k, in order to run at 60fps the visuals would need to look like an SNES game.

However fully functional 4k blu Ray and media playback are a certainty. But that is hardly demanding, they just need the latest HDMI spec.

Best case scenario is a very lightweight indi title running at 4k. But please, enough with all the 4k gaming talk with these new consoles. Clearly too many around here have no idea the raw brute strength required for meaningful 4k gaming.

Xbox codename Scorpio should be more powerful if Microsoft is smart (and they are)

Phunkydiabetic12890d ago

Oh yes, the Xbox One has shown just how smart Microsoft REALLY is alright...

sammarshall1022889d ago

@Phunky Xbox One turned out great and now Microsoft just has to eliminate the resolution debate with Scorpio

LamerTamer2889d ago (Edited 2889d ago )

No the xbone did not turn out great, the hardware is way too underpowered, it is crap. Their big *exclusive* game QB is only 720p, that is pathetic at this late date.

Good that they figured it out and are finally releasing the console they should have originally.

Phunkydiabetic12889d ago

Dude. What Microsoft tainted rock have you been living under? The Xbox One has been utterly dominated for the past three years. I literally every aspect. Graphics. Power. Sales. Games (exclusive and otherwise).

MRMagoo1232890d ago

I would say neither because they are rumours that I feel aren't going to be true.

Aenea2890d ago

Meh, Sony's conference is after the one of MS, if MS announces a 6 Tflop console, Sony will match it or go past it, haha...

I laugh because I find it all still a tad weird, the AMD FinFet thing makes sense, the only reason I can believe both Sony and MS might release a mid-gen upgrade (tho 2017 feels more like next-gen to me), but since they probably will end up using the same base components I doubt the difference will be that big, if it's even real, that is...

Ck1x2889d ago

Sony won't be able to go past it, because if the rumors have a shread of truth the Neo is launching this year and Scorpio next. Sony can't just magically throw a 6Tflop chip into the Neo this year that Amd won't have on the market until late next year.

starchild2888d ago

These kinds of things are in plans for a long time. You can't just change everything on a whim. Some things can change fairly quickly, but a lot of things must follow a certain course.

Letthewookiewin2890d ago

Friggin MS! What a slap in the face to its loyal customers! I can't believe this! Oh wait..... Xboners want this? But I thought they were absolutely against the idea of the PS4 Neo? I can't keep track anymore, MS even has their fans spinning pr for them.

Gol3m2889d ago

You've got them there mate. Flip flopping as usual

LamerTamer2889d ago

They are the ones that supposedly couldn't see the difference between 720p and 1080p and/or didn't care. It was all about "online, updates, and user interfaces".

Now all of a sudden graphics and resolution are a big deal now that the scorpio is more powerful than the Neo.

Flip-flop.

trooper_2889d ago

Flip flopping like fish out of water.

Gazondaily2889d ago

Ahahaha wait wait...You're accusing Xbox fans for flip flopping??

Did Playstation Nation invent a time machine or something?

When rumours of an upgradeable console from MS came out you lot started talking about the destruction of the games industry.

When Neo came about, the same people then eased off. Saying, oh it doesn't take anything away from the PS4. Greatness Awaits.

Now that MS could have a potentially more powerful Xbox than PS4, you lot are saying that power wont matter?

Let's get this straight. YOU guys said power does matter. So will you play on the new Xbox more than the PS4 for multiplats if the rumours are true (which I am still VERY dubious about)?

I have always stated that power snd resolution matters. Heck I can back that up.

BUT if this is true, there is going to be A LOT of crow to serve...none of it halal. 😂

rainslacker2889d ago

Nope, the Xbox fan boys were/are some of the most ardent supporters of the Neo. My guess would be because they wanted to make it a criticism later, but maybe I'm just not putting enough faith that they actually were interested.

Ck1x2889d ago

It actually makes more sense for Microsoft to go this route than Sony given the current position they are in. I see people saying that power wasn't or isn't the reason that PS4 is outselling the XbOne, but Sony themselves released a poll that showed Resolution, superior 3rd party games and faster hardware were the top reasons many picked PS4 over XbOne. Not sure why people are flip flopping over this issue when the bulk of 3rd party game comparisons between the two are almost always highlighting resolution and frame rates.

starchild2888d ago

Huh? It hasn't seemed that way to me. When the Neo rumors were swirling I saw a lot of the Xbox fans saying they were all for upgraded consoles. Sure, I saw a couple saying they were against the idea, and maybe they still are, but I also can name quite a number of well known Sony fans on this site that were against the idea.

Best quote I've seen so far:

"New Xbox will flop more? PS Neo will use floppies? You are taking flip flops on holiday?

Pointless speculation."

Lmao

ThyMasterDebater2889d ago

As someone whos is in the Computer science field.. when reading this from Kotaku

"Microsoft is aiming to get Scorpio running at 6 teraflops, which we’ve also heard from one source. (5-6 is what we heard.) Sources have insisted that Scorpio’s exact specs have not yet been finalized, though"

"We hear that the folks at Xbox have yet to finalize the specs for 2017’s Scorpio, although they briefed third-party publishers on the device during a secret event last week, according to a source"

This is very much a reaction to Sonys upgrade. If they are just starting to doll out tech specs now. They are aiming for xmas 2017. I would assume they will reach 5 or a bit more in a year and start production shortly after. Price will be higher as it will need some beefy specs.

pcz2889d ago

i think the NEO name suit xbox more. i mean, i always thought microsoft were inspired by the matrix when creating the original xbox operating system/interface, with the green graphics. even now i always associate th green with the matrix.

xbox neo sounds better.

I never would've thought we'd get upgrades this early but either way, I'm pretty sure I'll pick up both at some point so I'm not all that bothered. PS4 Neo for PSVR and Xbox Scorpio for Oculus VR if you don't have/want a PC rig

Fin_The_Human2889d ago

You might be on to something.

People forget that FaceBook owns Oculus and MS has shares in Face Book so it benefit MS to make sure that the Oculus is a success.

boing12889d ago (Edited 2889d ago )

Well, Sony held developer conference this week. They showed infamous second son in 4k on new hardware. New gpu is over twice as fast. Every game releasing after September will have to have support for both. There are also incoming changes to PSN accounts. SDK is getting awesome update. There are no requirements regarding at what res and fps game has to run on new hardware.

starchild2888d ago

I don't believe it. A GPU only "over twice as fast" as the one in the PS4 would not be able to run Infamous Second Son in 4k.

boing12888d ago

GPU isn't the only thing that's updated.

Make your next GPU upgrade AMD as these latest-gen Radeon cards receive a special promotion

AMD has long been the best value option if you're looking for a new GPU. Now even their latest Radeon RX 7000 series is getting cheaper.

Father__Merrin1d 6h ago

Best for the money is the Arc cards

just_looken1d 5h ago

In the past yes but last gen amd has gotten cheaper and there new cards are on the horizon making 6k even cheaper.

The arc cards are no longer made by intel but asus/asrock has some the next line battlemage is coming out prices tbd.

Do to the longer software development its always best to go amd over intel if its not to much more money even though intel is a strong gpu i own 2/4 card versions.
