How Powerful Is PS4 Neo Really?

Based on leaked specs, how much of a jump will Neo offer?

The gap between power of the ps4 and neo is nowhere near as big as the ps4 and ps3 gap. The power difference with the neo will allow you to play games at 60fps@1080p on all games might go more resolution depending on the game but it will be almost identical to the ps4 version just the double amount of frames and better shadows etc.

Let's face it theses consoles was underpowered when they came out I don't think Sony and Microsoft had the confidence in the console market liked they used to so they went cheap. Sony couldn't take the risk Microsoft went down the tv route Sony got lucky.
Now on the other hand Sony knows there is still a massive market for consoles i.e 40 million ps4 sales in 2.5 years it's crazy. So I think they have had litteraly no choice in making the ps4 neo and these are the reasons why,

Gamers have been mupping all this generation about how e3 reveals don't look as good as the final product (Ubisoft) and they are only a couple of games that can achieve 1080p at 60fps.
It's all 30fps and all devs going for the 1080p sweet spot.
Well all this is because the consoles are not powerful enough so Sony have been listening lets give them a ps4 that can achieve 1080p and 60fps.
And on the other hand VR is coming Sony need a more powerful console to compete with the other VR machines out there. It will work on the ps4 but neo will make VR that little bit better
And finally the NX is coming out and who knows it might be powerful and Sony answer is the Neo so basically with this new ps4 system Sony is hitting 3 birds with one stone and I think they have had no choice to do what they are doing.

We will all find out at e3 it's all speculation but I wouldn't be surprised if neo was at e3.

You really believe Sony got lucky?

seanpitt232916d ago

I believe if Microsoft went down the power route and dropped kinnect that TV bs and charged what they did it would be a different story with sales probably neck and neck not 2 to 1 and this is coming from a ps guy I have never bought a Microsoft console. Microsoft made big mistakes with the x1 and Sony learned their lesson from ps3 but Sony did get lucky that Microsoft chose the route they did.

ShadowKnight2916d ago (Edited 2915d ago )

So next gen it shouldn't be no excuse for Microsoft then. I'm looking forward to see if Microsoft trademark will be as popular as Sony in different countries. Let's see if Microsoft can keep up with sales in other countries and not just in the US.

Drake7142916d ago

they also want to add the 4K UHD Blu Ray player to PS4 which other companies have started to sell. Sony doesn't want to be late to the party.

DarkZane2916d ago

Games won't be at 60fps. They will just have better visuals and still run at 30fps. Why don't people realize developers will prioritize visuals over framerate most of the time because it's what sell.

dumahim2916d ago

Because Sony has mandated the framerate must be better than it is in normal mode.

To me, it seems the easiest thing to do for Neo mode is to up the framerate instead of better shadows, better textures, or other improved effects.

Deeke2916d ago

I dunno man. The PS4 uses about an HD 7850 - 7870 GPU. If the specs are right, then the PS4 Neo matches a customized derivative of AMD's new 14nm Polaris 10 Ellesmere GPU. That's an absolutely massive jump between the two GPUs.

http://wccftech.com/amd-pol...

Yes, those specs are based on discrete desktop-grade GPUs, but still. It's a leap.

rainslacker2915d ago (Edited 2915d ago )

I'd say look at the ROP's and texture units before looking at Terraflops. Those two things are much more important when judging the difference between GPU's, whereas Teraflops allows you to simply measure the efficiency of the chip in comparison to the overall setup, and can vary based on numerous factors. I have a hard time believing they'd be using a Polaris level GPU in a new console given the prohibitive costs. If they are using a Polaris GPU, I wouldn't expect it out this year.

The rumors so far seem to indicate that the ROPS and testure units will basically be doubled, and while I looked it up before, and can't remember, nor care to look it up now, the Polaris GPU actually is more than double the what the current GPU has. It fell in line with a current GPU from AMD, ROPS/TU included, that ran about $250-300 PC card, but again, can't remember the exact model.

I did all the work to look at it closer in another comment about a week ago. Unfortunately, finding old comments is hard on N4G now because of the way it's set up, so if I come across it later, I'll edit and post what I found.

@rainslacker

Yeah I'm not sure either way, but I based the info on this http://www.techpowerup.com/...

Of course on one knows what's inside the PS4 Neo, and the leaks could be wrong. It does seem pretty insane though...packing in such a dramatic upgrade in a mid-cycle refresh. I was surprised myself!

Espangerish2916d ago

I 100% agree with you. Years of endless complaints for 60fps and 1080p. Sony offer the hardware to do the job and get more complaining.

Literally can't win sometimes. I'm really looking forward to this Neo and will preorder it as soon as possible.

ShowanW2916d ago

The PS3 is more powerful (CPU wise at least)

Give the PS3 the same amount of RAM and same GPU... it would destroy the PS4 in every conceivable way...

Mastadope422916d ago

Instructions per cycle, out of order operations....Please research

Ouch! The lack of punctuation is hurting everyone's eyes!

GordonKnight2916d ago

Let's face it. The biggest reason for PS4 neo is VR. It's a really good move, because PSVR has the headset. The problem it was going to be held back by the PS4. This really makes me believe the excluvise games for neo will be VR games. If you want the true PSVR experience, then you will need the neo. Imho

XanderZane2915d ago

So gamers are going to run out this holiday and buy BOTH the PS4 Neo ($400) and the PSVR ($400), plus $60 games as well? Have fun with that. No way in hell I'll be paying over $1000 to enjoy the best version of PSVR this holiday.

nirwanda2915d ago

Ps4/xbone were limited by EU laws that dictated how energy efficient they had to be, which is why they focused on the Gpu and the cpu was clocked at quite a low.

I really don't care long as launch models affordable now.
with that being said : im sure SONY will announce a price drop for those still on the fence this E3.

yewles12917d ago

If Neo comes true, I hope they upgraded to Puma...

Dragonking0072916d ago (Edited 2916d ago )

Amd already said there next gpu are settled for consoles so not just ps4 going to get the upgrade we can expect the NX to get it aswell whether people dont believe it or not.

yewles12916d ago

I'm actually talking about the CPU, in which Puma is an improved version of Jaguar.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen2916d ago

A dead horse can only be beaten so much before you'll need to find another dead horse to beat on.

Aenea2916d ago

Indeed, just for this stupid Neo crap I wish it was E3 already so we can get it behind is...

trooper_2916d ago

It's really dumb. People should wait until Sony announces something.

Fallout 4 is now available on next-gen consoles, but PS Plus users might be left disappointed

Probably won't happen for PS+ since Sony makes a clear distinction between a PS4 game and a PS5 game, unlike PC and Xbox where it is not a specific device game (It's now always an Xbox game).

So to make the PS5 game of fallout 4 available. Bethesda would need to renegotiate the complete deal with Sony.
hence why there's often only the PS4 version of the game available on PS+.

Let's hope Bethesda and Sony can arrive to term quickly.

P_Bomb19m ago

In that same link, they talked to further support who said PS+ owners aren’t eligible. What a load of BS! The upgrade worked just fine for FF7R. I was looking forward to this. 😞

I think a hard copy should be relatively cheap at this point.

REVIEW: Sand Land faithfully adapts to game form a lesser known Akira Toriyama creation | Showmetech

From Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama, Sand Land is a fun adaptation of the manga and anime in videogame form. For all of its simplicity and repetition, it's a beautiful interpretation of the source material.
