HBO launched 40 years ago this month — November 8, 1972, to be precise. It occurred to me that I’ve been writing about TV for fifteen years, film and pop culture for more than twenty; and during that period, HBO’s provocations and innovations have been among the few constants on this beat. Since there are milestones in every decade, I’ve decided to narrow my own list of HBO’s greatest achievements to just ten. The list is in reverse order is:
Fight For Paradise Review: This reality show is nothing new but there are so many uncomfortable moments that will definitely give you the ick.
Brigands: The Quest For Gold Review: The Italian drama follows a group of brigands, embarking on a journey to reclaim power and some hidden gold.
Dinner with the Parents Review: It's a family comedy series following the Langers, who often turn their family dinners into a disruptively chaotic affair.
The Sopranos was top spot for me...at least until they got to the odd season of him in a coma and then the very anti-climatic final season.
Another great show was Carnivale. Sadly it was cancelled after just 2 seasons but that show was so well done - I hated that it ended after a cliff hanger. Maybe Netflix can pick this one up too.
