This morning the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released their nominations of 2011 film. This will be the 84th ceremony for the Academy. The show is planned to broadcast on February 26th hosted by ABC. The widely popular program will be aired nationwide and to a plethora of countries across the globe. Here are the nominations.
Secondly, no Drive? I have yet to see it, but all the buzz it got and seeing how many sites and people named it their movie of the year, yet it gets not even a nomination (except for sound editing - that doesn't count)? Odd.
Also sucks to see Trent Reznor got no love. And obviously this won't be the year DiCaprio finally gets his Oscar. And only 2 nominees for Original Song? That's rather odd too. Not to mention, Shame didn't receive a single nomination (again, it's one I haven't seen but it's received tons of praise that I'd figure at least a nomination somewhere).
Fun little fact: This is the first time since the Animated Feature category began that Pixar has failed to receive an Oscar nomination when they had an eligible film. Granted they didn't get nominations in 2002 or 2005, but that's because they didn't release a movie that year. So, in other words, Cars 2 is the first Pixar movie to not be nominated for Best Animated Feature since the category was introduced.
As for the nominations I see presented here I'm suddenly reminded why I only went to the theater twice in the last year. The fact that The Academy left Andy Serkis out of the noms is hardly surprising given how full of crap they are. His performance as Caesar was nothing short of spectacular and deserves to be rewarded. Seeing Tin Tin left out was a bit surprising to me as well especially since all I've heard from everyone is how much they enjoyed the movie and how incredible the animation was.
Looks like it's going to be another year I don't watch the show because I just don't care about a vast majority of the movies.
I appreciate all the discussion occurring.
It's unfortunate the Oscars did such a lackluster job this year. We could go on and on about how many actors/actresses/ and films deserved to be rewarded.
Alas, we must live with what has transpired.
On the up side ... at least picking the winners should be a tad more difficult, considering the obscurity of some of the Academy's choices.
On the down side ... Oscar nominated Transformers: Dark of the Moon & Real Steel? Dear God.
Thank you for reading everyone.

It was just a flat-out snub.
We should all agree that most of us here haven't seen and or heard of "A Cat In Paris" or "Chico & Rita". That's not to say they aren't of value, it's just peculiar.
No surprise on the Pixar front.
As for the two animated features mentioned, I have heard of them. However, I have seen neither. It's actually nice to see them go non-mainstream. Though I can't attest to if either is actually deserving of being nominated.
As for Pixar, I liked Cars 2 despite others ragging on it. Though don't think it would warrant a nomination. But I'm imagining Pixar will be right back as the front-runner at next year's Oscars given that Brave looks to be quality.
I am glad they acknowledged Nick Nolte for his performance in Warrior because it was outstanding...JL is right about the animated section and about the muical score too...that is almost unbelievable.
I'm so far behind this year. I still have to see a ton of those movies nominated here. Got a LOT of cramming to do between now and then.
Can't believe Gosling, Serkis and Fassbender got robbed of any nominations. Same goes for Albert Brooks.
Hell, I'm just pissed to see tons of BETTER movies getting the shaft. Drive, Warrior, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, 50/50 and even Girl with the Dragon Tattoo are all more worthy than The Help, War Horse and Extremely Loud/Incredibly Close.
Also surprised Tintin didn't get an animation nod. Best of the year by a long mile.
At least Terrence Malick is getting some love. Really glad to see Tree of Life on there.
EDIT: @Broke ahh nice, i gotta one of those!
Fassbender was good in Shame even though it's basically just him fucking or walking around naked. The movie itself was complete shit. It goes in my worse movies list for last year: We Need To Talk About Kevin, Carnage (can't think of the other ones at the movie)
I enjoyed The Artist but can't see it as the best film of last year. The Descendants seems like the one that'll win but the Academy probably want's to shake things up (Jonah Hill really?) instead being predictable.
A Separation will win for best foreign. Incredibly well done.
I'm surprised The Guard wasn't nominated
I personally felt the lack of action but what little there was it made up for it with just how brutal the violence was. But it was artisticly used and wasn't overdone!
The 80's vibe from the credits font, his satin jacket, and the AMAZING 80'sish soundtrack... it was a total badass throwback movie!
I could see how the movie was predictable to a degree... but the ride through it all was awesome and didn't at all play out like I had thought!
Wish the Pizzaria scene would've went down differently... at least I know everyone expected it to!
And why surprised about The Guard? What would you have nominated it for? I mean I liked it and found it really funny, but I really don't see it being deserving of a nomination in any of the categories (especially not Best Picture if that's what you were implying). Maybe if they had a comedy category, but they don't, so no.
Bridesmaids is up for best screenplay and The Guard isn't? That's like putting The Hangover against The Social Network and saying that the Hangover had a better script.
I don't understand why Bridesmaids is getting so much critical acclaim. It's humor is on par with The Hangover, and yet it is up for several Oscars (whilst The Hangover was up for nothing back in 2010, no wait it was nominated for one, the most prestigious of awards; Original Song). I enjoyed both films but all the critical acclaim is baffling.
It's even up for Best Screenplay?! The Guard is a far better written comedy & doesn't rely on gross out humor for cheap laughs. And what about the fat chick from Mike & Molly, Mellissa McCarthy, getting nom'd for best supporting actress, she coasted through that film solely relying on fat & fart jokes. Brendan Glesson is on the chubby side, and he was able be funny, without shitting his pants and harking on about being fat and not getting laid. Maybe the voters thought they were being hip & cool by voting for it. I dunno.
But hey, at least Nick Nolte got some love for his performance in Warrior.
That being said, if they wanted to go with a comedy, The Guard was indeed much better on all fronts in comparison to Bridesmaids. So if the Academy wanted to make a "we pay attention to comedies" points, that would've made a better selection.
However, I really don't think even that should have been getting any nominations. Not in light of all the competition in all those categories.
P.S. Gleeson had me laughing my ass off in that movie and he did great. But he did rely on stereotypes for his comedy a lot in there (ie relying pretty much on racist and anti-American jokes)
I've seen all his movies except for The Notebook, which is funny because that's what made him huge.
He has a pretty good track record with movies lately. I just wish he would go out of his usual character. He just keeps playing the somewhat quiet charming guy who turns all bronx when he's pissed.
The Guard is one of those movies right up the Academy's alley. A best actor nom seemed appropriate.
Also, why is Korean cinema always overlooked? I think most of it surpasses what's coming out of Hollywood nowadays.
A best actor nom for The Guard? I don't see that at all. Again, I really liked the movie, but I think there were much more deserving roles that should be nominated over that (DiCaprio didn't even get a nod here).
No I'm kidding. I'm just having a go. I actually haven't seen Hugo yet but I really want to. I does look like it could be some good fun and quite to ode to cinema in itself.
Gleason could've got a nomination for THE GUARD. A funny movie that's been getting overlooked.
DiCaprio wasn't deserving of a nomination. His performance was average at best - and the film was worse.
It doesn't surprise me that DRIVE was predictable for you ... considering your read the book. Gosling has tremendous range. His performances in just HALF NELSON, BLUE VALENTINE, THE IDES OF MARCH, and DRIVE - are living testaments to his talents.
I haven't seen SHAME - but your generalization and likely oversimplification of the narrative is a bit distasteful.
-- Kevin is certainly overrated and not all that impressive, though.
Not sure how we can compare Hoffman and Gosling - two entirely different actors.
Glad to see love for TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY.
