The Collider:
The Cuban zombie comedy Juan of the Dead played at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival and now it has been picked up for a North American release by Focus Features’ new digital distribution arm, Focus World. The eponymous character is 40-year-old slacker who makes zombie lemonade out of zombie lemons when a zombie outbreak hits Cuba and he’s able to make some scratch by slaying families’ fresh undead. Some critics have seen it as a political allegory, but director Alejandro Brugues says its commentary on Cuba is how its citizens manage to find a way to deal with poverty.
Sean of The Daily Rotation wrote, "With the zombie genre growing seemingly more popular every year, all across the globe, I suppose it’s inevitable that every country will come out with at least one zombie movie to satisfy the worldwide hunger. After last year’s The Dead from Africa, and countless classics from places like Italy, New Zealand, and the US, it’s fitting that Cuba has become the latest country to join in on the resurgent popularity of the zombie movie."
FMV says: "Clever, hilarious, gory and great fun - this is a welcome addition to the zombie genre. Other filmmakers will need to up their game if they are to produce anything close to this standard."
I believe it's going to be released in the US also...at least I hope it is..I would like to see it...I think it's going to be very funny.
THR Heat Vision:
The Havana-set Zombie movie opens March 13 in Miami before expanding to other markets.
Alejandro Brugues’ Juan of the Dead was voted the Lexus Audience Award at the 29th annual Miami International Film Festival, which concluded Sunday.
The festival, produced by Miami Dade College, presented its top jury prizes to Cristián Jiménez’s Bonsái, Bart Layton’s The Imposter and Kenya Márquez’s Expiration Date.
I knew this was going to be a hit just because it's a zombie movie. It doesn't matter what language it's in as long as it's got zombies.
Don't know what they're thinking on this one. I guess if you think on the line of Shaun of the Dead....then maybe.
At first when I read the name I thought, oh a parody of a film that was making fun of zombie films. Then I read the description and thought Okay maybe not. Then I watched the trailer, I saw no lemonade and yeah it's pretty much like Shaun of the Dead.
