LRA writes: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a true return to form for director David Fincher. Not that his recent films have been bad, quite the contrary actually, but he seemed to be straying further and further away from the more pulpy genres that have littered most of his career. The Social Network and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button were fine films and showed that Fincher was maturing as a director, not just in his liberal use of fancy camera movements but also in telling stories that had much more dramatic weight behind them than his previous works. My personal favorites of his however still include Seven, Fight Club, The Game and Zodiac. Those may not be the type of films that go on to win awards but I'll be damned if they aren't entertaining. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo falls more in line with those handful of films artistically, story wise and thematically which I absolutely love. David Fincher has returned to the world of pulp entertainment and I couldn't be happier.

To me I expected Fincher to do his thing what really surprised me was Rooney Mara. Her performance was captivating in a very somber, pitiful, way. The character shined through her and I think that is a rarity in film now days. I was impressed by all the performances but Mara shined the brightest.
This film was nothing as I expected. It was paced very differently form what I'm used to in modern Hollywood films. It was intelligent in a way that didn't care if you were keeping up or not and I thought that was cool. Fincher never took the time to explain things to you he just let them play out. If that was done in any other way I would have been annoyed, but the way he did it had so much class and craftsmanship I couldn't help but love almost every moment of the film. The rape scenes were hard to watch. Even though they didn't really show much, the psychology of it left me feeling uneasy. The film doesn't hold back and it is unabashedly itself, very much like it's tattooed main character.

I completely agree with the score and I thought this was a great review of the movie. It pointed out a few things I hadn't thought about before.
Although, I disagree about Craig's character. Mikael gives the film it's methodical feel while Lisbeth ads to it's character, if Lisbeth was the only main charter I think the film would have felt too erratic. Although I think Lisbeth is the most engaging character I've seen in years, I think that Mikael grounds her; he is the white canvas that lets Lisbeth's subtle shades shine.
