18 Films Submitted to Oscar’s Best Animated Feature Race; What Can Win?

Movieline says

There’s good news and… well, more good news about this year’s race for the Best Animated Feature Oscar. First, the number of submissions — 18 — exceeds the minimum of 16 required for a year of five nominees. (Last year only netted 15 submissions, and thus three nominees, as if anybody was going to knock off Toy Story 3 anyway.) And with a soft year for the likes of both Pixar and DreamWorks Animation, that means the field is pretty wide open for the first time in a while. What can win?

Here are your options:

· The Adventures of Tintin
· Alois Nebel
· Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked
· Arthur Christmas
· Cars 2
· A Cat in Paris
· Chico & Rita
· Gnomeo & Juliet
· Happy Feet Too
· Hoodwinked Two! Hood Vs. Evil
· Kung Fu Panda 2
· Mars Needs Moms
· Puss in Boots
· Rango
· Rio
· The Smurfs
· Winnie the Pooh
· Wrinkles

I haven;t seen most of the movies here but I would have to say The Smurfs (yes I quite enjoyed it). I suspect it'll go to Tin Tin though.

judoka24134551d ago

Lol the smurfs doesnt deserve an oscar!

Blink_444552d ago

Rio or tin tin is going to win I'm guessing.

Crazay4552d ago

That's where my money would lie if I were a betting man.

Sahil4551d ago

Rio, for me.. loved the movie!

darfreeze4552d ago

I'm sure Pixars won't win this year so it's either Tin tin or Winnie the Pooh for me.

JL4552d ago

Yea, if I was a betting man Tintin or Winnie the Pooh are the ones I'd expect to win.

I didn't hate Cars 2 (I really enjoyed the first one despite the bashing it gets). But Cars 2 wasn't nearly as good as the first.

Crazay4552d ago

I despised the original Cars almost as much as Wall-e. I thought both movies were uninspired and just down right boring.

Bereaver4551d ago

@crazy Don't knock Wall-e~

Prophet-Gamer4551d ago

Personally I liked Cars 1 but I kind of hate Cars 2 mostly because it focused almost exclusively on Mater and I really, really don't like Mater. He's too annoying and not funny.

r214552d ago

tin tin, why? cause its tin tin and you dont want to mess with tin tin!

Sahil4551d ago

coz it was pretty good :)

Some of the best animated films in the world are from Japan.
Sad that there is no "room" for them. Apparently Poland & Spain are given consideration though. Is it due to the Japanese studios not trying to submit or some stipulation that rules out any "mature" themed animated films.

Arietty The Borrower, Mardock Scramble, Legend of the Millennium Dragon all easily contend.

There is no Toy Story 3 caliber animated films this year from the US, so instead of looking for more international content films like Hoodwinked Two! Hood Vs. Evil and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked are up for best animated feature???

The Oscars are a joke and every year they get worse.
Maybe after Summer Wars (which was a brilliant film) was submitted and didn't get nominated last year Japanese studios don't feel it's worth even bothering with.

BTW my money is on Rango from what i've watched.

Surprised that movie the illusionist isnt on this list.

Nvm that was released in 2010 thought it was this year

Spirited Away (Japanese) won Best Animated Feature in 2002. Howl's Moving Castle was nominated in 2005. Though that did lose to Wallace and Gromit (another foreign animation). Several other foreign ones have been nominated from countries other than US or Japan. Movies like Persepolis, The Secret of Kells and The Illusionist. Though, Ponyo did get snubbed back when it came out.

By the way, there are several foreign movies on this here as well: Alois Nebel, A Cat in Paris, Chico & Rita and Wrinkles are all foreign.

I'm pretty sure studios have to submit their movies for consideration to the Academy. So maybe Japan just isn't submitting movies? I'm not sure. I do know they have their own Oscars of sorts over there though. And the ones listed here haven't been nominated. This is just saying these are the ones studios have turned in for consideration. The Academy will laugh off movies like Chipwrecked I'm sure.

@Blink The Illusionist was one of the nominees last year.
