Emily Watson Talks True Horror Story Oranges and Sunshine, Trailer Exclusive
Check out the new trailer for Oranges and Sunshine (below), the first film from director Jim Loach—son of Ken Loach. Cohen Media will release the film, which has already opened in the UK, from producers Camilla Bray, Iain Canning and Emile Sherman of The King’s Speech, into the award season fray in October (reviews here). Emily Watson (Breaking the Waves) stars in this true story, adapted by Rona Munro from the memoir Empty Cradles by Nottingham social worker Margaret Humphreys. In the 80s she discovered that in the 50s and 60s the UK deported thousands of abandoned children, as young as four, to abusive work homes in Australia. She challenged the authorities in order to expose this miscarriage of justice and reunite thousands of families.

Now playing in theaters is director Steven Spielberg‘s fantastic new movie, War Horse. Based on the Award winning play (which is based on Michael Morpurgo’s book) and set during World War I, War Horse tells the story of “the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert (Jeremy Irvine), who tames and trains him.” And don’t just take my word for it, early screenings have been very positive and the drama is heading into Oscar season with very positive buzz, especially after the National Board of review named War Horse one of the best 10 films of the year. The film also stars Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Peter Mullan, Niels Arestrup, Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, Patrick Kennedy, and Toby Kebbell. I like period films but I'm not sure if I'll go see this at the theater or not....still trying to decide. I really don't like to cry at the movies. This one looks like I would cry...and I love horses...I'd probably sob like a baby.
Oranges and Sunshine is an equally confronting and tender story about loss of identity of abuse of power, as told through the heroic actions of a secular saint who stood up to those who had no voice.
Possibly the largest recent social scandal to rock Australian and British was the “Child Migrant Scheme”, where thousands of poor and orphaned children were shipped unaccompanied from Britain to Australia, where they were promised a land of “oranges and sunshine” but instead received systematic abuse from secular and religious institutions.
Think of the children!
This is actually and interesting story...I may have to see this. I hadn't heard about this movie but now that I have I do have some interest in it.
