LRA: 13 Assassins - Blu-ray Review

LRA writes: Takashi Miike has been hailed as a legendary filmmaker. I honestly never knew why. I admit to not seeing all of his filmography but the couple I had seen, Ichi the Killer and Audition, didn't exactly set my world on fire. I found Ichi to be a somewhat clumsy film that seemed to be going for an over the top exploitation vibe. Audition's big selling point was the last 20 to 30 minutes of that film and while I agree that finale is pretty shocking, it was and still is the only thing I took away from the experience. In other words Miike had not done anything to win me over as he apparently did with his fan base (working at a DVD store introduced me to many Ichi fans). So when I started hearing grand things about his new film 13 Assassins I kind of shrugged my shoulders to anyone that told me how great it was. I have never been so proud to be wrong though in my expectations. This is what I have come to consider Takashi Miike's crowning jewel, every director has at least one great film in him and this is his.

I did really enjoy this one. I didn't think it was a masterpiece necessarily, but definitely was enjoyable.

I also feel the same about Miike as you mention. I don't necessarily get the "legendary". Ichi just flat out sucked. Sorry to any fans, but it did. It was almost as bad as that "Human Centipede" that people raved about.

I really enjoyed Audition, though. Yes, the best is that third act, but I enjoyed the movie. I still would mark it as one of the more scary (in a haunting/disturbing kinda way) movies I've seen.

Another good one is Sukiyaki Western Django. I loved that movie. It was pretty damn awesome. For me, I think Miike needs to stick to doing stuff like that and 13 Assassins.

While I haven't seen all his work, I have seen several and those three are the only ones I like.

... I believe there's about 20 minutes orso missing that was in the japanese cut. Which is why I won't be buying this. |Sadly, cause the movie looks like a classic.

...but just like Kurosawa's classics over 50 years ago, we in the west are deemed 'unfit' to experience the complete movie(!)

While I cannot comment on the quality of the original cut I did take it into consideration when applying my score to it. If there is a better version out there then there wasn't any way I could give it a perfect score and with the deleted scenes they had on the disc I could see how it would have been a more complete movie with them retained.

However, there were a few of those deleted scenes that were so out of left field (one in particular) that I don't know if the film would have benefited from having it left in. In any case, yes if you are a fan of the longer cut then by all means import it (blu-rays have no region coding to my knowledge) but I loved this movie with or without those extra scenes and felt as though it's current length was just right at over 2 hours long. I suppose if you need those extra scenes to enjoy it then so be it.

Perhaps calling it a masterpiece is a bit of an overstatement but I was just floored by how well it was made and I love films of this type so there might have been some personal bias in there for me.

But I still hold my ground on this being one of the best films released this year.

I thought 13 Assassins was... okay...

I think there was a lot left unanswered and the combat seemed fairly hectic rather than choreographed. I understand that the last part is common in many similar movies, but I expected better considering the focus and team behind it.

The mystical element at the end was definitely from out of nowhere (yeah, that sword did go through his throat).

I haven't seen it yet but I do plan on it because I usually enjoy movie like this. Now that I've read the discussion on it I know I will be seeing it.
