Slashfilm Early Reaction - Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class

On Saturday, I had the opportunity to see Matthew Vaughn‘s X-Men: First Class. Over the last year, we’ve heard about how the film had morphed from the original concept of X-Men Origins: Magneto into a prequel/reboot in the same style of what JJ Abrams did for the Star Trek franchise. I can confirm that the completed film is exactly both of these things. It fits right in with Bryan Singer’s first two X-Men films and is probably the second best film in the series next to X-Men United. And I say that with a certain but of nostalgia for the sequel, as it came out at a time when comic book adaptations didn’t strive to be anything more than popcorn fun. But the more and more I think about it, the more and more I think Vaughn’s film might have surpassed it.

Sounds pretty positive and I'm not surprised, this film looks stunning.

Wow, this makes me feel a lot better. While I was looking forward to this film a lot, I wasn't sure how well they'd pull it off. I am very happy to hear this report though.

As good, if not better than X2? I'm totally ready for that!

I have to admit, I was pretty worried about this movie. Nothing I've seen so far has impressed me at all really. This is some relieving news, though. Glad it actually has turned out good.

The idea of Fox producing a good X-men film is making me go through withdrawals.

This was the superhero film of 2011 that I was most looking forward to seeing. I'm delighted to learn that the early buzz is confirming my early anticipation. I'll be watching it on opening day.

Did you get a chance to see Thor? I wasn't looking forward to it, but it deserves the praise it's received.

Yes! Thor was a very solid film. I enjoyed the artistic embellishment, the Shakespearean underpinnings, the character focus, and the mythological accuracy; not to mention, it was entertaining. If you want to check out my full review (I gave it a 7.5 out of 10), go here:

This was the superhero movie i was least looking forward to seeing. This review still doesn't set my mind at ease in the least bit. I'm still going to take the wait and see approach but most likely won't even bother with it until it hits DVD/Bluray.

There are other movies this summer that have my attention.

It's not so much a review as an early roundup of reactions, which quite compellingly, were all euphoric. That bodes well for my own personal impression.

Let me be clear: this is not the film I'm most looking forward to seeing this summer. It is simply the superhero movie (counting Green Lantern, Captain America) I'm most excited for.

I want to see it but I'm not as excited about this one as I am about the other super hero movies this year. I know I will enjoy it but I can tell from the previews already that I will be making comparisons to the characters. I can't seem to get away from that...I don't know why.
